New Resident Evil 2 Microtransaction Lets You Unlock Everything For $5

A new microtransaction comes to Resident Evil 2 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Capcom's Resident Evil 2 has added a new microtransaction that lets you unlock everything. The price? $5 USD / £4 / $7.50 AUD.

The "All In-Game Rewards Unlock," as it's called, provides immediate access to the 4th Survivor and Tofu Survivor modes, along with costumes, weapons, and concept art. Among the weapons included are the Samurai Edge handgun, LE-5 submachine gun, ATM-4 rocket launcher, and minigun, all of which come with infinite ammo, according to Eurogamer.

That's notable because ammo scarcity is a factor in Resident Evil 2, so these weapons ensure you are always prepared.

All of these items are normally available through gameplay, so this option is available for those who want to speed up progress. The microtransaction is available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Resident Evil 2 launched in January, and it has been a big hit. By Capcom's latest count, the title has shipped more than 4 million copies worldwide.

GameSpot's Resident Evil 2 review called it "a terrifying experience like no other."

"Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it's also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series' finest entries," wrote critic Alessandro Fillari. "But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story's conclusion."

The article made it seem like it also came with the costume pack, which it doesn't. That's a separate dlc with the soundtrack for $15.

The description on the Xbox store is very vague. I got more from reading user reviews than the description.

At least this is optional. Back in my gaming days, we earn stuff by unlocking cool stuff through playing the game.

@thomaswmak: You do, by speed running through the game and earning a high rank. That's a pointless reason for most people to play the game, just to unlock this stuff. And by the time you actually unlock it, you've played so much that you don't even want to play to use it.

Once upon a time there was a thing called "Cheat Codes" that would let you do this.
This is just a monetized cheat code...

Oh man, I'm so on board with this. Probably my biggest issue with modern survival horror games is the scarcity of ammo, and the resulting sense of panic that the game tries to maintain. A little bit of that is fine, especially when it's in small chunks spaced out over the course of the game, but I hate the feeling of constantly rushing thru entire areas just for the sake of protecting my health, or leaving a bunch of monsters alive just because I need to conserve ammo. If $5 is all it takes to make that go away and let me explore at my own pace, I'm down.

on pc, you could it get free by downloading someone's 100% save file and replace yours.

on ps4 and xbox one: too restricted on save files due to the trophy and achievements tied to it and can't used someone's 100% file to override yours.

i remember back in gamecube, original xbox and ps2, save files are free to transfer to another system without any restrictions.

@nintendians: Not completely. I remember the PS2 having an annoying copy protection (MagicGate) on some games' save files. It would prevent certain save files or extra data from being transferred to another memory card. This pre-dates online gaming, so I always remember being confused as why this was even neccessary. They were my save files and there was no online ecosystem that could be messed up, so why not let me do what I want with them.

I mainly had wanted to back up my save files after having a bad experience with one of those mega memory cards for the PSX. It acted like 8 cards in one and it decided one day to corrupt all my save data on it. From that point on I always wanted backups of my save data. Can't tell you how sad/mad I was that day. Lol.

@lion2447: on the ps2, i most played metal gear solid 2 and 3 and never had to copy files much.

that's why i don't used 3rd party stuff much, they tend to break down fast.

Whilst I'll never understand people celebrating the fact you're paying for what would be the equivalent of fast forwarding a movie/tv show, at least the actual game hasn't been compromised by any pay to win feature being dangled in your face, as it's just the unlockable content that's being (re)sold.

@good_coop89: I'm not getting it but in this particular case, it's not fast fowarding a movie. They still get to play the game brand new, just with better weapons, costumes and characters.

@Vodoo: I can't say I approve of Capcom's move, because such unlockables used to be available by cheat codes in the past (not in RE games though). Charging money for them doesn't feel right.

They could have made it a free DLC. It doesn't cost anything to them to release this. Not 1 minute of extra work. DLC should be made and sold when the company does ADDITIONAL work AFTER the game's release. Only then it is acceptable for me.

That being said, I agree with you that by the time you manage to earn all the infinite weapons by yourself, you have already played through the game so many times that you are usually too bored to play again to actually use them.

@alien33: while I agree with you, this is probably the price we would have paid for that free survival DLC last month. I like it that we have this option, but it feels like this should have been patched in and the other dlc should cost few dollars.

Not too bad for 5 dollars. I've beat the game multiple times with each character, so now I want to have some fun with it...plus I wanna see the rest of that concept art lol.

Games like Super Weekend Mode and features like this (expect to see this in many Capcom games in future) its a slap to achievement/trophy hunters/game completionists
