New super-slim PS3 model on the way?

FCC documents indicate Sony preparing new console rumored to be smaller than current slim model; may be announced at Gamescom next month.

A new PlayStation 3 model appears to be waiting in the wings. According to a Federal Communications Commission filing (spotted by Japanese website Pocket News), Sony is preparing a new 4000-series PS3 model, an update over the current 3000 line.

The new PS3 would be even slimmer than this, if rumor proves true.

The filing does not mention dimensions, but Eurogamer "has heard" that Sony is preparing to announce a slimmer PS3 model at Gamescom 2012 next month. If Sony does announce a new PS3 model at the German industry event, it will not be the first time the company has done so.

At Gamescom 2009, Sony announced the PS3 Slim, a system refresh that is 32 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and uses 34 percent less power than the 2006 launch model.

A Sony representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."

During the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo last month, Eurogamer quizzed Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida about the possibility of an even slimmer PS3 model, to which the executive teased, "We should never say never--hardware guys are always looking at ways to make things cheaper, smaller."

Why would I want a newer PS3 if they made it with cheap components? cheaper normally means inferior.

@Lyca it might be inferior in terms of looks, and/or inferior in terms of durability, but performance will be the same, if not slightly better :) so as long as you dont throw around your ps3 it'll do fine xD OR it might be the complete opposite - technology advances each year but also becomes cheaper each year so you might get a superior ps3 :P just saying

Avatar image for Lyca

@EdotheHero if it said it was confirmed as having advanced components on the box that's a different matter :D

I'm not a rock star so I won't be throwing my current PS360gig out the window - it may be built like a breeze block but hey it's got backwards compatibility

Avatar image for EdotheHero

@Lyca yeah it is a shame.. and also a pretty random thing to do ("should have have BC on our new playstation?" "hmmm how about we only have it on the 60gig version" "yeah ok") LOL

@EdotheHero haha no way I would have xbox and half the fan community chasing me down. But I can see why you though that at first. PS3 only did backwards compatibility on the 60gig version shame really.

@Lyca for a moment i envisioned a combined ps3 and xbox360 machine that you built when you said PS360gig, but I figured it out eventually :P

haha same here. but mine doesnt have backwards compatibility lol :/

If the PS3 slimmer 4000 model is just about size whats the point of replacing it. There has to be more to it.

It could be cool for people who wants to own a PS3 but for people who already own it .... i don't think they will be interested to spend money On it just because it is slimmer :)

@Gamer-Elias Agreed. My PS3 Slim works just fine.

I hop u can play PS2 Games

Well, if the price is the right then this is a good thing, adding PS2 BC would be nice for both new and old gamers (who already own a PS3) so they buy the new version.

If it is cheap enough I'd buy one. The only reason why I'd buy one (never owned a PS3, 360, or Wii for that matter) is too make my Vita even more useful. I'm a PC gamer through and through but I do enjoy my Vita.
