New PS3 model pics surface

Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications agency reveals new ridged form factor for third model of PlayStation 3; registers hardware in 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The evidence is mounting that Sony will soon introduce the second major revision to the PlayStation 3 hardware. As reported by Tecnoblog, a Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications regulator Anatel includes details and pictures of a new PS3.

The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.
The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.

The most prominent changes to the hardware are the system's ridged and uneven top panel and apparent lack of a visible disc-loading slot. That suggests the system will have a disc tray with a flip-top lid (like the original PlayStation hardware or the PlayStation 2 Slim) or a sliding panel. As for the size of the system, it appears modestly smaller than the current iteration of the PS3. The Anatel filing also notes that Sony sought approval for versions of the hardware with three different-size hard drives: 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The new model of the PS3 has been outed before, most concretely through a Sony Federal Communications Commission filing for a CECH-4000 series of the hardware. Additionally, unconfirmed reports had Sony set to announce the new PS3 model at Gamescom 2012 next month. The German industry event also played host to Sony's unveiling of the PS3 Slim in 2009.

It kinda looks like the right side could slide over top of the left side, so maybe thats how you access the disc compartment. Looks kinda cheep so maybe the price will be to, sure would be nice if it would play ps and ps2 games as well. That would wrap up this gen nicely and give gamers a reason to buy this redesign.

I have A ps3 already, besides the GB of this new model, what else is it capable of doing? unlike the xbox newest model the reason to buy that was b/c it was incapable of getting the RRoD and it had better ventilation and smaller. so what's the new perk for buying this PS3 besides more GB?

I don't care for the design but a 500 GB is a strong selling point.

@Jadashake Yep. I had to delete games and demos all the time when I had a 120gb hard drive. I've not had to do that once now that i've plugged in a 500gb drive, although I think I might need to start doing that again soon.

Sure 16gb is workable but you won't be getting the best out of it for sure. I think, as someone said. maybe it is a typo and should have been 160gb. Are 160gb drives really that expensive? I wouldn't have thought so.

But either way I don't find this slimmer model exciting at all and I was thinking of maybe getting a slimmer model if they release one, but if it's a top loader I think it means it can't be used vertically which means it needs more desk/shelf space whereas I want one that will be smaller and more practical. And this one looks a little ugly too, so I think i'll be passing..

Those ridges are there so that when you cook a burger on it it gives you nice grill lines.

Looks cool but too little too late in my opinion, I have the old chunky glossy one and the top is so marked from wiping it it looks terrible in light.

I think the slim should have been the original and then this be the later slimmer model, another afterthought, I'm just wondering how much that'll cost in the UK, and 16GB is a really dull idea aswell because the PS3 installs almost everything to its hard drive, could only install about 3 or 4 games maximum at one time.

Seriously, 149,99 for an ugly 16 GB PS3 would seem like a good strategy to me... Am I day dreaming?

@BibiMaghoo Price cut !!! A 4 GB Xbox isn't any more clever... But with a 129,99 price tag whenever it goes on sale it sure as hell helped Microsoft's sales this last year! Make it more accessible, get people hooked, justify an expensive upgrade of the hardrive, that's probably the strategy. I just hope that the 250 and 500 GB versions get a lower price tag too.

@pidginnn I own a 250 Gb Slim and have around 30 Gb left now... if you are a Plus subscriber you get out of room pretty fast (specially now that they are "giving away" full BD games, some of them take 10+ Gb each)...So, it depends on what you are going to do with it. I woul'd get anything under 250 Gb for sure.

@Supabul or just buy Crapcom games where all your DLC is already on the disc so you only need a couple kb to unlock.

This is not a bid at selling new hardware to current PS3 owners. Just like the slim it's an update that first of all aims at making production cheaper, so that Sony can either lower the prices or score some more money. The 16 GB version feature flash memory instead of a traditional harddrive. Since you can't get a new harddrive for less than ~$50, and 16 GB of flash memory sells for only ~$10 Sony should be able to drop the cost of this model by ~$40.

Whats with the ridges? the Xbox had those and it was a pain to keep clean. These console designers really don't think things through enough its either piano black that looks a complete mess after a few days or its ridges that will never clean. What ever happened to good old smooth satin finishes?

This seems alright , who cares about the amount of storage is easily fixed , maybe some people just want the 16gb for online multiplayer if it is cheaper and gets more people with a playstation 3 then it has worked

Don't like the ridges, slim was just fine size wise, people already upgraded their HD when the wanted 500GB's worth of space. I don't really see the point of this.Yeah, its good that you're trying but honestly just work on nailing out all the kinks in the current systems.

if it's a 16 gb drive, you may as well not include a hard drive and save consumers the cost, because they'll only buy that model to swap it out.

@q-bert39 your not serious are you? you do realize that you can upgrade your hard drive? and the hard drive (HD) has absolutely nothing to do with how "powerful" it is. thats the storage space of the unit. i have an old 80 gb fat ps3 and one day i upgraded the hard drive to 500gb. i only paid like $70, that is much smarter than buying a whole new console. by the way if this was actually just one of your attempts at sarcasm, lol then better luck next time friend.

The PS3 is ugly enough, and so was that PS3 concept controller. In fact, like the controller, stick with the PS2 design. Repackage a PS3 into a PS2 shell and I'll consider buying (another) PS3.
