New Rise of the Tomb Raider Expansion Promises "Hours" of Gameplay

Get the scoop on Endurance Mode, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and Cold Darkness Awakened.

[UPDATE] Microsoft has provided release dates (and release windows) for Rise of the Tomb Raider's other upcoming DLC packs. The company also published official descriptions for each; see them below.

  • Endurance Mode -- December 29
    • Fire takes fuel, cold kills the unprepared, food restores health, but everything must be caught, collected, or crafted. You start with nothing and must find everything. Challenge friends to your longest survival run and battle to the top of the leaderboards for the title of Ultimate Survivor. Includes a new outfit and weapon.
  • Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch -- Early 2016
    • Featuring hours of new gameplay, this adventure expands the story of the main campaign with Lara facing deadly new adversaries, exploring a new puzzle-filled tomb, and solving a decades old mystery, all culminating in a showdown with an ancient and mythic evil. Includes a new outfit, and a new bow.
  • Cold Darkness Awakened -- 2016
    • Decommissioned during the Cold War, a dormant weapons research base has been breached, unleashing a mysterious affliction into the Siberian wilds that transforms beasts and men into blood-thirsty, mindless killers. Lara must overcome increasingly dangerous waves of these infected predators while scrounging their equipment and crafting additional gear on the fly, in kill or be killed survival-combat. Fight for your life against new enemies and complete new challenges, while discovering a way to stop or perhaps even reverse this impending catastrophe. Includes a new outfit and weapon.

The original story is below.

Microsoft and Crystal Dynamics have provided a new look at Rise of the Tomb Raider's upcoming expansion, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and offered more details about what players can expect from it.

First, the expansion is due to arrive in "early 2016." It's included with Rise of the Tomb Raider's $30 DLC and will also presumably be able to purchase separately.

A new gameplay video for The Temple of the Witch also reveals some of the locations and enemies that players will find when journeying through its setting--a "forbidden forest" in Siberia.

"Lara enters the Wicked Vale in search of a missing man, but what she finds is a nightmare that she cannot explain," Microsoft said in its description of the expansion. "Is the witch, Baba Yaga, truly haunting the forbidden forest? Or is there more to the legend?"

The expansion will culminate in a "showdown with an ancient and mythic evil."

Overall, The Temple of the Witch boasts "hours" of gameplay, Microsoft said. Other upcoming content for Rise of the Tomb Raider will include the Cold Darkness Awakened expansion and a new Endurance mode. Crystal Dynamics will also continue to support the game with weapon skins and new outfits.

Rise of the Tomb Raider launched on November 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. According to the game's director, Microsoft and Square Enix are "very happy" with its performance, though no official sales numbers have been announced. The game comes to PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016.

Glad to hear it's coming to Playstation. Kinda of a slap to the face of all the Sony fans who made the franchise great to sell it to Xbox first.

Can you guys please tell me if the season pass is or will be available for Xbox 360 as well? I saw it available on Amazon but it clearly specified that it was only for Xbox One. Please help!

Too bad no one is going to buy it just like the game itself seeing how it's not a sci fi shooter which is something that M$ fanboys only care about.

Anyways, it should come to Wii U also seeing how the 360 version looks almost on par with the Xbone version.

@DeadPhoenix86: I can't say I noticed that too much, what was the issue was that, as someone that plays on easy first, to see what the game has to offer in content, and then on hard after (that is, if I like the game at first, or feel the game will benefit on the harder setting), the auto aim is locked behind difficulty, and the auto aim is extreme. I hate auto aim, and it was a bit too much in this game.

I dislike it when you press down the trigger when you're not looking at anything in particular, and then it automatically targets a specific thing in the environment and a certain placement on it. For instance, in human enemy encounters, I'd aim in, and rather than let me try to aim at a guys head for a quicker kill, it goes directly to his stomach, and sometimes sticks to it, or slows down as I try to aim elsewhere. The game was really good though. I, unlike the first, did everything in it on the first go before the credits rolled.

The story wasn't strong, but I liked the voice work and dialogue a lot more than the firsts, and the auto aim (only with easy) was a bummer; I wish I could have turned that off. The game still doesn't rise (pun not intended) to the high quality experience I think it could gameplay wise, but it's a nice step above the first, and one of the biggest issues I had was a game breaking bug, though fortunately unbeknownst to me, you can reload a previous save.

@NTM23: I've played thru in normal mode without any assist, and the game runs very well. Any death was my own fault, because aiming was very fair to me.

@FBohler: Oh, yes. The game runs really well, and death was never an issue. Also, I don't think fairness was necessarily something I had in mind when I was thinking about the aim assist, I was simply saying I disliked it. No, if anything, aim assist would make it easier, so I would be complaining for the opposite, but I'm not complaining about how it makes it easier or harder, simply how I don't like the feel of it, because I like aiming myself.

At some point, I might go through on its hardest; the game's good enough. As for difficulty, I know many people like to do normal difficulties, but I've never liked doing the in between settings. For me, it's either the easiest, or the hardest. I was however complaining that it unfortunately doesn't simply give you the choice to turn aim assist on or off, as it's locked behind difficulty. That's not new in games, but I always like the choice instead.

@FBohler: You can't just turn it off, it's locked behind difficulty like I said, and I said I may play on hard later, which would fix it. I should also clarify again that I didn't dislike playing the game; I enjoyed it a lot. I did everything in the game in that one playthrough though, so my motivation to play it again isn't there right now, especially considering I'm still trying to get through Fallout 4, trying to do everything I can there, and then back to AC Syndicate to finish up all the side stuff there too.

@NTM23: its really noticeable for me. i have aim assist off. because i want to aim myself. and i play on normal mode.
but I've died allot because i couldn't get a clear shot. i've played the Tomb Raider from 2013, and that felt much more responsive.

this game needs a control fix badly, or else i won't be playing the game, until the PC version will be released.

@DeadPhoenix86: Hm, well I haven't noticed it myself other than the auto aim issue, but yeah, I don't see why they can't update it to fix the issue you're talking about. I know others have complained about it as well. Naughty Dog fixed it in Uncharted 3 (which is also, something I never had an issue with).

@cboye18: lol yep. So much for being an early exclusive when all theyre doing is milk the fanbox userbase and give more to the PS4 for less in the long term.

"Hours" of gameplay for any DLC should already be a given, this shouldnt even be a bullet point.

@johncas89: "Should" be a given, but isn't. Dude above pointed out that the last TR didn't have any story DLC.

If I gotta live in a world with DLC, I hope to see the day when it all has story. Or, at least that my children live to see that day.

Why? It sold around 300K WW, it flopped hard and was no where near US charts Black Friday.

@Random_Matt: A shame. Dumbest decision ever to go timed exclusive. Considering TR's fan base basically lives on PS and PC it was easy to see this would flop.

@domiddian: Do you remember if Mass Effect's DLC was included on the PS3 version? I'm not sure about that, but I guess the situation is different here. Anyways, the game looks good and I will surely buy it and enjoy it, no matter if the DLC is included or not.

@StonerDemon: I bought the Mass Effect Trilogy box set on PS3 and yes, DLC was included for the first game and SOME was included for number 2. I had to purchase a hell of a lot of it though for number 2 and 3. I remember because my girlfriend at the time gave me a PSN voucher worth £30 and I pretty much spent the whole lot of it on Mass Effect Trilogy DLC!
