New PS3 model pics surface

Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications agency reveals new ridged form factor for third model of PlayStation 3; registers hardware in 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The evidence is mounting that Sony will soon introduce the second major revision to the PlayStation 3 hardware. As reported by Tecnoblog, a Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications regulator Anatel includes details and pictures of a new PS3.

The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.
The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.

The most prominent changes to the hardware are the system's ridged and uneven top panel and apparent lack of a visible disc-loading slot. That suggests the system will have a disc tray with a flip-top lid (like the original PlayStation hardware or the PlayStation 2 Slim) or a sliding panel. As for the size of the system, it appears modestly smaller than the current iteration of the PS3. The Anatel filing also notes that Sony sought approval for versions of the hardware with three different-size hard drives: 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The new model of the PS3 has been outed before, most concretely through a Sony Federal Communications Commission filing for a CECH-4000 series of the hardware. Additionally, unconfirmed reports had Sony set to announce the new PS3 model at Gamescom 2012 next month. The German industry event also played host to Sony's unveiling of the PS3 Slim in 2009.

It's a good idea from sony. The market has to be "re-awakened" by something new.

16 gigs? How do they hope people will use the machine? Netflix? I would get a 250 or 500 to hold my growing library of games from both of my PSN accounts. I'm about maxed out on my 160. I don't mind if it's top loading either and I have no clue why they bothered with the slot loading to begin with, it just adds more cost to the machine and I'm always paranoid that my discs are gonna get stuck in there. I don't think it's ugly, I just care if it works well and even more if it's cheap! Let's see a 250gb machine under $200!

@FlakeyCrust If I didn't already have a PS3 I would buy the 16GB then replace the harddrive with a laptop drive. Currently I have a 320GB 7,200RPM HDD in my original 40GB system. The stock drives are 5,400RPM so the extra speed helps things load a bit faster and things run smoother in open world games. When playing Oblivion I never had the pauses to load world as you run about.

@PuNkeRoiD bro relax we dont know if this is the final product of PS3 extra slim yet, w8 until they announce it. If its the same as on this picture then go and buy a slim if you like it, you will have time to do that because they are not going to take the slim version from the stores at the same day of the announce :)

@juboner That might be a consideration, but your PS1 didn't have a hard drive to store games, so users will probably be loading discs less often.

@lm316 lol bro PS3 slim is using Cell processors on 45nm not on 90nm that the original used, there is no logic on what you are ssaying. Sony only does this because they are not going to realise PS4 soon + they want to spend less money to create a PS3 that they do now.

@Suikogaiden the price ofc will be lower than the PS3 slim current price. IMO it will be on 100-200 euro max.

@Auronvolgar uhhhh 100 euro is too low. i could see this selling for around 150 euro min. i'm assuming they're aiming for the price of the 360 slim (which is 200 dollars?) so around 150 euro

@thunderboltx7 imo a good move will be if sony keep the price of PS3 extra slim lower than the current price of xbox 360 + the lower price of 100 euro is for the 16GB model.

People, people, people! Its just like all the other "remakes" of same systems that Sony does. Its not that they are releasing it new features. The point is for them to save money. The newest version is going to be even cheaper to manufacture for Sony than the current slim is. They do this with every system and if you already have one it is pointless to go out and buy it.

@wickdawg01 Yeah but think of all the R&D that went into it from an engineering perspective. And the changeovers on the production end.

Will they really be saving all that much, I wonder?

@PixelAddict yup they saving a lot. The reason for that is the following. PS3 created with 90nm PS3 slim on 45nm that made them capable to create from the same size twice CPU and GPU, etc. PS3 extra slim will be using (imo) 22nm that means sony will be able to crete from the same size of material double PS so the cost for them drop close to half from before

My 160gb slim seems small enough. Was there really a need for a third size?

@Auronvolgar Yes but the consumer cares not about these things. Price is king. There is also the factor of potential for confusing the customers with too many options/changes.

Really? Do you honestly not have the capacity to consider all consumers, not just those like us who live and breathe gaming?

@PixelAddict bro if a consumer is confused by a new release of extra slim PS3 i can only say one thing about that customer less than 10IQ. Customers dont confused with DS, DSi, DS lite, DSi XL be at the same time on the market. And they are going to be confused from one PS3 extra slim to be on the market? (because they are going to stop the production of PS3 slim) WTF
