Now Playing: God Of War - PGW 2017 Trailer

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Sony's new God of War for PS4 brings the franchise to the world of Norse mythology, moving on from the Greek era of previous instalments in the series. The next games in the series could take place in the Egyptian and Mayan eras, and others, director Cory Barlog says.

"The Greek games were the Greek era of God of War," Barlog said in the latest issue of Game Informer. "Moving on, the next mythological belief system he interacts with became the Norse era of God of War. But we may end up going on to the Egyptian era and the Mayan era and so on and so forth."

Given that 2018's God of War isn't out yet, you should not expect to hear any official details on the next game--if there is one--for some time. Sony Santa Monica boss Shannon Studstill added that there was much discussion internally at Sony about if the God of War series needed more time to rest following the underwhelming God of War: Ascension.

"A lot of people throughout the organization wanted [God of War] to sleep and rest," Studstill said. Barlog said it was an uphill battle to make a new God of War. "Even the first pitches I gave, there was that, 'You've really got to convince me that we should do another one,'" he said.

Barlog went on to say that God of War as a franchise needs to be bigger than it currently is, rising to the level of Uncharted or Assassin's Creed when it comes to popularity. "To me, that was important, because I really think we needed to have a much bigger audience,” Barlog says. "I want this to reach a lot of people; I want this to be on the level of the Uncharteds and the Assassin's Creeds. We want to grow this franchise big time."

Also in the interview, Studstill talked about how the God of War series started to fall off the map, so the team looked at a new game as a way to reinvigorate the franchise.

"What became apparent to me was that we were watching this franchise wane a bit," Studstill said. "It was getting old. The storyline with Kratos being the hardcore badass--I think people were starting to say, 'What's next?’ I felt like, in order to reinvent, we really needed to turn a lot of things around."

Game Informer's full story is incredibly in-depth and detailed, covering numerous other aspects of the game including its story and new weapons. You can find out how to purchase the issue here. In other news, we recently learned that the campaign will take you as long as 35 hours to complete.

God of War is currently scheduled for release sometime in 2018. The game's latest trailer was released during Paris Games Week, and it shows off some father-son combat; you can watch it in the embed above.

>game

Movie. An overly long, glorified case at that. Sony seems to find it amusing to turn exclusives into shitty TLoU clones (walking simulators with undesirable AI partners *annoying children no less*). Makes one wish failure upon them as a whole for their stupidity.

>turned away from 'obscure Greek' for 'various' more obscure things

Mayan? Really? Even Babylonian is better known. It would be one thing to ignore sense for the change in venue and pantheon while retaining GoW's formula of HnS, but to abandon not only HnS, but proper gameplay in favor of what is sure to be a very meh story? What a grand fall from grace (and waste of an IP *further sullied*).

>needed to be bigger

It was the biggest of its kind. Now it is no longer itself. The only issue it had was the same one that killed DMC (betraying its fans). This just completed that betrayal. No more, no less. Seems even Bayonetta won't escape this fate with the talk I've heard regarding Kamiya (like so many others, simply aging out of being fit for the lead in this franchise ill-suited to 'step-dad simulation').

>how it fell off the map

It wasn't about story. It was gameplay. Executive mandates pushed for PvP that was never going to work (not only taking resources from the PvE, but bastardizing even it). Making it the true focus (borrowing the franchise name merely for false legitimacy). GoW:A failure was grand enough to truly cause a "wane" in the community (making even vets lose much of their will to continue playing), but this? This nu-GoW business is just assaulting a man in a coma. While not dead, the fanbase is in a sorry state, to be sure (I'm left with basically just Latin America for new students to teach how to get good).

It seem good to me . Graphic look great . They take the game to the open world and it feel almost like skyrim. With no extra skills from beginning which is great. You have to work to get bettter and i like the idea but not Kratos. I hope the game not too short and i hope Kratos die and we begin with the kid and start something new instead that would be something.

Game sucks eh? So you played it then? No, then how do you know it sucks?

Condemning something you have never even got to try is a bit ridiculous but people are funny like that. Yeah it's not the same GOW from back in the day but change can be good, or not so much but it's not even out yet so we don't know yet.

