New Xbox One Update Will Make Some Functionality 50 Percent Faster

Players can expect a "new level of speed and responsiveness," according to Microsoft's Mike Ybarra.

The upcoming New Xbox One Experience update landing in November will make some system functionality up to 50 percent faster. That's according to Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra, who talked more about the upcoming update during an appearance on the latest episode of "Major Nelson Radio."

Ybarra said Microsoft tracks load time data for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the New Xbox One Experience (available now to some testers), and in some cases, executing tasks is quite a bit faster. "Popular gaming features" will load up to 50 percent faster, but he didn't say which exactly these will be. But overall, Ybarra said fans can look forward to a "new level of speed and responsiveness."

The New Xbox One Experience will be available to everyone in November. Also included with the update is backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles, a new Guide, a redesigned Home, and a new Community section. Ybarra also teased that the update will introduce new "accessibility" features to ensure that the Xbox One can appeal to the widest possible market. These features will be announced later.

For everything we know about the New Xbox One Experience so far, check out this post.

Also during the podcast, Ybarra talked about Windows 10's forthcoming integration with Xbox One. Bringing the OS to Xbox One is not as simple as you might think, he said, noting that it involved the team creating a highly customized version of Windows 10 built specifically for Xbox One. This is called OneCore.

"Windows 10 for desktop PCs has incredible momentum right now," Ybarra said. "We're going to bring all of that efficiency to Xbox One."

As of the end of August 10, Windows 10 had reached 75 million installs. Overall, Microsoft is aiming to hit 1 billion Windows 10 devices by 2018. In other recent Xbox/Windows news, a top Microsoft executive said the Xbox One is "literally a Windows device."

I predominantly use my Xbox One. I must say, I'm much happier and at home on it. The interface, the layout, the functionality...the only thing I don't like, is you cannot manage your saves. So, if you f-up in a game that doesn't use a multiple save slot system that you can manage, you're S.O.L. On PS4, I can regularly backup to USB, so if that one thing happens, I blow my saves on the cloud and on the console, and reload...voila! I don't care that Xbox doesn't let you backup on USB, but you should be permitted to create copies and move them to archives within the cloud, if anything. I got Metal Gear Solid 5 TPP on Xbox One, despite it's lower resolution. This was a first for me, as I typically go with the higher resolution, such as on Witcher 3. Wicher 3, I got on PS4. The thing here, is I am so uninspired by the PS3 menu design and little has changed since then. It's still very much a drop down text driven system, akin to that of the original Xbox dash. Menu > Submenu > options > more submenus=lame. Sony tries to polish it up with tile-esque ads, banners, thumbnails, but it's completely uninspiring...but it is fast, albeit.

I like my PS4, though, it is largely covered in dust(hasn't been played since Witcher 1.07), but sooner or later they are going to be forced to compete with Microsoft's console, from a sleek appeal/ presentation standpoint. The PS4 is only doing so well because they insured victory by winning over E3, while MS did the inverse...but this does not ignore the fact that the better console, overall, is the underdog...but then again, it's all about what you take as being "the best." Do you go for appeal, polish, functionality etc. ? Or do you need only pop a game in and have the best graphics? If, the latter, then PS4 is victor...hands down...but sitting in front of a 47 inch TV, 6-8 feet away, I can't tell between 900p and 1080p. Sitting in front of a monitor, which I seldom do anymore, I can. I'm too old anymore to care about menial things like a difference between 900p and 1080p. I guess it's true that with age, you start to see the value and selling points from a comprehensive point of view. Now I know why my father selected the vehicles he did. Why didn't he get that Civic SI, and only get the basic model, back in 2000? He didn't need half the features and only needed the CD player and gas economy...I wanted him to get the SI.

it depends on what version of "multiplat" games that u bought. if you boght xbox version, then you'll spent more on it. but ps4 will flooded with tons of exclusive next year, so prepare for that.

seriously though, xbox will copied that usb save thing. they are now aggresively copied almost every ps4 feature : cross play, cross buy, agumented reality, streaming to other device, bc, etc.

