New Xbox One Controller Release Sports Combat Tech Style

Ten-hut!

A brand-new Xbox One controller is joining the fray this month. Make sure to take off your hats and give a good salute to the latest military inspired controller, the Combat Tech, coming March 27.

Revealed on Major Nelson's blog, this new addition to the Xbox One controller family is part of the tech series inspired by military technology and vehicles. The Combat Tech controller comes in the same military green color that's offered in the Design Lab, with bright orange accents and a military insignia on the front. Like the Recon and Patrol Tech controllers that came before it, it features the same textured laser-etched grip on the front and rubberized grips on the back.

As with all of Xbox One's latest controllers, this one is wireless and has a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has Bluetooth so it can be used with Windows 10 PCs and the Samsung Gear VR. Custom button mapping is also available through the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox One.

The Combat Tech controller will retail for $70 on the Microsoft store and other select retailers starting March 27. In select regions, purchase of this controller will also come with a 14-day trial of both Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Games Pass.

I do prefer the xbox one and all xbox controllers over the playstation controllers since the 6th gen. Having the move and look on different planes just feels right mechanically. Like rubbing your head with one hand while patting your belly with another.

The prices are still too high, for tech that is now more then 15yrs old and manufacturing that is in the tens of millions. Like smartphones that cost hundreds of dollars 15yrs ago, are now mcDonald's give away toys. I would guess there is nearly a 200-300% mark up.

I just bought the Patrol Tech one on Amazon for $50. They are good controllers, just not $70 good. A slight upgrade from the base model.

I wanted to buy the dark blue one. But I just don't like the logo in the middle. It's so silly and out of place. Also rather have dark checkerboard on the handles instead of that brighter color

@moonco: How many "play anywhere" titles does PS4 have? Oh thats right, Ps4(which I also own) doesn't have that option. Having that option alone makes the console worth having. Not to mention now it has superior graphics with the X. And don't get me started on how clunky the UI is on the PS4. It takes an act of congress just to set up a party when compared to the Xbox. I cuss the system every freaking time I want to party up with friends. Its ridiculous what you have to do and how long it takes.

@spartanx169x: What are play anywhere titles?

Party up with friends, you mean like inviting friends into a party and then playing a FPS game? Both consoles do that just fine, from what ive seen. IS it something different?

@spartanx169x: Not sure what you're going on about. There is PS Now, PS TV, and other device-to-device game streaming options available for the Playstation and they're not restricted to just Windows. Crossplay also works the same way except I'd argue it's more valuable because it gives access to Vita titles which is a selection of unique games I'd never have access to otherwise.

I haven't heard anyone say anything good about the Xbox UI since the blades days, so it's no better. I dunno about the party features. Never use them.

@Barighm: Streaming is not the same as having the game installed on the machine. For example Shadow of War is a play anywhere title. I have it installed on my PC and well as Xbox. I have a couple of others as well. I play it on PC in all of its graphical goodness while home and play it on the road on using my xbox. Streaming is obviously not the same.

@spartanx169x: Sorry, I'm a Nintendo fangirl. Not sure why you're trying to turn this into a Xbox vs PlayStation thing?

@moonco: Usually comments like yours are from PS fanboys, my apologies. But being that you are a Nintendo fan you should hardly be throwing stones so to speak with Nintendo's lack of third party games. But I will also say I will be getting the switch solely to game on the go.

@moonco: Well they do have an army of controllers. Love the Sea of thieves one but they are out of those right now. Yes they need more games. E3 2018 better be big.

How are these different from the other Tech controllers? They look the same. I have the blue Tech controller and I love it. It looks like there's actual grip on the front palm pieces, but it's just plastic with design on it. The rubber grips are on the back where your fingers would rest. The range is slightly better as well... Maybe an extra 6 feet.

The only problem is since Energizer doesn't make XB1 batteries anymore, there's really no good rechargeable docking station for the controllers. MS has a wired plugin and the other docks stink.

