TDK Mediactive has signed a five-year licensing agreement with DreamWorks Interactive to develop games based on DreamWorks' upcoming computer generated feature film, Shrek. Under the terms of the agreement, TDK Mediactive has the rights to develop and publish games for next-generation platforms including the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, the GameCube, and the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color handhelds. In fact, the company plans to release the first title for the Game Boy Color in May 2001 to coincide with the film's theatrical release. It is also developing a Shrek game for an unnamed next-generation console platform to be released in the fourth quarter of 2001 to coincide with Shrek's planned video release.

"This agreement with DreamWorks provides us with a very strong character base from which to develop a long-term video game franchise," said Vincent Bitetti, CEO of TDK Mediactive. "We are excited to be part of the DreamWorks family of licensees and the Shrek team."

According to a representative at TDK Mediactive, the games will include new quests and plotlines while staying true to the film's main characters and overall presentation. The film follows the exploits of an ornery Ogre named Shrek whose land is overrun by familiar fairy-tale characters such as the three little mice, the seven dwarves, and the big bad wolf. They were all banished from fairy-tale land by the evil Prince Farquaad, and Shrek and his wisecracking donkey must save Princess Fiona and restore the fairy-tale characters to their homes. The film uses voice work from Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy, among others.

GameSpot will have further details on the Shrek video games as they become available. In the meantime, watch the movie trailer by clicking on the media link below.
