New Saints Row Game Will Be Revealed In 2020

We'll find out much more about the return of the Saints next year.

In August, we found out that a new Saints Row game is being worked on. It was revealed that a new entry in the series was "deep in development," and that it would be a full Saints Row game, not a spin-off. Since then, though, we haven't heard or seen anything else about it. Now, Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz has spoken out about the next game in the series, which is in the works at series developer Volition.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Kundratitz says that Volition is being allowed to take their time and get it right. "With Volition, we have the creators of all the Saints Row games as an internal studio and they're not going to be distracted by anything else from creating our next game under this important franchise," he said. "Saints Row is very close to our hearts, and we'll talk about it next year. For the time being, we just wanted to get the word out that it's coming and it's going to be great."

Now Playing: New Saints Row Game Reveal Coming In 2020 - GS News Update

The last official release in the Saints Row series was 2015's Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, a standalone expansion to the last mainline game, 2013's Saints Row 4. During this console generation, we've also seen the 2017 spin-off Agents of Mayhem, which ultimately underperformed, leading to layoffs at Volition. The rights to the series have bounced around over the years: the publisher, Deep Silver, is owned by Koch Media, which was, in turn, bought out by THQ Nordic last year. The first three Saints Row games were published by the original THQ.

The next game in the series has not been named yet, nor is it clear which consoles it will come to. Earlier this year, Saints Row: The Third released on Switch, and a spin-off film is being planned.

This series really hooked me in after Saints Row 2, and Saints Row 3 had so much more customization than 2 which made me like it even more... then in Saints Row 4 with the super powers the series got even better.

I'm not sure if I can go back to anything less than Saints Row 4 in overpoweredness. Even Agents of Mayhem which was supposed to be a super hero type game made me feel weak compared to Saints Row 4.

Main thing they need to do is increase the city/world size, in SR4 you can fly across the entire city in literally a couple minutes, that is way too small. They need to keep the character customization as well, Agents of Mayhem didn't even have this, it made it a lot fun not being able to create your own character.

I don't want a GTA clone, I want SR to go in its own crazy direction like its been doing since Saints Row 3. Even in Saints Row 2 you could tell they gave up on taking anything seriously, the whole game was hilarious, even when Gat's useless wife dies.

It needs to be like Saints Row 1&2. Best GTA clones I've ever played.

So absurd and over the top, while still feeling 'gangster'

I love the Saint's Row games, but the later installments were starting to get a bit too out there. I'm hoping they're not trying to top Saint's Row 4, because I can't imagine an SR game being anymore outlandish. I think of the Sharknado franchise when they try to top ridiculousness just to be ridiculous. I hope they ground themselves a bit with the next one.

@JustPlainLucas: Agreed about Saints Row 3 and 4. I honestly liked it better when it was just trying to ape GTA: San Andreas in 1 and 2, that whole fantasy direction they took it in the later ones, just didn't click with me. That whole playing as the President and fighting aliens I thought was just too ridiculous and outlandish. I don't even care if it's copying San Andreas or whatever other GTA, as long as it's a GREAT clone. Just don't give us any more of that over-the-top fantastical crap that was 3 and 4, and I'll be cool with it.

Make it fun and not tedious. Allow for heavy customization. Include third-person perspective. Make it unabashedly irreverent, while still balancing absurdity with a compelling single-player story.

Profit.

@ProjektInsanity: that's everything the previous games got. SR was always 3rd-person.

@deliverersbestfriend: I understand. That was my roundabout way of saying "as long as they remember what makes SR good, this one should be fun."

I'm with the rest of you hoping for something to land a little closer to Saints Row 2. That game was a blast, especially co-op (my brother and I boot it up and playthrough again about every 4 years or so). I loved that 2 still kept the sillyness, but never went TOO over the top. I liked earning my crazy arsenal or abilities, like having to skydive into a car to unlock no fall-damage (which was hilarious when ejected from a car), and the increasing nonsense of the side-missions was great fun. SR3 was great, too, but told a choppy story, by comparison (did Gat just die, via narration, without a cutscene? I'm confused...or did he not?). Some people don't play the games for story, but, well, I did, because I thoroughly enjoyed the shifts from nonsense to serious. All is fun and games until you get revenge on a villain for murdering your friend by packing his significant other in the back of a truck and letting him smash it, unknowingly. Also, I liked the driving, and with each subsequent game, you didn't need to drive, given the ability to fly and jump over buildings. I'd be fine if they skewed closer to SR3, too, but maybe not much further, for my taste. Anyway, curious to see how it ends up.

@Oloryn: I agree. SR2 is what got me hooked on the series. SR3 was fun but way too easy and SR4 just sucked imo.

So where exactly can they go from here? They've already made the main character the US president and in the last game you had to fight aliens in the matrix. Can't really see a way forward from this. A restart or prequel seem like the most likely options.

I just hope they bring back the diverse cityscape like Stilwater 2.0 was. Steelport just started to look kind of same-y after a while.

If this new one plays as a gray area between SR2 and SR3 than I'll be happy. SR2 had the best exploration and city but SR3 was way more fun gameplay wise and the right amount of sillyness. Even though SR4 and Gat Out of Hell were too over the top they did have fun weapons so I do hope they borrow that aspect.

Please go back to the roots of the original Saints Row & 2. Those two had a perfect blend of dark, potty humor with surprising serious story moments. 3 & 4 are okay games when played with a friend but the whole superhero US president jumped the shark imo.

Hopefully they'll continue with all the crazy over the top weapons, vehicles, story, and general fell of the later games. If I wanted to play a GTA clone they're a dime a dozen. I want to bast though an alien space ship in and Ironman style power armor while "The Touch" by Stan Bush plays. Lets do Time Travel this time! I wanna go bush whack Hitler with The Penatrator.

@alaannn: But we've got GTA for that. Saints Row 2 was boring AF because it was just more GTA. Saints Row 3 was the first one that felt like it had it's own identity and wasn't trying to ride the coat tails of this other popular franchise.

@alaannn: Well, some of us don't like the GTA formula. Even the original devs described their game as a "straight GTA clone" and didn't seem very happy about it. I'd rather see the game they love to develop rather than the one they were told to develop.

@Barighm: well they had enough chances making a game not in the gta formula and they didnt make one good game 2 of there parent companies went bankrubt because of them and lots of them were fired after the last game didnt sell so maybe they should of made the game fans wanted,if they wanted to make somthing else say that dont take a established francise with fans and add a completly different genre to it make a new francise
