New PS3 model pics surface

Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications agency reveals new ridged form factor for third model of PlayStation 3; registers hardware in 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The evidence is mounting that Sony will soon introduce the second major revision to the PlayStation 3 hardware. As reported by Tecnoblog, a Sony filing with Brazilian telecommunications regulator Anatel includes details and pictures of a new PS3.

The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.
The PS3 and Ruffles now have yet another thing in common.

The most prominent changes to the hardware are the system's ridged and uneven top panel and apparent lack of a visible disc-loading slot. That suggests the system will have a disc tray with a flip-top lid (like the original PlayStation hardware or the PlayStation 2 Slim) or a sliding panel. As for the size of the system, it appears modestly smaller than the current iteration of the PS3. The Anatel filing also notes that Sony sought approval for versions of the hardware with three different-size hard drives: 16GB, 250GB, and 500GB.

The new model of the PS3 has been outed before, most concretely through a Sony Federal Communications Commission filing for a CECH-4000 series of the hardware. Additionally, unconfirmed reports had Sony set to announce the new PS3 model at Gamescom 2012 next month. The German industry event also played host to Sony's unveiling of the PS3 Slim in 2009.

Man, and I thought the 'regular' slim model was less than attractive. But this just adds even more fugliness to the picture.....

Damn, I miss my lovely ceramic white 'fat' PS3. (I wouldn't have bought a slim if the situation of my old one YLOD hadn't came along...)

It be lovely if they in fact that would make more sense than making a third version of the ps3 but oh no sadly to say i very much doubt Sony would much rather re-packagw them as cheesy downloads or through collection just to milk that extra bit of money out of you

As long as it's fully BC compatible I'll pick one up; I could care less what it looks like.

wow that thing looks really cheap. well maybe they'll finally get the over priced internet ready blu ray player down to it's more correct price of about 99.00 U.S dollars. That'd be a fair price, seeing how you can get a stand alone blu ray for about 49.00.

Why the hell are they doing this instead of working on releasing a new console.

@cheamo to bring down the cost for PS3. even after PS4 launches there will still be hundreds of thousands of people buying PS3s. PS2 was same way. the slim released just before the PS3 and the PS2 slim continues to sell, to this day, in surprisingly numbers.

Honestly who cares what it looks like I'm still not going to buy one when my original "fat" model is still running strong. Unless they add backwards capability then id be all over it. I'm hoping the picture is deceiving and the thing is a hell of a lot smaller than it looks lol....

My favourite design so far has been the Slim...maybe it's just me... This reminds me a bit too much of the PS2 and the 'old' generation.

By the way, the slim version of ps2 was much better looking than original ps2. Plus it had an extra embedded ethernet card which the original didnt have. Times are really changed, arent they? :)

I dont understand, why ps3 is getting uglier when it gets cheaper. I have a ps3 slim and i though it was ugly (comparing the original ps3) but after see the new one, I started to think mine looks better :) well, these just are empty words. As long as it does the job, its shape isnt important.

Man, that is hideous and will date very quickly. why don't they design it to blend with other audio/video gear most people have next to their TVs?

They should have put 4 GB RAM in a new PS3 model and sell it $100 more. I would easily have pwned Wii U.

@obsequies True. Remember when there was a big fuss because of how big it was and weighed, and the Japanese market basically freaked and thought it was Gojira sitting in their living rooms? Ah, good times.

I dont remember looking at any of my consoles longer than the time it takes to load a game disc. One has to be a serious drama queen to complain about it. Seriously, it does not even look bad. It's not white nor have m&m buttons on it's controller.

is it made of black cardboard? OR maybe those rippled potato chips? Either way it looks ridiculous. What were they thinking? "Surely, consumers will wanna buy a console that looks this ugly."

The 16GB is a typo? It is 160GB as well a 250GB and 500GB. In 2012 there is no way Sony would release a Playstation 3 console with only a 16GB HDD.

This tells me that Sony is desperately trying to boost their hardware sales. I still have my backwards compatible PS3, threw in a 320GB hard drive and haven't had any problems with it. I just hope this new model is worth the resources they burned in designing it. Resources that could have been used in improving the next gen console.

@AceCometh Making new iterations of a console is a good way to make extra money. Sony is not pumping out new Ps3's and then losing money when they do.

The 16gig model is a blatant attempt to offer an extremely cheap version of the console like Microsoft has with their 4gig 360 model.

They got rid of the disc-loading slot and went back to the PS and PS2 models, so it's possible they'll drop the price now to $150-200...I would not even buy that at all. In case if my PS3 Slim breaks, I'll just save my money for PS4 and while every single PS3 games I missed will get cheaper to buy later on. And that 16GB plan...WTF was that Sony? Are you tagging now with Microsoft's 4GB competition? 250GB or 500GB makes sense to offer. Sony, I'll give this nasty finger whoever gave that 16GB idea. Cross our fingers that PS4 will have it's backward compatible with previous PS consoles.

The 16GB hard-drive is quite surprising considering how many games you need to install on the PS3. I have the 250GB slim and I only have around 20GB left largely because of the games that need to install. Also the 16GB will make owning Playstation Plus a pain because you will only be able to download 2 of the 10 games at once. In conclusion, the 16GB is very inconvenient