I'm not saying go out and buy it day 1 but at least wait for it to be out to get a clear view on it before putting Kratos down for good.

What a clown. I guess he didn't hear that one of the other franchises he compared theirs to, Uncharted, is over now after only 4 games, plus 1 for PS Vita I think. These guys seem to have really no ideas for new games at all, which is pretty sad. And it makes it seem that the only reason Sony keeps them around is so they can keep milking the GOW franchise a bit longer.

I wonder why they're so afraid of making a new game, like the one they're working on now, without having to reuse that name and its main character? The Killzone devs have finally moved away from those games as well and Horizon has done pretty well. Completely without any references to the Killzone games.

This franchise is going worse every time.

It was already confirmed: No middle-range main weapon, no different skills and special melee attacks... no jump, no swimming,

Bad camera angle unsuitable for this kind of game, bad gameplay progression...

Is useless if they find new mythologies to prolong the life of this series, when they are ruining the gameplay.

It's just not the great GOW it was on PS2 anymore.

Uncharted yes, Assassin's Creed no..we want good quality games that isn't chugged out every year. On another note, it would be cool for Kratos to take on his counterparts like Egyptian Montu and Mayan Tohil.

Just don't add side-quests.

GoW doesn't need to be open world. It's a hack and slash with epic monsters and puzzles.

I figured this would be the only way they'd continue the series. We've already seen Kratos maliciously slaughter the entire Greek pantheon. The only way I thought they could continue the series is by moving to other mythologies.

Personally, I'd love to see an Egyptian style God of War.

@chiefwiggum16: I respect your opinion. However, change is good from time to time. It's a good direction they took to change the GOW formula. Old school GOW just wouldn't work in the day and age.

I like change and I believe more people should welcome it with open hands

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@chiefwiggum16: You're just reluctant to change, like people usually are. It was about time they changed the locked camera and the basic hack and slash mechanics, it was getting outdated and redundant.

@livedreamplay: its that kid that i dont like everything else looks epic . with the kid just reminds me of last of us

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@spectrexr1: First of all, why is it bad that it reminds you of the last of us? The kid from the last of us, ellie, is one of the best characters created in recent gaming. Second of all, the kid is probably just used to underline Kratos' character arc. Third of all, him being annoying is normal, kids are usually annoying.

Just have patience and let's see what happens....

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@billy90rickey: He's most likely not useless, he will probably add to Kratos' character arc.

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: its bad because a lot of Sony games already look and play the same 3rd person action games...and to have another game added to that is getting redundant . last of us uncharted says gone and now god of war. Would be like of Xbox kept making halo like shooters .

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@spectrexr1: All the ones you mentioned are vastly different though. Are they all from the same camera angle? They are. The rest is not the same. Uncharted has completely different mechanics than The Last of Us, or God of War, or Days Gone. In order to align my view to your Xbox metaphor, it would be like Xbox kept making games from the same camera angle. And most of them are in 3rd person for them too by the way.

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: your right they have diff game mechanics . but they are the same style of game with the same look. And that's what is getting boring to me....its like if Microsoft had halo. .titanfall and let's say destiny ...all those games have diff mechanics and play diff. And all are good games. But they all 1st person shooters. And I don't want a bunch of the same type of game from 1st party .everyone says Sony has such variety ...they really don't Xbox has more variety . Sony has 3rd person action games and Japanese games ...lol that's it. Xbox has 1st person and 3rd person shooter. ...racer sim and arcade.....rts. ..open world mmo type game...zombie survival...2d fighter. ..that is variary. And id like Sony to do they same .that's all

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@spectrexr1: What are you talking about? Uncharted looks vastly different than The Last of Us in all areas. Style, design, artwork everything. God of War too. The only resemblance out of the ones mentioned by you are The Last of Us and Days Gone, even though Days Gone has different mechanics and is open world, it's still a zombie game and has that post apocalyptic feel. That's about it in terms of resemblance. The camera angle alone is not enough to say it's the same feel. Does Ryse Son of Rome have the same feel as Dead Rising? No...

