New Riddick game in the works

Vin Diesel says the team behind Escape from Butcher Bay has been reassembled to create a third installment in the series.

A new Chronicles of Riddick game is in development, actor Vin Diesel revealed in a new interview with ScreenCrush (via Eurogamer). The untitled new game is in development by Starbreeze Studios team members who worked on 2004's Escape from Butcher Bay.

"My diehard gamers want [Tigon Studios] to deliver the third chapter in the Riddick game," Diesel said. "And we just over the past couple of months, just this year, reassembled that team from Starbreeze that brought Escape from Butcher Bay to create the third game."

No details regarding platforms or a release date were mentioned. It does not appear that the new game will tie in with Riddick, which released in theaters last week.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was released in 2004 for the original Xbox and PC. Sequel Assault on Dark Athena launched in 2009 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Escape from butcher bay was one of the best movie based games i played of that generation. I hope its as good as that one

Avatar image for chronocommander

Escape from Butcher Bay is an excellent game and having those people finally make a proper sequel is awesome news. Didn't play Dark Athena and didn't hear good things about it but hey, I personally think the original game is the best part of the Riddick universe, more can only be a good thing!

Avatar image for udubdawgz

both riddick games were great, with creative innovations and i trust that a third game would be equally great.

Avatar image for quakke

I hope it will be more in the lines of EFBB as opposed to AODA. I found AODA's "borrowing" of enemies guns kinda dumb. The first game gave you alot more freedom in every aspect. Please go with inspiration from the first game.

Well. Butcher bay is a really unique game with an awesome world and atmosphere while Dark Athena is no more than a half of what Butcher Bay is. Let us hope that the third game will stand up to Butcher Bay name and will be even better without burdening gameplay with stupid boring quests "ALL THE SAME DO THIS GIVE THAT OBTAIN THAT type"

Good news. I'm playing the two previous games and I'm enjoying them a lot!

Avatar image for Xenro4

Waste of time if it's gonna be like the other Riddick games.

I want a female lead!

Seriously though I'd absolutely welcome a proper sequel. Stealth-genre has become so sad gunblazing that a guy stalking in dark eerie space stations armed with a shiv sounds infinitely interesting. Assault on Dark Athena was a bit dissapointing, but it's still up there in my lists.

However there are so many modern hurdles: Regenerating health, cover system, infinite ammo in basic weapons, QTEs, crazy shooting and more

After seeing the most recent Riddick movie, I could definitely do without a game if it's going to follow the same storyline. Two hours of wandering through a dessert with a dog....meh. Bring back the Necromongers. THAT I would play.

Avatar image for AceCometh

I hope it's a single player game in the same spirit as Escape from Butcher's Bay and Dark Athena. MMO's? Screw that. I'd renew my WoW subscription if I wanted to play one of those.

Avatar image for NTM23

I'll say it again hoping people read it this time, this is going to be an MMO, and the games creators aren't the same as the ones that worked on Butcher Bay, most of those people went on to work on the new Wolfenstein. Starbreeze, the people that worked on the recent Brothers game, isn't working on this either, it'll be Tigon.

Please dont change the fighting style PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEESSEAE!!!!!!

The best realistic fighting style is reddick and the best stealth style, Every game tried to copy that style has failed, Like Mirror Edge>>> The free running was Awesome and it feels like reddick but the fighting was fair, unlike Reddick its the best running, Stealth killing, Gun shooting and melee fighting For an old game, So far am still playing it cuz i dont know why i feel the ONE who made Riddick the game is a GENIUS, Give a every new game 2 years and then you will realize that the game is losing it touch BUT Reddick.....Am Sure if they made this game 100% exactly the same as the old one with improving graphic, more open maps, more stealth and more melee fighting style, IF they done everything with A THIRD PERSON SHOOTER, For me the game is dead BUT IF they done it FPS AND i dont care if anyone dont like fps anymore, ill be the first one who buy it.

They should make a mmo for the "riddick universe or whatever"

where u can revisit all the prisons hes been too and a few large scale maps of sort

well he wouldnt want to go back to the prisons hes from so, it would probably take as much work as gta has put into their games, given all riddick games have some serious cinematic feel to just About every moment or chapter wherein.

cant forget the great melee system and awesome voice overs, etc. It doesnt sound plausible if you want to make a game within 2-3 years.

maybe 4-5 for mmo style, Still everyone wants to be riddick in that universe. I suppose they could make it so for every server, theres only one riddick and everybody either chases him or helps him. the more you help him, the more bad guys or bounty hunters go looking for him. And what keeps riddick in the spotlight, well there has to be a reason why or how hes being chased across the galaxy. Of course this mmo should be first person, like some kind of First person RP game.

anyway w/e the reason hes being chased around, could be cuz hes trying to save someone or people or whatever. And please less shooting and more fighting

thats the problem, if its mmo and your riddick being chased, in every movie or game sequence, its a specific circumstance designed by the devs to make it possible for melee. Given being open world, thats kind of difficult to do since bounty hunters would rather shoot you.

