Double Fine Productions has provided an update on the development of Psychonauts 2 and offered a look at test footage of the game. As noted in the video below, the majority of the content shown here was created purely to test how the game will look and play. As a result, it isn't likely to be used in the final product.

Zak McClendon, Psychonauts 2's project lead, and Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer walk through a new version of Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, a key location from the first game. However, it has been rebuilt using Unreal Engine 4 as a way to concept how the game could look.

Watch the video below to see the footage; it starts at 1:16.

Mccleddon and Schafer also show off the new model for main character Raz, his movement, and some of his basic traversal abilities such as walking, running, jumping, and gliding.

The duo then move onto Action Land, where some of the new moves and powers that "aren't ready for prime time" are being tested. It's essentially a virtual jungle gym where Raz's jump distance, climbing, swinging, and other manoeuvres are figured out.

There's also a bit of combat, but this is highlighted as being as being in the very early stages of development as the team is still coming up with new powers for Raz.

Psychonauts 2 was announced at The Game Awards 2015, alongside a crowdfunding campaign. Since then, more than 20,000 backers have helped raise a total of over $3.8 million.

McClendon previously said he wants to improve "the stuff that's obviously fixable" in the sequel. Key areas he highlighted included the camera, the overall level of polish, and the way protagonist Raz controls.

Schafer revealed story details for the Psychonauts 2 in a Reddit AMA. You can check out GameSpot's exclusive interview with Schafer on Psychonauts 2 here.

If you haven't played the first game, a PlayStation 4 version of the original Psychonauts was released on June 7.
