Next Star Wars Movie Has A Director, Announcement In January--Report

Who's making the next Star Wars movie?

There has been considerable uncertainty in the past few weeks about the future of the Star Wars series on the big screen. No new movie beyond next month's The Rise of Skywalker has been announced, and the recent departure of David Benioff and DB Weiss from the trilogy they were working on was followed by Disney boss Bob Iger stating that the series would soon go "on hiatus." However, it has now been reported that a director has been lined up for the next film.

According the The Hollywood Reporter, producer Kathleen Kennedy has chosen a director to helm the Star Wars movie that currently has a December 2022 release date. This date was initially assigned to Benioff and Weiss's first movie, and despite their exit, it has remained on Disney's schedule. However, THR also states that this won't be the Star Wars movie that Rian Johnson is working on either, so it's currently unknown what it will be.

It has also been reported that "no announcement is being planned until January." This makes sense as Lucasfilm's current focus is promoting The Rise of Skywalker, which hits theaters on December 20. However, it's exciting to think we might have some positive news about the theatrical future of the Star Wars series in the New Year.

As for The Rise of Skywalker, a bunch of new character posters were released this week. You can check them out here, together with these new images from the movie. We've also published our The Rise of Skywalker review.

In related news, the first live-action Star Wars show, The Mandalorian, hit Disney+ last week. The first two episodes are available--check out GameSpot's reviews of Episode 1 and Episode 2. For more, read GameSpot's guide to every Star Wars show and movie that's been announced so far.

I hope they go with a standalone film in this announcement and not another trilogy. Save that for later... Just use a single film to try and get back on track.

I don't understand why Disney even keeps Kathleen Kennedy. She is just ruining Star Wars, she doesn't understand what fans want, with her whole the force is female Mary Sue crap.

@alex33x: I don't necessarily blame her. I'm not sure who has the actual control when the movies are being made. Is i the director picking the whole story and then the designs? If so they wrecked the Sequels because apart from the story, the ship/vehicle designs, other than the recycled McQuarrie designs (and FO Star Destroyer) are trash compared to the OT and Sequels. Heck even the old Expanded Universe has better ship designs!

She's made them over 4 billion dollars so far with all her star wars movies.

But sure yeah, why keep one of the most successful producers in Hollywood who has worked with legendary directors on some of the greatest films of all time.

I know TLJ has y'all feeling negative, but I liked Rogue One, and I'd be interested in anything taking place in the "original 6 movie saga" timeframe. I'd be even more interested in some Old Republic stuff. I would LOVE that, as long as it's good. However, they have indeed screwed the pooch on the post-ROTJ timeline.

I'm not even a little excited for the possibility. Like, they would have to get a director that I respect quite a bit to even have me interested.

That said, if they announced another decent Star Wars game (like Jedi Fallen Order), I'd certainly be more excited lol

Announcing other trilogies mid-trilogy is the stupidest thing I've ever witnessed.

There was a time I would care about this, but it means nothing now. There's also an 80% chance that whoever is chosen will be dropped by Kathleen Kennedy at some point anyway.
