New Shenmue 3 Trailer Shows Off Combat

Strike swiftly.

Ever since its unveiling at E3 2015, Shenmue III has had very little new information revealed about it. Aside from gaining an official release date after suffering not one but two delays, publisher Deep Silver has kept the project largely away from the all-seeing public. However, a new trailer shows off the game's engine and combat. And it looks pretty good.

The trailer, just a smidge longer than two and a half minutes in length, starts with series protagonist Ryo Hazuki wiped out on the floor with the mysterious girl, Ling Shenhua, kneeling over him. Some random thug with hair like a helmet, who's likely the one responsible for Ryo lying on the floor, mocks him.

The trailer then cuts to Ryo following up on reports of some goons searching for something called the Pheonix Mirror. After the duo investigates some leads, we then see Ryo training with some mysterious hermit familiar with his father, Iwao Hazuki. It's here where we see Ryo engaged in two battles, showing off the game's combat. It's reminiscent of early 90s/early-aughts fighters like Virtua Fighter or brawlers like The Bouncer. You can view the trailer below.

Shenmue I & II launched on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 21, 2018. The collection coupled the two Dreamcast classics together with HD visuals, smoother frame rates, and reduced shimmering effects. Thanks to publisher Sega and the collection's developer d3t, this Shenmue I & II collection is the best way to experience the cult classic on modern hardware.

Shenmue III is slated to launch on August 27, 2019 for the PC and PlayStation 4.

Huh...not really sure how to feel about this to be honest.

On the one hand, this looks very much like a continuation of the previous two games, but on the other hand....it's been almost 20 years since those games...and Shenmue 3...it looks like it plays like it too. I don't want to jump to conclusions without playing it though (made that mistake before). I'm sure hardcore Shenmue fans will enjoy it, heck I've played them so...I'll probably enjoy it, but....after an almost 20 year wait for a third installment that originally started on the Dreamcast? Well I think that's gonna hurt this game in the longrun. Call it overly high expectations...the 'Forever' syndrome as it were.

But I understand, It's for a niche group of people, people who grew with the Shenmue games on the Dreamcast, or Xbox. Or people who happened to stumble upon the games, loved them, and awaiting to see how the story unfolds.

Wow, this is an embarrassment. :( I like Yu Suzuki and was a big fan of Virtua Fighter back in the day.

THIS looks like PS2 graphics and the animations look terrible! Like this was done as a student project... from 10 years ago? Seriously WTH?

Every Yakuza game from 0 to 6 tells a unique and self-contained story. The story of this game has been stretched over 3 iterations, yet there is no sign that it’s gonna end with this 3rd one. As for the combat? Nah, I’ll pass. Look stiff as hell.

This is looking super niche guess the core fans won’t be disappointed but as someone who’s never tried the series this doesn’t make me want to.

The pseudo-blend of cartoony and realistic graphics coupled with old, stiff animations looks grody.

I’ve been a huge Shenmue fan since the beginning, and I’ve been dying for a third, that being said, I am no longer excited for this. This already looks super outdated. I get that they don’t have the budget of other games, but man...

@angrycreep: Yeah. I’m with you on that. Unless it just ends up getting great reviews.

Getting more and more excited. Did the kick starter the first day lol. Amazing the time we live in never thought we'd see a sequel. Ahh the future. I got a feeling if you didn't like the first 2 you won't like this one.

I get people aren't feeling this. Personally I think it looks kinda quirky. I have gamed for years and are getting bored by the formulaic triple A games these days. Gimme a diamond in the rough any day! This could be one.....

My suggestion would be to track down the old team and get some help from segas developers specifically the one behind yakuza that would work well.

@pookeynoodle2019: this is called catering to all customers. Sony just has to keep doing what they have been doing this gen. They have the exclusives and the go to online gaming network.

@pookeynoodle2019: yes they do have the exclusives. Everyone doesnt buy every game. That's what catering to everyone means. And mostly oriental oriental is incorrect and just trying to move the goal post. There's actually some awesome games from Japan like Yakuza or Final fantasy.

I lost credibility? Really well guess what then I guess you can give reality low credibility also. The fact that the biggest MP games sell significantly more on PS4 goes against you so your "low credibility" comment only goes so far. Another side of ignorance from you that I can help with is every company gets hacked which Includes all console companies. A little research will get you that info. Yes the X is more powerful but i still don't see a game that looks better than God of War. Power is good if you know how to use it. Another fact is the X is that niche oriental game that you were talking about..... Not many people buy it (oh wait sales don't matter now?). The majority play on the weakest OG Xbox or the S. The majority of xbox gamers get the worsed. Everything else you mentioned is minor or doesn't matter to most of the 100M people. Fanboys who want to go on a rant mention it though.

Some notable games in 2018 were l:shadow of the collusus, MLB 18, yakuza 6, astrobot, yakuza 2 remake, God of war, moss, fist of the North Star, Spider-Man, firewall zero hour, Dragon quest XI, tye persistence, Detroit..... That's just the ones I've played and don't include PSN games. The 1st reason most people purchase these consoles is for games and that's where Sony nails it. You can either accept the info or be delusional.
