New SSX in the works at EA Canada?

Snowboarding series reboot reportedly in the works for Xbox 360, PS3; may include heliboarding, avalanches; VGA reveal hinted at by EA Sports.

What we heard: Last month, rumors of a new SSX game sprouted up following the registration of the Web domains SSXFirstDescent.com and SSXDeadlyDescent.com. Now, Kotaku is claiming to have inside knowledge of the title, which is apparently in the works for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at EA Canada.

According to Kotaku's anonymous source, development of the new game is being handled by the team behind the popular Skate games. As such, the title will apparently have a similar control scheme, with the right analog stick being used to perform tricks as players hurtle down snowy slopes.

Could this be the first glimpse of the new SSX?

More intriguing is the report's reference to surveys sent out this summer, which indicate the game may have content beyond normal snowboarding outings. The survey, which was apparently targeted at SSX fans, reportedly described "avoiding, out-running and even riding on top of massive avalanches; battling hurricane winds; white-outs; bitter cold; falling rocks; and gaping crevasses that open up at a moment's notice." The game was also rumored to have not only heliboarding, but also other extreme sports such as base jumping, skyboarding, ice climbing, and wingsuit flying.

The game itself was described as "an intense, moment-to-moment battle against the forces created from riding your snowboard over the most spectacular and remote mountains on Earth." This led Kotaku to wonder if the game is the same as one being teased for a reveal at the VGAs this Saturday. Brief footage of that game asks players if they are ready to "Take on the planet" and shows a series of snow-capped peaks and a helicopter flying over a mountain summit with a flare atop it. Kotaku reports a similar-looking piece of art (pictured) was sent out alongside the snowboard game survey taken earlier this year.

A direct connection between the "Take on the Planet" game and SSX publisher Electronic Arts was made yesterday, when EA Sports president Peter Moore directly promoted the reveal via a blog post.

Moore described the game as "an obscure new title that's been teased alongside new trailers and announcements for Gears of War 3, Resistance 3, and the new game from our partners at BioWare. Set on what appears to be one of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet, this is one we're watching with a lot of anticipation. Hope you are too…."

The official story: EA had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. The fact that the head of EA Sports--which includes a studio at EA Canada--is promoting an "obscure" title set on snowy mountaintops is a hint less subtle than a black-diamond wipeout.

Please let this be true. Geez, it's been quite awhile since a new SSX...Just made it a lot like SSX 3 and we'll be fine...don't do anything too gimmicky...

SSX 3 was a masterpiece. I wish I had checked out more of their series. I was sad to look them up a year ago to find the series dead. This news makes me happy!

I'm one who actually liked, if not loved, "On Tour", and I was already waiting for some sort of "sequel" or at least a similar follow-up to that game. But all the features mentioned in the rumor sound interesting enough to me. So, bring it on, would be cool to see and play.

Yet another reason why the NBA Elite franchise will continually be delayed LOL EA Sports would do well to develop a greet reboot of the SSX series. People might have forgot how much of an impact these games made on the gaming scene in their heyday; they were on the Madden level of anticipation and exceeded expectations unlike the Madden games.

@DriftMachine So what? I don't play the game for some minor graphic change. You can watch me play games you want to play on the console while you stay on your computer whining about how PC is better.

SSX(2)Tricky was the best hands down. The tracks in Tricky were incredible. I would love to see that on arcade with multi-player. I doubt that will ever happen since celebrities did the voice overs and I'm sure EA would have to pay them for a digital re-release. SSX 3 and on were just plain BAD!!! Single mountain had bad tracks and the skiing was awful. Stick to the snowboards.

I want something similar to SSX3 but expanded upon. I care not for base jumping, ice climbing, wingsuit flying....gimme some good snowboarding. I think the odd avalanche or falling boulder could be fine. I'd like there to be an open world mountain like there was in SSX3 though.

@DriftMachine The PS3 runs on Linux and both Linux and Mac OS X are UNIX-based systems, but that's it. Apple did not make the PS3's OS and the PS3 is waaaay incompatible with Apple computers as of now. And I'm playing both on PC and PS3 myself, but I see a huuuuuge catch in your "if you have the right set up" statement.

I wish all the games were available in PC. I don't know why Xbox which is Microsoft, doesn't sell a program to operate all the x360 games. They do everything else. The ps3 should do the same. I think it might be harder for ps3 to make a program to operate their games on the PC. PC's always look better than the consoles. I have done some side by side comparisons to other popular games. The Pc smokes any console in looks and speed, if you have the right set up.(quad-core processor, 4 gigs ram and a $150 video card or better)

Amazing. EA is doing good things for the industry and Activison is intent on raping franchises for all their worth. I never thought I'd see the day.

This is good news. Seems EA is taking the SSX series to even more extreme heights. SSX 2 and SSX 3 were pretty wild themselves, but racing Avalanches down mountains with hurricane winds at your back sounds pretty fun to me. I wish they would revamp some of the other BIG titles.

I hope this is true. SSX was an amazing series for at least three games and then it kind of went downhill. They need to make another fantastic game like SSX Tricky and SSX 3.
