[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Warner Bros. announced more details about Mortal Kombat X. The game is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. It will be on display next week at E3 2014. Warner Bros. says Mortal Kombat X will deliver a "cinematic" presentation combined with "all-new gameplay" to offer up the "most brutal Kombat experience ever." It's also going to have a significant online component. Warner Bros. says it will deliver a "fully connected experience" where players are launched into a "persistent online contest where every fighter matters in a global battle for supremacy."
For the first time in Mortal Kombat history, you'll be able to choose from multiple character variations, Warner Bros. says. This can impact your characters' strategy and fighting style, the studio says. There's also an "original story" included that will showcase characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while also introducing new challengers that "represent the forces of good and evil."
The original story is below.
The wait is over. After various leaks and teases, Mortal Kombat series creator Ed Boon officially announced the next entry in the longrunning fighting franchise today. It's called Mortal Kombat X, and it marks the tenth installment in the core series, following 2011's Mortal Kombat. The game launches in 2015 for unspecified platforms and you can watch a trailer now.
"Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience," reads the game's description on YouTube. Leaked Amazon product pages for Mortal Kombat X suggest the game is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, but there's no mention of platforms whatsoever in today's announcement.
Mortal Kombat will feature an original track called "Can't Be Stopped" written rapper Wiz Khalifa. You can hear the track in the video above.