Besides that, people are saying PS has more variety of games for a good reason. Those mentioned by us are the most popular indeed, but they're not the only ones. You have racing games, platformers, adventure games, horror games, old school action games, hack and slash, and so on...

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: you joking right. U do know last of us and uncharted use the same game engine lol ..and I'm guessing that same engine is used in days gone. We got to be real here. All Sony first party games look the same and are the same style 3rd person over the shoulder story games. Horizon doesn't look like uncharted ...diff style ... And when it comes to Sony games ..not multiplats ...there isn't much quality variaty . Sony has no good 1st person shooter. Fighter racer. Rts anything ...all Sony games 1st party are basically the same..and I want Sony to try something diff . maybe the sucker punch game will be something diff. But something tells me that's gonna be a 3rd person action game too. Just want a game from Sony I can play for more than 8 hours abd me and my friends can play together ..like halo or forza ...hell even my friends still go into the collissum in ryse. Lol. I'm just saying. And if u no nothing about games and look at ryse gameplay and dead rising u not going to think one is the other. But u look at days gone or last of us or God of war. U will lol and that's boring. Not saying they not gonna be great games. Just want something diff.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@spectrexr1: "all Sony games 1st party are basically the same." Lmao you just lost all your credibility and made yourself look like a huge xbox fanboy... Thought I was talking to a regular person analyzing games, not an xbox fanboy. My bad.

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: lol u funny . so you trying to tell me that you don't think last of us ..uncharted ..days gone and god of war all look the same. And they are all the same type of game. That's like saying halo and destiny don't look alike. Lol. And I am a Xbox fanboy haha but I'm a rational fanboy. And I think if you can't admit most let me for rent myself not all Sony first party games look the same and are the same type of game. U might be a ps4 fanboy lol.

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@spectrexr1: So Halo and Destiny are both space shooters, with the same gameplay, and identical controls, they are even made by the same company. Uncharted and God of War for example,

If we take Uncharted and God of War, Uncharted is a shooter, God of war is not, Uncharted is set in the jungles of modern day, God of War is set is the greek mythology, in uncharted you try to find treasure, in god of war you kill gods, not made by the same companies, incredibly different mechanics.

Now you're telling me that those two are the same as the first two lmao. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be the first time an xbox fanboy would call me a ps4 fanboy, that;s the first thing they do, however it is the first time it would be on such a ridiculous basis.

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: and we all fanboys to a certain extent lol and that's cool long as it doesnt get too crazy

Avatar image for spectrexr1
spectreXr1

@livedreamplay: on not talking about the gameplay of the games obviously they set in two diff time periods. I mean the look the art style the genre. Cinematic over the shoulder action adventure game . lol and that's a fact

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@spectrexr1: Art styles and genres completeley different too. So yeah, we're back to camera angle being the only similarity, like I said in the first comments of our discussion. And by that logic, probably more than half of the current games are 'basically the same', since now even first person shooters let you switch to over the shoulder.

I'm still not sure about the direction they are going with these games. It seems bad, for a God of War game. Almost like theyre just taking the name and characters but not making God of War. It's super lame.

it's hard to understand why the developers added that kid.

He is really annoying and doesn't fit the game at all.

Let's hope the next game will be only Kratos without that kid.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@snk0610: Kids are usually annoying, it would've been weird if the kid was wise and understanding. Also, he's probably there in order to underline Kratos' character arc.

@billy90rickey: Women and children first, but not in video games.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@billy90rickey: Since when do people on the internet decide the characters in the game? Isn't that the job of the writer?

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@billy90rickey: You're not buying the game, but someone who wants to see what the story is about and is interested in how Kratos' character changes with a kid alongside him, will buy the game instantly. Me included. And we've seen before with The Last of Us that most people don't mind at all having a kid character in the story.

But this is talk is nonsense anyway, creators should do what they think is best for the game, not what sells best. Otherwise we'll all be having only call of duty-like games.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@billy90rickey: Your reaction is normal, to an extent. People are always reluctant to change. However, I doubt that it will tank if the writing is good, regardless of how many characters are added/taken away. Some will like the change, others won't. It's all good in the end.
