New Shots: Links 2001

We take a look at the latest build of Microsoft's golf sim.

GameSpot has received the latest beta build of Links 2001 from Microsoft, and it looks like the game is progressing nicely. The Links engine has been revamped to include 3D objects such as cliffs and bunkers mixed in with antialiased 2D objects such as trees, shrubs, and the golfers themselves. These two effects actually work well together and give the courses in Links 2001 an authentic look. The animation of golfers in Links 2001 is equally impressive, as Microsoft has motion-captured the actual stance and golf strokes of Arnold Palmer and other pro golfers. Sound clips have also been included to give each golfer added personality, and they will even react depending on how well you perform on a particular hole.

Links 2001 is due out in late October.
