New Spider-Man: Homecoming Poster Is Star Studded Hot Mess

Lots of heads.

49 Comments

The latest trailer for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming was released earlier today, and it has now been joined by a new poster. It's very much in the "floating head" style of modern movie posters--a chaotic mess of people looking in different directions, with little sense of what the film will deliver. But it gets the film's big stars and iconic characters on there, which is presumably the whole point--check it out below:

No Caption Provided

The film opens on July 7 and stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr, Marisa Tomei, and Donald Glover. In a recent interview, director Jon Watts spoke about how Homecoming would differ from the various Spider-Man movies that have preceded it.

"I think it has a unique, surprising tone that's different from the others, and different from the other movies in this universe," he said. "I'm pretty proud of the tone we struck. It's fun. It's able to go from a very small story, and really emotional small stakes and just get bigger and bigger until it's on a massive scale without ever losing sight of the story we were trying to tell."

A new Spider-Man game is also in development for PlayStation 4, made by Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games. A release date hasn't been announced, but we know it won't follow Homecoming's story.

I literally lol'd at the headline.

I'm still giggling.

This poster is terrible. 😂

Not a fan of the poster, but I don't hate it.

From what I've seen in the trailers, all I care about is Tom Holland as Spider-Man. I don't care what the movie is about as long as I get to see Tom do Peter Parker things and Spider-Man things. I'm 1000% on board.

I think they would have been better off parodying something like The Breakfast Club's poster, but with Tom Holland dressed as Spider-Man.

there's a certain irony to Michael Keaton starring in a superhero movie after Birdman

Avatar image for kylvin318

@Naylord:

Well the whole casting of Keaton in Birdman was supposed to play on the ironic aspect of him actually playing a fictional superhero in real life (Batman) some 20 + years before.

A washed up actor who at one time was at the top of Hollywood stardom, who's most remembered role is now a fictional superhero... It's Keaton's life in a nut shell, and he embraced it in that role and rode it to a reinvigorated 2nd life to his career.

The new irony of him actually playing a Birdman in Vulture is hilarious. His roles seem to be really meta now

@Naylord: Especially since he is a 'birdman' in this

@nabinator & @Naylord:

I think that was the "ironic" part of his joke (aside from Iron Man of course,lol). But yeah, nothing wrong with making jokes even more obvious. :P

And don't forget, Keaton is--of course--also famous for playing a certain winged character in the distant past.

The poster is nothing more than "My first Photoshop". I want to see the movie and I'm really not nitpicking but it's definitely got an amateurish vibe to it.

If you took a souped up DeLorean back to the early 80s when I was a kid and told me that in the year 2017, Iron Man was used to help get people to come to a Spider-Man movie, I would have laughed you all the way back to the future. If you also told me that in the future an Ant Man or Guardians of the Galaxy movie was made and was crazy popular, I would have swallowed my tongue.

This is a really weird thing for people to nitpick. All the superhero posters are generally garbage. Anyone remember iron man 3? Not to mention the trash that is the BVS posters

I don't see anything wrong with it... it shows who is going to be in the movie, conveys the hero, villain and setting. Why is everyone whining about it?

Is this a practice that's only okay with Star Wars, or something?

@Tamz: it was a joke but is it confirmed He is staring in the movie? You would think his name would be at the bottom if Zendaya's is, I will go out on a limb and say she is not "staring" either so the omission is strange.

Why in gods name is Jon Favreau on that? Everyone else makes sense, even though there are two Michael Keatons.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@snugglebear: Nah first I noticed there are two Spidermen. Then I noticed there are two Iron men. And only then I noticed there are two Vultures as well.

Reminds me of those movies where 1 actor plays ever role. Like, you know, that african god thing with sand, and sand, and pyramids, and sand.

Plus Favreau will obviously again be Tony's babysitter. So Tony can be Peter's babysitter. Not complaining though because I loved Jon's appearances.

"...it has a unique, surprising tone that's different..." -- Umm, tsk, yeah... I don't know about that. I mean, unless all the trailers/reports we've seen so far are totally WAY off on the script (which means it's being dishonest anyway), I don't see anything unique or surprising or different about this Spidey flick--aside from the techier costume & the stupid full title (even my Mom smirked at it). Hmm, now that I think about it, my friends and I were actually more excited to see Andrew Garfield's interpretation of Spider-Man. And believe me folks, that's saying somethin'.

Full disclosure: To be fair, it's also possible that we still haven't forgiven him for siding against Cap. ;)

Avatar image for Tekarukite
Tekarukite

@June-GS: It's cool, hold that grudge. ;)

I think the tone they are talking about it is the high school setting. One of my favorite scenes in the trailers is Parker saying he wishes he (Iron Man) would stop treating him like a kid - as he's literally hopping up and down on his bed. I died. :)

Avatar image for June-GS
June-GS

@Tekarukite:

Hahah. I know you're probably just being sarcastic anyway, but I agree. Because they obviously have NEVER depicted Spider-man's story "tone" as an angsty aww-jee-Aunt-May teen with oh-so-cute high school problems.

Hmm, more over, after thinking about it for all of one second, let me add to your 2nd point 'cause you hit on something there: No other live-action Spidey that I know of (well,I wasn't there in the 70's), is as "childlike" as this one. Not Garfield's Spider-man, and certainly not Maguire's. And yet, he's the only one who's ever raised that "treated like a kid" issue or--excuse me--"tone". And with Tony Stark no less, arguably the biggest man-child in the world (complete with his own grown-ass babysitter Favreau). Now that's IRONY, my friend. ;)

Avatar image for Tekarukite
Tekarukite

@June-GS: love it!

thanks for pointing that out!

I think the article mentioning that the tone would be different, was comparing this movie to the other movies in the MCU. It looks different than Guardians or Thor, for example, or any of the Capt. America movies.

Avatar image for June-GS
June-GS

@Tekarukite:

So basically, they're saying that his tone is "unique", because he's the only teeny-whiny superhero in the entire MCU, while the others are all adults with adult stories? Okay, I hear ya. And I'm fair enough to say that I can somewhat "get" that distinction. But honestly? To me, that's just a cop-out (on their part). The true test of uniqueness (or at least freshness) is if we compare this Spider-man's "tone" to the other live-action Spideys'. In other words, is his tone unique or at least different enough from THEM? NOT from the other characters in the MCU. To paraphrase a classic analogy: The true--and fair--test of the quality of an apple is comparing it to other "fellow" apples, NOT to the oranges & grapes & bananas that just happened to be in the same fruit bowl that it's currently sitting in. As you can see, that's an incredibly unfair test. Because if we do that, then OF COURSE it's going to be "unique & surprising & different" from all those other fruits. :)