@kopesettik:

Play the same game on PS4 at 1080P and you will see a definite clarity to the picture. (PC output is the best at highest modded resolution.) But in comparing consoles - sorry, but, picture graphics make single player games a lot more enjoyable and colorful and more real life on my 70 in. display. True if you have 50 in or smaller size displays it probably doesn't matter.

Avatar image for theduckofdeath

@themc_7: One guide and mini-one guide need to be 1200% faster. Those apps are so slow that I can't imagine what Microsoft is thinking. Anybody could just hit the menu button on the cable remote and "boom", TV listings. Even that is slow, it takes 2-3 seconds.

How about you upgrade the hardware so the graphics are as good as PS4? I would care more about that than if the load times on my Xbox One are better.

Avatar image for theduckofdeath

@edwardnygma: Your hypothetical XBOne, you meant to say.

Why would they upgrade the hardware to match a marginally "better looking" platform? They will just design a new machine for next generation and come screaming out of the gates. No doubt they will be out for blood.

I'm playing MGSV and GTA V on PC, currently. MG279Q 2560x1440 freesync'ed at 60 fps. Now THAT is a difference worth mentioning.

@edwardnygma: lol? 900p vs 1080p is hardly better graphics, games use all the same textures, assets and physics. There are two types of gameplay experiences, the PC experience and the Console experience. Don't have your fanboyism fool you into believing that one 8 core cpu, 8gb ram, low/mid end gpu machine is better than the other 8 core cpu, 8gb ramn, low/mid end gpu machine...they are very much the same.

I hope they fix the controllers too. I know they are releasing new ones but I'm on my 4th controller already. Inside the thumbstick always breaks and makes it stick sometimes. Then I have this rattling piece stuck in my controller. These controllers were poorly made I shouldn't have to drop 60 bucks every couple months.

Avatar image for Burriscold
Burriscold

@lakernation247: It is an issue with the controllers thumb sticc ball. At least I have also experienced it, but not to your degree. I have 2 X1s 6 controllers between the two and 2 of them (out the box) had issues. Where the left thumb sticc caused the controller to look up no matter what. Returned them both for swaps, but out the box. Only issue. All 6 still work and look new and they get played with plenty.

Avatar image for lakernation247
lakernation247

@Burriscold: EXACTLY MY PROBLEM! it's always the left thumbstick. I actually took my controller apart and did some research and the part in there is so easily breakable. It sucks especially playing sports games.

Avatar image for Crypt_mx
Crypt_mx

@lakernation247: What? I have many friends with X1's, I have 4 controllers myself and not once have any of us ran into issues, I also work at EB where we've had no returns because of that. Whereas the peeling PS4 thumbsticks are a regular occurrence, most people who buy DS4's also buy thumbgrips so that their sticks don't crumble away. That's the only controller issue I see regularly.

Avatar image for Mirimon78
Mirimon78

@lakernation247: it is a fairly common problem, while they changed the headset port it might be a while before we see fixes to the sticks, you might find a 3rd party controller befor that happens.

Avatar image for lakernation247

@Mirimon78: yea I'll look into a different brand.

@lakernation247: most you will find atm will be wit3d, the issue is msft's decision to use wifidirect rather than a common wireless standard.

Avatar image for Zzshock

@lakernation247: the controllers feel cheap. Not terribly surprised that you have had an issue. I recommend getting one of the cosmetic one's. I got the blue camo one and the build quality feels worth the extra $5-$10 bucks. Not sure if that will fix your problem though, but it doesn't feel all crinkly in my hands anymore...

Avatar image for theduckofdeath
theduckofdeath

@Zzshock: I bought two of the grey camouflage (new Covert Forces) with 3.5 MM audio Jack. And fixed bumpers. Inexplicably, they managed to screw up the D-pad again. It is much better on the new black controllers, but not as good as the original XB1 controller's D-pad.
