New Tony Hawk game likely for 2012

Legendary skateboarder says fresh series entry "probably" coming sometime next year; developer/publisher not named.

In early February, Activision announced that it had put the Tony Hawk skateboarding series on hold, saying that no new franchise entry would arrive in 2011. However, the birdman will crash back onto the scene in 2012, if comments from Hawk himself prove accurate.

Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.
Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.

In an interview with PixelatedGeek, Hawk was queried as to whether or not gamers can expect more Tony Hawk games in the future. He responded, "We're going to do something probably for next year but I can't give too much away." Activision officials have said they still see potential in the franchise, saying in December that Tony Hawk has the staying power of Michael Jordan.

The most recent Tony Hawk game--Tony Hawk: Shred--was developed by independent studio Robomodo and sold under 3,000 units in its first week. It was the second game, following Tony Hawk: Ride, to use the much-maligned skateboarding peripheral.

the only way to bring life back into the TH series is by bringing back the Pro Skater series and making Pro Skater 5, i feel like the public would respond well to that. They can make it in the same format with choosing levels, have the classic goals (collecting tapes, skate, etc) What would make it great, even if they kept button controls instead of stick controls as in the skate series, is if they simply had more realistic physics. Im not talking quite as realistic as skate, but definitely not so crazy where you can go off a ramp pull a 1 million point combo and land smoothly 80 stories below you. it would still be arcade style, but more grounded to reality. What would make it stand a chance would be the physics, superb level design, top notch graphics to compete with skate (none of this cartoony BS) and they could outshine skate with customization options for skater/board/parks. I spent so many hours in the pro skater series and underground as a kid just making a million different parks. If they threw all that in there, with a good split screen multiplayer & good online play, and of course make the levels 'free skate' available, and the levels as i said would have to be superbly designed but also a significant size as well. If they did all that, i'd pick it up and i bet you so would every THPS fan from way back when plus a whole new audience of kids who only know skate to be the good skating game around. But, i doubt any of that will happen. One can dream, right?

He should have ended his speech with "We are legion", held out the mic sideways at chin level, dropped it, and walked off the stage. You see, he needs to be edgy.

Did anybody else play the original Tony Hawk (blue cartridge) ON N64? That game was tight, but they've overdone it since then. People need to realize that it is a bad long term business move to release a new entry in an elite franchise so often. Release one every 3-5 years and it will increase demand. Increase one every year and we get sick of it.

'' Tony Hawk ; Rise of the Eagle will have players co-operate on multi-layered objective based-missions, with a powerful character editor and insane tricks that will use the entire technical proficiencies of the skating board controller. Reviews are already predicting a 5.3 metacritic score for the game, and they're probably right. ''

The last games I liked in the series was Downhill Jam (Wii) and Project 8 on the 360. But after those games I stopped playing the series because I didn't like Proving Ground.

I'd play a Tony Hawk game if they went back to the old days or American Wasteland.

Return to the roots. That's a good idea. I'd rather have a rehash of THPS3 than anything they've put out since Project 8. Usually, I would encourage change, but neither Neversoft or Robomodo know how to make something new without completely screwing it up somehow. Also, the skateboard peripheral is the worst piece of junk I've ever tried.

The first step is to decide if they want to be an arcade game, or a simulation game. Trying to be both has only wound up making messy games with uneven gameplay. Maybe they should try to return to the glory days of Tony Hawp Pro Skater 2 and 3, because every oddball change since then has only taken the franchise deeper into the void.

How hard can it be? Go back to THPS2 & 3, the best games in the franchise. Make different levels all over the world, add lots of challenging objectives and keep the gameplay just like how it used to be. Ditch the crappy peripheral, go for the standard, working Tony Hawk controls and you're miles on your way to create a proper sequel to a series that has steadily gone down the crapper. I miss the good old Tony Hawk games. The THPS3 you could pick up, choose a level and work on an objective over and over. No deadtime, no mindless skating all around a city, just cleverly constructed levels, objectives and lots of fun in a compressed, focused manner. Just like how it used to be.

i think they should take a hint from WWE all stars and and say to hell with physics and whats possible in real life and just come up with a game with great gameplay and a couple huge cities set up as skateboarding mecas. the skate series has realism covered, tony hawk should be all about the impossible and the ridiculous

I want the old gameplay back, no plastic board please. Just stick to what made the original games fun, arcade skating with a hint of humor and random environments. Tony Hawk games aren't really supposed to be realistic. May i suggest a Nitro Circus theme? I want something zany and ridiculous.

Won't ever beat Skate this gen, but last gen Hawk owned the scene. Underground 1 and 2 were incredible skateboarding games. You know what... I want a PS3 Collection of those two games!

I used to love the franchise (Underground is still my favorite) but with the recent releases, I find myself looking to "Skate" to get my fix on Skateboarding games. The Tony hawk franchise just feels flooded with these games that aren't subsequently (If I'm using this word right?) better then the last.

Activision should stop milking the franchise! Better yet, cut snowboarding out and go back to the days of TH Underground or TH 4.
