Next Assassin's Creed Game Visits Feudal Japan...But It's a Free Card Game On iOS

Assassin's Creed Memories is a card battling RPG that explores new areas the console and PC games have yet to feature.

No Caption Provided

When fans requested that the next Assassin's Creed game be set in Feudal Japan, this probably isn't what they meant. Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed Memories is available for free starting today on the iOS app store (no word on Android). According to the game's listing, it combines "card battle, RPG, and strategy gameplay" as well as "20 vs. 20 Guild vs. Guild combat."

But the most interesting inclusion in this new title are the new locations. In card-battling form, you'll be able to visit two locations that haven't come to the main series yet: Feudal Japan and Imperial Mongolia.

Is Ubisoft setting players up for further console adventures in these locations? Only time will tell. But there's no indication that the games are tied to any upcoming titles. This isn't the first mobile game to carry the Assassin's Creed moniker, however. Assassin's Creed Pirates came out for both iOS and Android last year. And this fall, the Assassin's Creed story is splitting in two directions with Assassin's Creed: Rogue for 360/PS3 and Assassin's Creed: Unity for Xbox One/PS4/PC.

But what do you think about this lastest addition to the Assassin's Creed family? Even if you're not sold on card games, at the very least it's free, but do you want to see Ubisoft continue to experiment with bringing the franchise to these new genres? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Assassin's Creed is starting to run its course and Ubisoft knows it. The games are fun, but it is very quickly turning into a 'been there, done that' kind of feeling. So they're pushing out as many spin-offs as they can so as to continue the 'microtransaction' trend, and they're even starting to push out more than one main, annual release in the series with this years 'Rogue' and 'Unity' (SNOOOOORE.)

AC was easily one of my favorite series at the start of the last generation, but now it's just another Call of Duty.

Not really. The games have morphed drastically to employ vastly different tech over the years and will continue to do so in future. When playing the first game, who would have thought we would have been sailing galleons on the high seas in AC4 on PS4. No other series has had such variety and done it with a high level of polish.

You've been playing too much COD because that has gone stale and worse still we now have Destiny which is basically COD in nano suites. This whole repetitive respawning FPS pvp Destiny-COD-Crysis-Halo thing is the real dinosaur with players dancing around objects while trying to kill each other in enclosed map areas. Open worlds are the future of gaming and Ubisoft is right on the cutting edge with Rockstar. The PS4 hardware is perfectly suited to open worlds due to the fast GDDR5 RAM.

I would feel better if they didn't make an AC game set in feudal Japan at all instead of wasting the setting on this... If they made an legit AC title in FJ I'm fairly certain it would do amazing numbers. Troll well played Ubisoft...

Loved AC 1-2, AC3 was good but too much laborious dialogue, AC4 was the best game so far because it took the best from all previous games and multiplied them to perfection. Unity tries some new things and looks great, but I cannot comment until I play it.

Ubi are not stupid. They know the series has longevity so they will end up doing them all eventually. Feudal Japan would be really nice but I'm hoping for ancient Egypt, ancient China, the Inca's, the Aztecs, or the Vikings. They are making one a year now so they will come thick and fast.

They haven't gone very far back in time yet, but there is a gold mine of stuff back there if they adapt the story to allow ancient civilisations. They can do whatever they like with the story. It's not as if they are faithfully following history and telling true stories. The story can go wherever they want by allowing a current game to find evidence of earlier version of the organisation going back into ancient times. They could even go into fantasy with the lost city of Atlantis.

Ubisoft: So people were asking about an AC taking place in feudal Japan?
Devs: Yeah! It seems like a good twist to the series!
Ubisoft: You know what, card games are in right now, let's make a card game!
Devs: But..
Ubisoft: Card Game

Devs: But boss..
Ubisoft: Card
Ubisoft: Game

I can see Samurai champloo following in my mind now

an open world game in old japan, where you can be an honorable samurai or a filthy ninja or just a ronin ....

Uhm, no, that would be a completely different game not set in the Assassin's Creed univers. You'd pretty much play as an assassin. Don't get me wrong, your idea for a game like that is good.

Man, you had me with Feudal Japan... but you lost me with free card game.

That's what I always wanted, a real Assassin's Creed game set in old Japan (it's perfect for AC)... but I'm not going to bother with this, not even for free.

Unity looks like it could be a great AC game, it looks impressive, but the whole Paris setting doesn't really interest me. I probably won't buy it.

If a future core AC game doesn't go to feudal Japan, I'll be a seriously sad panda. The setting, the time period and the weaponry/style fit the game perfectly. I'd have chosen Japan over France any day. I have a serious feeling that Unity will feel very, very similar to AC2 and Brotherhood. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as both those games were phenomenal, but a more drastic setting change would have been more enjoyable. The past three core games, plus all their bonus content and expansions, have all taken place within Euro-centric locales (excluding Revelations). I dunno, I guess I just really want to change it up.

While I agree with what you're saying, I must disagree with the statement "the past three core games." There were actually 6 main games before Unity and Rogue. The first Assassin's Creed was set in three cities all in Asia, AC 2 was set in Venice, Florence and some other Italian cities, AC Brotherhood was set in Rome, AC Revelations was set in Constantinople (which is Istanbul today), AC 3 was set in Boston and New York, and AC 4 was set in the Caribbean islands. So it's true that only Ezio's trillogy is set in across Europe, but the series so far has been very diverse with its settings.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well, when I say "core games" I mean AC two, three and four. And while only AC2 is actually set in Europe, they're all based on European cultures. I.e., AC2 based in Italy, AC3 based in the English colonies in America. and AC4 set in the Spanish colonies of the Caribbean. They've been diverse settings, yes, but still with a very European bent. Now with Unity being set in France, I just feel kinda...burned out, ya know? Japan would be such a dramatic departure from the previous games, if only for a main character that isn't European (I know, Connor is Native American, but his father Haytham was still a white Englishman) and a city setting that isn't all tiled/shingled roofs and clapboard siding, or just plain shacks. Do you see kinda what I mean?

I'm just bitter, I love the Edo period in Japan. I just finished a play through of Shogun 2, lol. My only hope/guess is that maybe, just maybe, this card game is some sort of prologue to a future game in Japan. At least, I hope.

Well, dude, you're saying it like Europe is such a small and limited culture. If anything, past and future AC games prove that Europe has many rich and diverse cultures, it's a reason why it's called the Old Continent. The british, french, spanish carried those cultures wherever they went, but their history is much richer than that, and why shouldn't it be explored? That doesn't mean I don't agree with you. I'm asking for a feudal Japan setting ever since AC2.

Every AC fan has been asking for an AC game set in Japan for years.......just not a BS mobile card game. I was really hoping on seeing an AC game that takes place around the time of The Last Samurai, when there are still ninjas and samurai, but the US has come to open the ports and modernize Japan. It just fits within the AC universe, Ubisoft could even make one of Conor's relatives (like a grandson or great grandson) a member of the US army who has a secret agenda in Japan, so he's like a double agent (half US army/ half working for Japanese Assassin order)

Honestly, I would have thought an assassin from Japan would have been made a ninja, not a samurai. Samurai were more about the honor of fair and direct combat IIRC. Ninjas were more about attacking the enemy unexpectedly and leaving before they know what hit 'em.

A next-gen AC set in Feudal Japan or Ancient China can truly revive this franchise and more importantly for Ubi, it can produce boat-loads of money! And that's why we got this iOS Card game....
