New Xbox One Update Will Make Some Functionality 50 Percent Faster

Players can expect a "new level of speed and responsiveness," according to Microsoft's Mike Ybarra.

Comments

The upcoming New Xbox One Experience update landing in November will make some system functionality up to 50 percent faster. That's according to Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra, who talked more about the upcoming update during an appearance on the latest episode of "Major Nelson Radio."

Ybarra said Microsoft tracks load time data for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the New Xbox One Experience (available now to some testers), and in some cases, executing tasks is quite a bit faster. "Popular gaming features" will load up to 50 percent faster, but he didn't say which exactly these will be. But overall, Ybarra said fans can look forward to a "new level of speed and responsiveness."

The New Xbox One Experience will be available to everyone in November. Also included with the update is backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles, a new Guide, a redesigned Home, and a new Community section. Ybarra also teased that the update will introduce new "accessibility" features to ensure that the Xbox One can appeal to the widest possible market. These features will be announced later.

For everything we know about the New Xbox One Experience so far, check out this post.

Also during the podcast, Ybarra talked about Windows 10's forthcoming integration with Xbox One. Bringing the OS to Xbox One is not as simple as you might think, he said, noting that it involved the team creating a highly customized version of Windows 10 built specifically for Xbox One. This is called OneCore.

"Windows 10 for desktop PCs has incredible momentum right now," Ybarra said. "We're going to bring all of that efficiency to Xbox One."

As of the end of August 10, Windows 10 had reached 75 million installs. Overall, Microsoft is aiming to hit 1 billion Windows 10 devices by 2018. In other recent Xbox/Windows news, a top Microsoft executive said the Xbox One is "literally a Windows device."

Struggles to run games at 1080p, struggles to browse in the internet even the UI is shit. Hard to believe anyone bought this piece of crap.

@killmoore: if by most people you mean the majority of the console consumer marketshare... then perhaps it is more obvious that they can tell... hence why (one of many reasons) ps4 leaves the shelf only moments after getting there and xb1 is relagated to walls and box scultpure for promotional gigs..

@Mirimon78: Nah it's hype lol. The tittle of best selling consoles helps sells it. Casuals dont care about graphics it's just the sales.

Avatar image for Mirimon78

@freeryu: msft thought the same thing, and even to this day try fluffing numbers for pr spin to get sales because it works on a few who don't know better. Who holds this title though is important as any fanboy would have others know were their brand name of choice in the lead, without really knowing why. But, this is 2015... the average consumer demands more, and has more info available to them. That said... the console selling the most to users is the one publishers and developers will target the most, which in turn brings in more users etc. A cycle of dominance ensuring a victor as long as they maintain the edge of value=cost to the consumer.

I could say it were hype alone, were it unknown which was selling best, but it is known, and the title earned weighs more than so called hype.

The only reason they go on about 1080p is because its one thing PlayStation can do better... even though nobody can even tell the difference between 900p or 1080p.... hmmm maybe if you have like a 70 inch TV.... regardless it doesn't make games better.... frame rate does and Xbox does that better than PlayStation... but it's not exactly that much better its worth bragging about like ponies do there precious 1080p...

@duke_cakewalker: Meanwhile the PS4 struggles to keep a constant 30fps even on their own AAA titles, it can't do backwards compatibility, it can't run it's own shareplay feature without constant issues, and it has no plans on allowing cross-console/PC play unless some third party company wants to attempt it. Hard to believe anyone bought that piece of crap.

@duke_cakewalker: but it lets me watch tv without having a remote. and stream movies from my pc without having a remote. I can basically do whatever the hell I want with this beast with just my voice and phone.

Except play games. But who does that?

Avatar image for Mirimon78
Mirimon78

@Tigerbite2: sarcasm right?

It takes a pc to play the networked media for the xb1 to display it. Something that any modern av receiver, tv, bd player and last gen consoles like the ps3 were able to do, or use a simple "sling"/broadcasting device for 97% less cost.

Tv's and av receivers have long since had voice control, just the same there are universal remotes and control boxes that do that for as low as 15 bucks, and without screeming at your kinect (required for voice command to work.... lol....) just so it can get it wrong again when any button would have done it in a fraction of the time.... (too lazy to press a button now? )

Fyi, unplug the xbox and you still get tv, but at better fidelity and with faster response.

