New Tony Hawk game likely for 2012

Legendary skateboarder says fresh series entry "probably" coming sometime next year; developer/publisher not named.

In early February, Activision announced that it had put the Tony Hawk skateboarding series on hold, saying that no new franchise entry would arrive in 2011. However, the birdman will crash back onto the scene in 2012, if comments from Hawk himself prove accurate.

Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.
Tony Hawk keeps the wheels spinning with a new game next year.

In an interview with PixelatedGeek, Hawk was queried as to whether or not gamers can expect more Tony Hawk games in the future. He responded, "We're going to do something probably for next year but I can't give too much away." Activision officials have said they still see potential in the franchise, saying in December that Tony Hawk has the staying power of Michael Jordan.

The most recent Tony Hawk game--Tony Hawk: Shred--was developed by independent studio Robomodo and sold under 3,000 units in its first week. It was the second game, following Tony Hawk: Ride, to use the much-maligned skateboarding peripheral.

Go back to THPS, the 2:00 timer days, and re-implement a fun, creative Create-A-Park feature using today's consoles for their potential (and perhaps a well-updated online mode). If all that manages to come back, they may have me again, that was when it was fun to play.

I wish Tony Hawk would just fall off a cliff or something, he's just an obnoxious 40 something year old who still thinks he's 25. Hell, all skaters can just do a 180 off the same cliff after him for all i care.. most idiotic people on the planet.

perhaps they have learned their lesson with the whole skateboard peripheral and decided to go back to what worked, make a simple fun game that people don't have to risk falling on their face to play. If people wanted to really ride a skateboard they wouldn't be inside sliding back and forth on a flimsy plastic board, they would be outside on a real skateboard.

Tony Hawk is 42 years old. His radical 'tude has been worn out and milked for over a decade now. Can we just let this series die now? If you're going to do a skateboarding game fine, I don't care. Just for the love of god do something remotely new or interesting. Adding a peripheral that does not work is not innovative, it's a death sentence. The fact that this series is still crawling on the floor of relevance is beyond me.

This is their last chance to turn this game series around. I hope it's better than their recent entries in the series.

THPS4 was the last great game in the series imo. The series took a nosedive from there.

So let me get this straight. Guitar Hero, one of the pioneering rhythm franchises, is put down after a mediocre year of milking. Yet Tony Hawk gets the green light for another atrocious game whose peripherals dont even FUNCTION properly?! Something is wrong here...

OR, you could (bear with me) wait a bit longer, and make a new TH game then. Does Activision even wonder why the latest GH or TH bombed? Good franchises, but damn... they not only ruined the franchises, but the entire genre for both games by releasing too many games. Mind you, at least Tony Hawks was only annual, unlike GH.

For the love of all that is holy, don't let the board peripheral make a return! Go back to the roots! Pro Skater 2 through THUG 2. That was the good stuff.

Activision, you're last few Tony Hawk titles were terrible to say the least and so were the sales. So why not listen to the fans for once and give us a classic style Pro Skater 5 or even just remakes Pro Skater game(s) in HD? Surely, it is not hard to see that either of the two ideas I mentioned will sell alot more games than the kind of ideas you have been coming up with lately. People if you agree with me than thumb up. I'm not a thumb-up whore, I just really wanna see how many more people want the same thing I do.

It's going to be a challenge for them to be innovative without ripping off Skate. They could go back to the old formula, but I think Skate has this franchise beat.

Tony Hawk is not Michael Jordan by any stretch. MJ didn't have games to make him famous. Also, unless the new entry has 2 story modes (classic and free world roaming) and online multiplayer and leaderboards, I think the series should just end.

Tony, Tony Tony Tony, did you not learn from the last few games you put out? Nobody liked them and they sold horribly, the last good Tony Hawk game was probably Tony Hawk 2 or the first Underground, other than that they went downhill from there. I really hope this next game is good, learn from the mistakes and put out something that's quality for once.

I'm surprised Activision hasn't considered trying the HD remakes with the THPS series. If they released THPS 1, 2, 3, 4 and THUG in HD with Trophies/Achievements I'm sure it would sell pretty well. That and actually make a fun Tony Hawk game again :P

Tony, your PRo Skater games were amazing and you had a fantastic run, but it's time to take your 200 million dollar fortune and ride your board off into the sunset.

I think they need to make the controls like Tony Hawk's Underground ( i liked the freestyle tricks), and make it basically the Little Big Planet of skateboarding games. People can create levels, not just parks, in 3D and upload them for others to skate and rate. No gimmicks, no peripherals, just a good level editor, intuitive controls, and a cool online apsect. This wont happen, whatever they make, it will probably suck.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was the most perfect and best Tony Hawk game. Everything after it like THPS4 and THUG tried adding window dressing like a story mode and the ability to free roam. But that just served to cover up how great Tony Hawk's Pro Skater actually plays. You don't need all that side junk.

Blame Activision for ruining games. They flood the market with garbage. THPS was sweet in the beginning. Hopefully Tony Hawk will man up and tell them to shove their plastic fakeboard where the sun don't shine, and finally make a real game.

What potential? You mean the last 3 few games that got terrible reviews and nobody didn't buy it. Why in the hell would that change a year later, its still going to be a bad game and no one will buy it.

No new crap.. Please!! Just re-release THPS 1-4, Underground 1&2 and American Wasteland in HD and end the series for good. It just sickens me to think that kids today are going to think that THIS is what a Tony Hawk's game is... While we're at it, re-release all the other "pro" something games in HD, no new crap, just the classics unedited but ready for this gen of systems.

Tony Hawk was amazing up until American Wasteland. Which is actually one of my favorite games ever... after that, the games are nearly un-playable. If they just go back to how they used to make games... it would be a hit. We want ridiculous missions, 90s lingo, and unrealistic skating.

When I first heard they were going to use a skateboard peripheral I IMMEDIATELY knew it wouldn't last for long. It'd either be a BIG hit or it'd completely flop. Looks like I was right. Hopefully the series gets back on track because I've always been a HUGE fan of the series since even the first game. I know this series still has some good life in it. Give it a fully new game engine and everything and it'll be back on top I'm sure of it...as long as Activision doesn't milk it like it did Guitar Hero and Call Of Duty...
