New Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Promo Teases The Emperor's Return

Ian McDiarmid is back as Emperor Palpatine.

The hugely anticipated Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is only a few weeks from hitting theaters, and the promo material is coming fast. In the last week we've had some stylish character posters, a new batch of imagery, and the first clip from the movie. They've now been joined by a new teaser.

The latest teaser was released on Twitter to promote ticket sales for the The Rise of Skywalker, which releases on December 20. There's quite a bit of new footage in there, including more of the fight between Rey and Kylo on a rain-soaked planet, the Millennium Falcon involved in a spectacular space battle, and the first footage of a new alien called Babu Frik. But most excitingly, the teaser has a voiceover from Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine, accompanied by John Williams' iconic "Duel of the Fates" theme. Check it out below:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is directed by JJ Abrams, who previously helmed 2015's The Force Awakens. It stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Mark Hamill as Luke, and Billy Dee Williams as Lando.

Abrams recently revealed that despite tight security, the script for The Rise of Skywalker was leaked and put up for sale on eBay. While Abrams was initially reluctant to say which of the cast was responsible for allowing the script to fall into the wrong hands, Boyega subsequently admitted it was him.

In related news, the first live-action Star Wars show, The Mandalorian, hit Disney+ earlier this month--check out GameSpot's reviews of Episode 3 here. In addition, it's been reported that a director has been lined up for the Star Wars movie due in 2022--and we might find out who it is in January.