You sure can fldo w/e you want with it thouhh... as long as you already have tv, a pc, hdds and a phone and ......

All it does is what you could already do for less while being better and faster, but this just charges you more for all that and downgrades it.

More speed in the interface, especially when you've got a game running to, would a welcome improvement. Even more though, I want to see the UI redesigned; that mess of tiles just isn't that useful.

Off topic, I read an article saying Xbox One is getting two exclusive JRPG's. Has Gamespot mentioned anything about them? Several people on here have been asking about JRPG's and there wasn't much info in the article. Maybe we'll here something from Gamespot in a week or two?

Stranger of Sword City and Students of the Round 2, both dungeon crawlers, though Exp claimed SotR2 would be more like Shining Force/Fire Emblem. Not sure of that though since the last one was a straight dungeon crawler.

Being as how i was primarily a 360 gamer last gen, this whole deal is working out hella sweet for me. You guys argue. Ive got my choice between res or framerate. Went from ordinary game collection to one of the biggest functioning game collections around. So no ones poopin on the bc deal for me. Ps4 wins this gen though bc you can warranty it while xbox has lost faith in assuring me some sort of longevity w their products. everyones got an opinion but seeing as how consumer reports would agree w mine i shall say mine is better than yours.

Does this November update include Direct X12 for Xbox One?

Avatar image for gottago42

@MegamanX97: Direct X 12 really does boast PC performance and Xbox One performance but it is for the developers and it only works if developers actually use it for Xbox One games i believe it will be used for Xbox One exclusive games but not so sure for multiplatform games

@Mirimon78: haha my bro was always a ps3 guy and until this gen ive always been xbox. I remember him saying same thing right before skyrim release. His game literally became so slow he could no longer play bc according to him, the game was having to remember too much about his game file and to the point of unplayability. Long story short my xbox version never did it. Finished game. Great game. Already starting to happen on my ps4 version of mgv. Sure it wouldnt on an xbox. Different perks to both. Xboxs being better framerate and no game slowdown. This fact makes me wary to play big games on my playstation even to this day. I saw his game crawling and there would be no hope to finish it. Fallout is preordered on my xbox.

@Mirimon78: What? Do you not understand how internet works?

Avatar image for Mirimon78
Mirimon78

@xTheTrueSeekerx: it wouldn't matter if you get speeds in terabytes per second from your isp, when the site you go to is itself lethargic the services provided will only ever work as well as their own server can support it.

There are metric tons of water sitting in the reservoir but you will only get as much as your little hose can put out.

Even at gigabit speeds it takes hours to dl the same game it takes pc and ps users 15 to 30 minutes including installation. Xbl is slow, period, and the only way to make it dl faster would be to move right next to their server farm....

Do you not understand how it works, or atw you under the auspices that everything msft related is the greatest gift to the universe.

Avatar image for xTheTrueSeekerx
xTheTrueSeekerx

@Mirimon78: Sigh, the worst part is you actually believe the garbage you're spewing, I can tell.

Obviously there's a bottleneck. It's common sense. But to attribute any kind of discrepancy between XBL and PSN to anything outside of user influence is just ignorant. For instance, my installations generally take anywhere from 20-30 min on my Xbox One. My PS4 on the other hand.....yep, 20-30 min.

Avatar image for fanboyzrtrash

@3cupsofflower: "Won't do anything" Is Bs and some games already has gotten the help of Dx12 for certain games to reach to 1080p or better framerate but DX12 isn't fully released.

Avatar image for bobnice
bobnice

@3cupsofflower: ya I realize that, only the future games which use DirectX12. Yes MS needs to come out and confirm it. Doesn't seem silly to me, if computers and laptops will get a speed increase with DX12 than why not the Xbox, after all the original name for Xbox was DirectXbox

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@bobnice: The X1 already had a low level API available, so the advantages of DX12 will probably be minor at best. The biggest advantage should be DX12 is probably easier to use for game development, and cross development with PC.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@3cupsofflower: There are a few games that it will help out, but only a handful. I know that the head of SMS(Project Cars) had stated they had programmed their game in a way that was very DX12 friendly(meaning multi-threaded iirc) and that they would be able to see some rather significant improvements in the future.

So games that are in a similar boat can take advantage of DX12, but whether or not they will is a totally different story.

As for CPU & GPU boosts from DX12, I doubt it'll be that much, probably closer to 20/5% at best.
