New Tarantino Movie's Release Date Moved Up To Avoid Manson Murder Anniversary

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be out in July 2019.

Acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino's next movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is coming to theatres sooner than expected. Sony has announced that the Charles Manson movie is now scheduled to arrive on July 26, 2019, which is two weeks earlier than its originally announced August 9 release date. That date was notable because it marked the 50th anniversary of the murder of Sharon Tate and others by Manson's followers.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Sony moved the date to give the film more time to succeed during the summer, not because of the anniversary timing.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's story is being kept under wraps, but it's not expected to be a simple re-telling of the Manson murders. Instead, Tarantino has described it as a "story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood."

The main characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). DiCaprio's character is a former star of a Western TV show and Pitt's is his stunt double. They are both on the outs in Hollywood; and Rick lives next door to Tate. The first image from the movie was released in June, showing off DiCaprio and Pitt in character. Tarantino wrote the script and is directing the film, which could be one of his last movies.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's cast includes lots of other famous people such as Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, James Marsden, Emile Hirsch, Burt Reynolds, Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, and Michael Madsen.

DiCaprio and Pitt have worked with Tarantino before; Pitt starred in Inglourious Basterds, while DiCaprio was in Django Unchained. This is the directors's ninth movie; in 2016 he stated that he would retire from directing after ten films, so it's possible that Once Upon a Time In Hollywood will be his penultimate film. It was recently reported that he was writing a new Star Trek film. Last month it was confirmed that there are multiple Star Trek movies in development at Paramount, but it is unknown if Tarantino's is one of these.
