A new video game awards show, The Game Awards 2014, was announced today, and it seems like it could be a big deal. The event has the backing of platform-holders Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as well as major third-party publishers including Electronic Arts, Warner Bros., Rockstar Games, and Ubisoft.

The Game Awards 2014 will take place on Friday, December 5 in Las Vegas--which is the night before Sony's PlayStation Experience community event, which will also be held in Sin City. The awards show is described as a "celebration" of gaming, and one where the industry will come together to extol the "cultural significance of the world's most dynamic form of entertainment."

The event will take place at the Axis Theater in Las Vegas, and tickets will go on sale tomorrow through Ticketmaster for $45 (including fees). However, you can buy tickets today using a special code provided by Xbox. This code is JAMESONLOCKE, a reference to Halo 5: Guardians.

If you can't attend The Game Awards 2014 in-person, the event will be streamed on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC. It sounds like something you'll want to watch, as the event promises awards, "world premiere announcements," musical performances, and "other surprises."

Per a story today from Variety, The Game Awards 2014 features an advisory board made up of executives from Nintendo, Ubisoft, Konami, PlayStation, Xbox, Electronic Arts, Warner Bros., Rockstar Games, and Valve.

The event is the brainchild of video game media veteran Geoff Keighley, who was also the producer of the Spike Video Game Awards, which were later rebranded VGX. Organizers of that show have not yet announced details for an awards show this year, though the event is historically held in December.

Another video game awards show, the D.I.C.E. Awards, will be held in February 2015.
