The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt won many awards last year, including GameSpot's own Game of the Year, but CD Projekt Red believes its upcoming expansion will be "better than the main game."

In an interview with Eurogamer Italy, senior writer Jakub Szamalek talked about the game's upcoming expansion Blood and Wine (via OnlySP). The expansion is set to conclude Geralt's story, as it will be his last adventure as the main character. Szamalek says that the experience and feedback received since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released last year has helped the team at CD Projekt Red achieve something even better than the main game.

Szamalek points out the Wild Hunt's lack of a charismatic enemy, saying they've made a unique and memorable opponent for Blood and Wine. He also mentions that they've created a complex story that they believe players will appreciate.

Once Blood and Wine is released, Szamalek says it'll be time for him to focus all of his energy on Cyberpunk 2077.

We've contacted CD Projekt Red for confirmation on this news and will update this story as more information is made available.

Blood and Wine's description on the game's Steam page is as follows:

"Blood and Wine, a 20-hour tale that will introduce the all-new in-game region of Toussaint, will take Geralt to a land untainted by war, where an atmosphere of carefree indulgence and knightly ritual masks an ancient, bloody secret."

The upcoming Witcher 3 expansion is set for a release in the first half of 2016. The first expansion, Hearts of Stone, released last year and received a score of 9 in GameSpot's review.

It was recently announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is nominated for eight D.I.C.E. awards. The open-world RPG is also up for a Writers Guild of America award.

The latest major update for The Witcher 3 was released this past week, fixing a number of bugs and improving the "general game performance."

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Honestly I don't think they needed a 'charismatic enemy' for the game, the Wild Hunt themselves were more in line with the Nazgul of LotR which made them way more menacing. Plus Darth Vader was an awesome villain but you wouldn't call him charismatic at all.

It's interesting to see a developer claim a dlc/expansion to be better than the main game.

I respect that kind of honesty.

@omotih: Yea, it's only the best game to come out in the last 10 years. NBD or anything. Enjoy being the one clown thinking that it's a bad game. Mad nerd hipster.

Why didn't they make a sequel then? There's diminishing returns on making dlc, the longer you do it the less and less people are still with the game or can even access the DLC, a lot of people walked away from Witcher 3.

Before adding dlc maybe they need to fix some shit like inventory management, and contextual actions. IMHO that you can't use certain commands in battle is crappy, sometimes you don't even know you're close to an enemy but find yourself engaged and unable to perform certain actions. Very frustrating, especially when you're trying to prepare for that very battle.

I'm going to wait until a more accessible version of this game. As is, it's a little too cumbersome for me.

It's a good game that could be even better, or at least reach a wider audience. I wanted to enjoy this game but found it frustrating. Needs to be more intuitive/streamlined.

I get it, it used to be a PC game so it targeted hard core WRPG players and a mouse interface but on console not everyone's familiar with all the nuances and people don't have the background to provide context for all the design decisions. It feels obtuse to me, a console gamer who wasn't exposed to nearly as many of these conventions. It's like when they bring a console ass console game to PC and PC gamers find the interface shit and don't understand why you can't just save everywhere or whatever. You gotta tweak the game for the platform.

@girlusocrazy: CDPR does not need to make another Witcher game, the graphic is already topnotch and the main story has ended pretty well in my opinion. Now what we need are more side quests, contracts and new maps to explore (Dat giant MAP!!!!). If you've played through the whole game, you would probably sense that a lot of side quest stories are cut short. For example, in Novigrad, the king of beggar explained his grand plan to take over the city from the temple and made it sounds like a biggg deal, but after that, almost zero interactions with him. The other example is scoia'tael. There is only one mission is actually related to scoia'tael which is unacceptable to me. I mean seriously, I want to know where the hell is Iorveth and Saskia? Also, scoia'tael is basically funded by Nilfgaard, so they are supposed to play a very important role in the entire war and I did not see that in the game.

@ojjlino: Business wise it would be stupid not to capitalize on the newfound popularity of the series by making new entries. Witcher 3 has broken a sales threshold for CDPR and Witcher 3 is for a lot of people the first time they tried a game in the series. To stop here may be a bad move if they want to continue their success.

Anyway they can do whatever they want, but to act on idealistic reasons as you suggest may limit further success.

@girlusocrazy: I think you'll be waiting a long time for a sequel, and I also think it's a near perfect game, I'm on ps4, the fightings not quite a perfect as bloodborne but the story size and all round greatness couldn't get much better

@rodoxthedar@girlusocrazy There isn't going to be a sequel to this at all. They've said many times this will be the last Witcher game. Maybe stop nitpicking on tiny flaws in an almost perfect game. This generation is spoiled as hell. How much more streamlined do you need? Do you want it to hold your hand through a 3 hour tutorial? Gotta have some situational awareness my man and save... like a lot. =D good luck!

@fxzero: When I've got tons of games to play on my backlog, and I've given a game a good 10+ hours and just don't find the fun, it's time to move on.

Almost perfect is a matter of opinion. Maybe I'll come back to it some time but probably not, especially if a new offline Elder Scrolls comes out.

Anyway they said no sequel? Doesn't leave out a prequel... Witcher games start after the books end.

@fxzero: I think there's a great opportunity for Ciri to have her game, too. With her being Elder blood and (depending on choices in original game) a new Empress, her story can be fleshed out - a lot. And Geralt can be new Vesemir. Unless they kill him in B&W.

@fxzero: "as it will be his last adventure as the main character." That's not saying there won't be any further Witcher titles, just it's the last Geralt as the main character. His story is ending, not necessarily the world of the Witcher.

@archav3n: Which is fine, and I'm not bashing your opinion - as it is just that, your opinion - but this game blew the minds of a great deal of people and really set the bar for RPGs. So thats why it will be great.

@Cassius103:

The stories of both expansions are standalone (think of them as of huge side-quests). You can safely get Hearts of Stone now (it's very good), and Blood and WIne when it gets released.

@Triton: Definately do so!

It doesn't really matter if you have played the previous games.

The only major things it would help you with would be understanding the world and characters and understanding occasional references to past games.

Many actually say that this is the best place for new players to get into the series because of how well it introduces the characters for newcomers!!!!!!

@Triton: definitely worth it. the first 16 "DLC" pieces have been free and Hearts of Stone was only $9.99 at release. i've seen main game + Hearts of Stone on sale for $29.99 already.

so all you'd be lacking right now is the Expansion that is on the way. even another $9.99 for that would still be ~$40 for a huge awesome game.

@Triton: it may help with understanding some of the other characters backgrounds but they have pretty well kept them as separate experiences.

Witcher 1 definitely shows it's age if you play it now, was a huge deal at release though, but 2 is still an amazing looking and fun game.

Hearts of Stone was better than the main game story-wise, so this doesn't come as a surprise.

There was a great scene in the last novel - Anna Henrietta (Duchess of Toussaint) and Fringilla Vigo - dressed in sexy lingerie - were stomping on grapes during Feast of Tub. I hope there will be some hot action between Geralt and Fringilla, like in the books. ;)
