New Project From Castlevania Designer Now Most Funded Kickstarter Game Ever

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has the highest total ever on Kickstarter for a video game.

Last month, game designer Koji Igarashi launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new project called Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The game has now become the most funded video game ever on Kickstarter, passing the $4,280,000 mark by the time of this writing. Bloodstained blew through the second highest-funded project, an RPG called Torment: Tides of Numenera which collected a little more than $4,188,000.

No Caption Provided

Bloodstained is a game in the same style as original PlayStation Castlevania titles. A side-scrolling RPG with explorative elements, it is meant to be a spiritual successor to the games that Igarashi helped develop. He is most famous for his work on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which came out in 1997 for the PlayStation.

The campaign began with a relatively modest goal of $500,000, but it quickly gained momentum and exceeded that mark in a single day. Since then, the campaign total has met several stretch goals, allowing the game to include local co-op, a speed run mode, and Vita and Wii U ports, among other features.

There are still 35 hours left in the Kickstarter campaign. The next stretch goal, at $4,500,000, would allow Igarashi and his studio to develop a prequel mini-game.

Bloodstained is planned to launch in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, PC, and Wii U.

I'm really glad this KS has done so well. I admit, the thought of a new "old school" Castlevania game is exciting. Yep, I've been bit by the nostalgia bug alright. ;)

@Navardo95: Yeah, it's just nostalgia. The first stage is denial. We can work through this.

@gaealiege: Thank you...I understand the feeling of nostalgia and I completely love it but at the same time people should actually learn to have a control over nostalgia. I'm not saying throw it in a trash can or something but sometimes people go so fu**ing apeshi*t over it that it kinda pis.ses me off.. Its amazing how the power of nostalgia can push people into a deep dark hole filled with extreme denial and blindness...

Some people should learn to move on and to be frank I'm really uninterested in this project.Seems like a title that is taking full blown advantage of the nostalgia blinded IGA fanbois..

This is awesome.

PLEASE let them reach the stretch goal for the third character. Multiple characters is the best way to add replay value in a game I think (When they pose different playstyles)

@Trev786: on KICKSTARTER. Star Citizen was funded mostly outside Kickstarter. Feel like you should pay more attention to what you read.

@dooples: I thought the same thing, but only part of star citizens funding was via kickstarter.

While they do hold the record for the biggest 'crowdfunded' game, it's not the most via kickstarter.

@relgn: Most of Igarashi's games have been pretty successful since Symphony of the Night. Haven't played any of his games before, but I've heard good things.

Aww 30 hours to go and it looks like they won't reach 5 mil $ for the final goal roguelike dungeon mode, wich in my imagination is something like Bloodborne's chalice.

@cip_raziel: I contributed what I could and coaxed co workers and friends to do the same. O_O when I saw the Rogue Like Dungeon Stretch I was like WHOA. I am thinking that they might get extra funding from investors to actually add in those things as a surprise O_O that is what I hope.

Current AAA Developers: No one wants these types of games!
*camera pans over to kickstarter*
Might No. 9, Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee, etc.

@Thanatos2k: only thing keeping Konami together is the IPs they are holding. other than that, all gamers just hate them lol.

they sure have no idea how to increase the value of the IPs they have, since they try to consume the IPs for one-time profit = failure business. they should shift their business elsewhere. gaming is clearly not their area of expertise.

I hope this wild $$$$ Kickstarter sends a F U message to Konami and the other companies that said NO to Iga for doing this game. Presidents of game studio thinks AAA Castlevnia: Symphony of the Night type game are a dead genre. This prooves there so blinded of what gamers want! Gives a feeling all game studio President dont play videogames!

What I'd like is for this game to hit the $5 million mark. At that mark they will include a roguelike dungeon, and that would be awesome. I don't think it'll hit that with just 33 hours to go, though.

Well I mean yeah, they kind of made a huge gap Wii U and Vita owners to push.

Though Armature Studios, developing those versions will not only do so in Unreal Engine 4, The are giving the code away to developers for free after they are done with the game.

Now, if only we could crowdfund Shogo 2 and TimeSplitters 4... Or at the very least, an FPS that's similar to those two games.

This is awesome. It's a kick in the face to the big wig idiots who thought that gamers were no longer interested in this type of game, as IGA mentioned in the kickstarter announcement.

Can't wait to play this. I wish it were a proper Castlevania game, but if used correctly this enormous amount of funding just might make it out to be better. Regardless, I'll definitely miss Dracula. Let's hope they use this money right.