Why not create/invest in MORE 1st Party games instead new fancy looking controllers? There's enough controllers we can get from elsewhere and we can create controllers from the MS Lab.

If they offered this in a wired version, I'd probably pick it up for the PC. Or, you know, if the 'military inspired' model was Microsoft wanting to do something for our military and all profits went toward helping disabled veterans, thereby making that ridiculous $70 price more palatable. As it stands, I think I'm going to pass.

LOL... Samsung Gear VR mentioned... Still have two in the basement; one unused. Also still have much of the non-uninstallable bloatware sitting on my phone -- huge mistake.

But yeah, the controller is nice.

@ixidjfrizzixi: the controller is already made...they change only the skin.

Hardly money invested.

@alistairbrogan: Why would it be USB C when the actual Xbox doesn't have that port. Can you not get a dongle?

@Daveof89: MS , as do all console makers, do not allow 3rd party controllers without them buying a license and as far as i know, none make a wireless one. Then, all licenses are so high, that it is nearly impossible to compete with first party manufacturers. A terrible deal for gamers.

Now this is a shame though too, because during the 6th gen console makers sued and litigated peripheral accessory manufacturers until they were nearly out of business. Shame to as, making a controller for a certain console is considered legal. For instance a controller is nothing more than a keyboard or mouse or a simple electric switch. But then console makers added a chip to them and said they are now considered proprietary technology - which no court has agreed with. Unfortunately no company could afford the legal battle and all died.

This hurts gaming consumers as a 13 yr old xbox 360 wireless controller still costs $40 even though time and technology should have reduced its price by more then half by now, while improving quality. During the pre 7th gens, some of the 3rd party accessories were even better then first party for a whole lot less- through supply and demand. Now we have controllers that are crazy high and no outside force to bring their price down to a reasonable quality per dollar.

@jenovaschilld: Better check your facts jack as several companies make wireless One controllers, and current gen Rock Band instruments for RB4 are all wireless requiring no dongles - connect natively to console. Most are wired, either due to cost reduction or for less lag response (in professional/performance controllers) but there are 3rd party wireless models out there if you look. Now you know.

And last gen 3rd party peripherals better quality than 1st party? OMFG, I needed a good laugh there. They were crap when compared to 1st party - some were OK but none as good as 1st party at a cheaper price.

@dlCHIEF58: Well i just checked on amazon and didn't see any xbox one controllers wireless that were not ms 1rst party controllers- there were licensed 3rd party controllers wireless controllers who paid the licensed fee- i did see one controller that was a wireless third party non-licensed controller (which surprised me) And your right it was a horrible controller.- . Rock band instruments are, but the instruments are all licensed if you see the manufacturing information.

AS for 3rd party - well mad catz, logitech, and pelican made great memory cards, controllers, and cables. All worked just fine. Many dreamcast controllers and devices worked just as good and were reviewed just as well in many magazines. The first xbox - had the horrible overly large and kidney bean button layout everyone hated. Well before the xbox s controller came out, the goto controller was made by madcatz that ms eventually followed. Nintendo controllers that mimicked ps one were desired for a very long while over the wave bird controllers until the modified theirs. Sega saturn cables were being made by .... forgot .. but for a while you couldn't find extra cables for the first year except through 3rd party suppliers - same for psone as another company came out with the s-video cable for that console as well as xbox pcie cable.

BUT, 3rd party video game accessories really went down hill after the 7th gen onward since they had to pay a very large licensing fee. Most cut quality till they were just junk. All of which i mention in the original post.

@jenovaschilld: i didn’t say 3rd party controllers, I said 3rd party retailers. Just look on eBay, you’ll find sellers with BNIB genuine MS controllers for around $40, cheaper if you don’t care if it’s used.

Xbox One has a bunch of very nice-looking controllers, but $70 is asking a lot for a simple controller. I suppose they are vanity items though.

I hate that baby poop green color but the carbon fiber on the sides really make the controller look jazzy.