@drclaw_ They are making it an MMO, but it's not going to be that.

Avatar image for drclaw_

@NTM23 @drclaw_

whats it going to be like? hmm you must be an inside man ;P

Great news

Avatar image for The_Godfather_

That's good news. I hope they'll manage to write a more memorable story.

Avatar image for NTM23

@The_Godfather_ It was somewhat basic, but it was memorable, to me at least.

Avatar image for NTM23

This isn't new news actually, he said this in an interview with IGN, but they had never reported a few months back for some reason, and it's not necessarily a sequel or prequel to the games. Unfortunately, for those that loved Escape for Butcher Bay, as I was, this may not be your type of game.

They're making it an MMO where you take the role of, it was either bounty hunters, or the necromonger soldiers. I hope I am wrong on that actually, and I misinterpreted what Vin Diesel said, but I'm pretty sure that's what he said.

I wish it was another stealth first person shooter adventure game, when it comes to all the cinematic talk about games, that aspect to me, was truly emphasised in that game in a great way. It was the first game I had played the really brought out Hollywood sounding music.

I've played many games before it, but still, the music in Butcher Bay is amazing in that Hollywood-esque kind of way. One last thing; I find it unfortunate, for me at least, that the games, based off the films, are way, way better than the actual movies, and the new one doesn't looks great either.

Avatar image for wickedsc300

I loved both Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena. Can't wait for the new one to come out on next gen consoles, should be awesome.

Avatar image for woomar

Escape from Butcher Bay was one of the best video games i've ever played , and the same team who made it is working on the new one ...amazing.

Avatar image for naryanrobinson

I wasn't a huge fan of either of them actually but I did think that the second game in the series was nowhere near as bad as was made out.

Avatar image for zhaffy

Ulak Blades, here I come

Avatar image for Jasper_73

am glad its the same team working on it!!

Avatar image for TheJamin

Just no DRM for PC please.

I had to install a no cd crack to play dark Athena because the drm installer kept crashing to deskop.

I had to crack the game even though I bought it...

Avatar image for junglist101

I'm not holding my breath... EFBB was an atmospheric masterpiece and the latest game, Assault on Dark Athena, was a colossal piece of shit.

Avatar image for NTM23

@junglist101 No, Dark Athena was great too, just not quite the big sequel we would have hoped for, but as a fantastic expansion, definitely. Furthermore, aside from the music being changed (though still great sounding), and a few other changes, the games is mechanically superior, as said above I see. It made Butcher Bay play even better when it comes to leaning, at least.

Avatar image for parrot_of_adun

@junglist101 A bit much for the hyperbole, there. It was mechanically superior, but It was *marginally* worse in every other way, that's it.

Besides, as I understand it, Starbreeze's shake-up happened just before AODA, so it wasn't really the same people that did EFBB.

Avatar image for Jasper_73

@junglist101 i really enjoyed them both i thought assault on dark athena was really good??

Avatar image for xepha537

This is very good news!

Avatar image for Pete5506

Butcher Bay was fantastic, and would love to see another game of that quality

Avatar image for burnteyeball

@Pete5506 I completly agree! It was such a masterpiece in my opinion and felt like it reflected very well with riddicks character in the movie. I am very excited to see what they do this next gen from the same maker.

Avatar image for Imperiusmax

its Pretty much the only movie franchise to have good video games so I am expecting great things!

Avatar image for kid_Jump94

still have the previous games, I never regretted buying them, hope its damn good anyway ^-^

Avatar image for AlexFili

Vin Diesel is a great guy for buying the rights to his character. He obviously wants the Riddick franchise to succeed and best of luck to him.

Avatar image for Merseyak

this is great news cant wait \o/

Avatar image for Senior_Rosa

Maybe not best movie, but the character is definitely awesome, and so are the games. I am looking forward to this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar image for TheDarkSpot

Fantastic! Best news I've heard in a while.

Avatar image for fatee

Damn, I forgot all about the riddick games. Seriously best "movie" game ever. EVER.

Avatar image for kalipekona

Oh f*ck yeah. I was just thinking yesterday how much I wish they would make another Riddick game and then a day later I see this news.

I love the Riddick universe and Escape from Butcher Bay is one of my favorite games of all time. Assault on Dark Athena is also pretty damn good.

Very happy about this.

Avatar image for Psycho_Hands

This news made my day.

Avatar image for stalin_ksa

Butcher Bay is the most underrated game of all time due to the terrible movie to game trend

Avatar image for fatee

@stalin_ksa idk, it was before that stuff was caught on, no?

Avatar image for kalipekona

I agree, man. It is one of the best games I have ever had the pleasure of playing.
