Next Xbox One Backwards-Compatible Game Arrives

Call of Duty 3 becomes the third Xbox 360 Call of Duty game playable on Xbox One.

The Xbox One backwards compatibility catalog expanded today with Call of Duty 3, Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb announced today on Twitter. Call of Duty 3 is not the first Call of Duty title in the backwards compatibility library, as it joins Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty 2.

Call of Duty games dominate the most-requested lineup for backwards compatibility titles the Xbox Feedback site. The top five most-requested titles are, in order, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

If you already own Call of Duty 3 on Xbox 360, it should show up automatically in your Xbox One library. If not, you can buy it now on your console or through Xbox.com for $20. The Treyarch-developed game launched in 2006.

Call of Duty 3 is the second new addition to the backwards compatibility catalog this week, following Tuesday's launch of Word Puzzle. Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased this week that there are some games coming to the library "soon" that he is "really looking forward to."

The Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature launched in November 2015 with the New Xbox One Experience update. Microsoft has added new titles on a regular basis since then--you can see all 250-plus games in the catalog here.

Since backwards compatibility launched, the response has been "overwhelming," Microsoft recently said. Users have collectively spent 145 million hours playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One.

In other news, Criterion Games has confirmed that it continues to work on backwards compatibility support for Burnout Paradise.

Literally just bought COD2 on PC yesterday to play through the campaign. Surprisingly, there are MP servers still up and running as well, but I'm far more interested in the campaign. I don't remember the Russian campaign being this boring, but I guess it has aged a bit. The US campaign is easily the best part though. Funny, because I remember playing these games as a kid and I remember them looking like real life. It's insane how differently I saw things back then. Regardless, Id love to also get back into CoD 3. Still one of the best first missions in any of the cod games and the campaign in general is pretty great.

Nice game to add. The old Call of Duty WW2 games were cool. They focused on theme and atmosphere a lot more back then. Now all I see is MLG meme montages

@wayneextremity: I got into COD with the original on PC. It's sad that people don't even know that exists and consider Modern Warfare as the "first COD". Not to mention, IMO the United Offensive expansion is probably my favorite COD still and no one remembers it.

I'd kill for this on PC, I absolutely loved CoD 3(The MP was quite interesting too, not like it is now). I'd almost get an Xbox One for this, I loved the CoD WW2 games.

Its very smart of ms to pick the world war 2 cod games knowing the future weapon games are super played out

@emptycow718: Or, they're just going in order and they will all be out eventually.

@gamer162594: Call of Duty Classic isn't available and Black Ops was the first to be backward compatible. So it's definitely not in order.

@emptycow718: Yea, that is what I loved about 3, the vehicle combat was friggin awesome. Me and my friend played Capture the Flag a lot and the Motorcycle was an absolute godsend, up until we encountered a tank.

Good times in that game.

When I first saw the screenshot I was thinking it was Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway... I'm disappointed lol. Dang it Gearbox, stop making games no one wants to play (or passing off the work to inferior studios), and make a new BIA game... or at least acknowledge the fact the series exists at all! It's one of only 2 original IP's your company has produced good games for... give it a little love for crying out loud.

@nl_skipper: Without even looking I'm gonna guess COD games get get way more votes than BIA games for BC....just a feeling

Avatar image for xspartanx3x

@nl_skipper: You should try it it's actually pretty good nothing like BIA but a solid game on it's own and kids of feels like a BIA game more than COD game.

@xspartanx3x: Oh I've got nothing against CoD, though I donno if I've ever played CoD 3... wasn't it console exclusive? I'm just really hurting for some BIA :(

Interesting timing before battlefield 1 perhaps?

@7tizz: Think he meant it's interesting that this (WW2) game has been bc'd shortly before the release of BF1. Which is true.

Avatar image for barcaazul

@mpl911:

Exactly, not modern day.

Avatar image for mpl911

@7tizz: To be honest, if WW1 hadn't happened and the Germans hadn't been so impoverished by the hand they were dealt by the allies afterwards (and rightly so, obv), there's little doubt that WW2 wouldn't have happened.

But back to the subject; you're right - they are 2 separate wars, but there haven't been any new games released about WW2 for some years...maybe Treyarch figure the best way to get a few more sales for their last-gen WW2 game is to make it BC just a few weeks before BF1 is released, with everyone now taking another look at the 19th century wars and weapons.

@fastharrydotcom: I'm surprised EA haven't given the nod for this to happen by now. There certainly wouldn't be any noticeable impact to sales of newer BF games as a result. That being said, we're all still waiting for them to give the OK for ME2 & 3 on X1 (or tell us when the re-release IS coming), so perhaps it's something they're choosing to just actively ignore until these games can be used to promote newer versions, or something else that can be sold to us.
