Next Assassin's Creed game will be "much more" next-gen

Ubisoft lead designer says "the next games are going to be much more on the next-gen side."

The follow-up to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag--the first entry in the series for next-generation consoles--will be "much more next-gen," according to Ubisoft.

"I think 'next' next-gen is going to be for the next games," Black Flag lead designer Jean-Sebastien Decant told GameReactor. "The next games are going to be much more on the next-gen side. This one is really on the edge."

Decant explained that when Ubisoft began development on Black Flag, also released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the studio had no idea what the system specifications for the Xbox One or PS4 were going to be.

"When you start and you don't even know the specs or what they are going to do you don't think about that [next-gen consoles] or you're going to be sick," he said.

Beyond improvements to combat, stealth, and parkour, Decant suggested that new games in the Assassin's Creed series may introduce the next evolution of social features.

"I think we're going toward a gaming place where the open world will be shared with other players," he said. "More and more. Socially speaking, but also maybe multiplayer stuff. And we will have to consider the open-world much more like a platform that we could sustain for years."

A new Assassin's Creed game for 2014 has not yet been confirmed, though a core entry in the series has been released every year since 2009.

Really Disappointed by the fact that ubisoft is biasing the future of AC series more towards multiplayer and less to that of single player, hell, i want sandbox all for myself, something all for myself to do whatever the shit i want to..

second thing, i'm from India, and the internet here is a born twin to the slowest snail ever to take birth on earth, we get like 60kbps at an avg. and as far as i know a MMO game needs at least of 6 mbps to run shit up fine and smooth!!.....
well for the indian gaming base, this is such disappointment for AC series, neverthless i'm thrilled for you guys for MMO at your finger tips, know "SHIT GETTING REAL"........but hard luck for the indian fan base of AC series..!

"a platform that we could sustain for years.".. AC has had a good run, but run its course. Black Flag should be a respectable send off to end the series, not a vision for re-skinning the tired concept across various eras for years to come. That's not exciting to think about no matter how many candy sprinkles you drop on it, come up with a new franchise.

I really wish software companies would focus more on the games themselves and less on multi-player and "social features". If I wanted more social features I would play on facebook and twitter 24/7. Are the software companies really that clueless? Gamers want better games! We don't care about having more multi-player options.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Could not agree more. When gaming companies start abandoning the single-player experience, or not giving it as much attention as their multiplayer, that's when I start abandoning their games.

Two things: First, nothing like apologizing for your current product when the next one is not available. Next, if "next gen" means more multiplayer and social integration, I'm fine with current gen.

As an aside, I would have thought the low count playing multiplayer on their servers would have taught them most of us are not interested in AC multi.

I hope they tread very lightly with the online stuff. You have a good thing going with Black Flag (Which I think feels pretty next gen as it is, with the seamless integration of ship and land based gameplay) please don't ruin it. And whatever you do, please tell me you fired the guys who designed the missions in AC3.

It will be AC 3150... all futuristic. There will be swords, that shoot.... more swords??? And you will float everywhere instead of run.

Idk. Just guessing. I honeslty wasnt a huge fan of AC games... i have the new Black Flag on PS4. It looks great... but its boring to me... GTAV takes the cake for me. As far as open world

Part of me thought fatigue on this series had set in after the missed opportunity that was AC3 (not a terrible game, but not the massive leap above Revelations that AC2 was over AC1), but Black Flag is amazing; by taking a lot of the best aspects of Far Cry 3 and transposing it to the pirate setting, things have gotten significantly more fun. The Naval Bases are like the Outposts and the hunting/crafting systems have tangible consequences on your ability to succeed in combat- particularly at sea. Here's hoping that the next AC game continues on this upswing.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Meh, you can have it all if devs would just manage their efforts correctly and their handlers would stop hitting them with unrealistic deadlines.

I knew there was going to be another Assassin's Creed game before Black Flag was released, my guess the next one will be set either World War I or II

@benleslie5 they might as well stop releasing on PC, its obvious theyre still butthurt from that drm incident

"It's always a question of compromise about the effect, how it looks, and the performance it takes from the system. On PC, usually you don't really care about the performance, because the idea is that if it's not [running] fast enough, you buy a bigger GPU. Once you get on console, you can't have this approach." ~Sylvain Trottier

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's a balls approach to PC development. For EVERY platform you want to optimize it as much as possible. It allows you to do more as a dev and for PC, it allows more people to run the game.

I don't give a fuc really about multiplayer or social features. just keep making the single player games bigger and better.

UbiSoft, it has been said before, it will be said again - Develop for the strongest, most capable platform (PC) first and then port it down to whatever console hardware at that time can handle - Your problem has been solved, you can thank me later.

Then again, given the recent (non existent) Assassins Creed 4 PC optimization ****-ups and UbiSoft's stand about it going just "we don't optimize for PC, if it lags buy better hardware" stand (even on top hardware), this company is beyond my shitlist already. (not to mention the disfunctional and worthless uPlay requirement)

If they want my money again, then they should develop primarily for PC and skip all that extra launcher, DRM and online requirement crap and release good games with replay value and mod support instead.

Assassins Creed has potential, but even the extremely boring and super easy / "casual" combat system that hasn't been improved since the very first Assassins Creed is not worth my time (enemies waiting patiently in line, waiting to get killed, holding block being the ultimate defense, etc.), there is nothing player skill based involved.
I'll rather play Overgrowth instead which, even this early in development, is already vastly more enjoyable and requires actual player skill to defeat the enemies in combat. (and it doesn't annoy me with DRM or disfunctional online "services")

It's the same with every hardware launch. The games are only slightly better graphically than the previous gen. I just hope that the developers really take advantage of what these next gen machines will be capable of. Sure, better graphics will be nice, but better use of cloud features, interfaces, etc would be great.

Don't much care for the multiplayer aspect or idea, I mean, it could be neat, but still, when they say it'll be much more next-gen, as shallow as it may seem, I'm simply thinking "Alright, great, even better visuals!"

It'd be cool to see one that has espionage etc, like a Cold War type atmosphere... Maybe it wouldn't have to be AC, but a game like that could be good

what about an ac game at the beginning of time

where the assassins are the blue paramecium and the templars are the red paramecium

u synchronize by touching other shit, to win the game u evolve into a fucking fish

My biggest problem with AC IV is that you can no longer kill civilians like previous installments in the series, the only way you can kill people is with the gun and/or shooting explosives. And as much as I love naval warfare it becomes quite tedious after doing the same things over and over again, but I love AC IV - the second best AC in my opinion, bested by AC II, which is the ezio costume they shouldve used, not the crappy brotherhood costume

Watch Dogs IS NOT THE SAME as AC .

What I mean is what to see how can you as the assassin's/Templar maybe (the player) deal with the environment that is not the same as previous games and that you require new tactics and way to move around and act accordingly to the environment.

That is what I meant by an AC set in the 21th century
