New Project From Castlevania Designer Now Most Funded Kickstarter Game Ever

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has the highest total ever on Kickstarter for a video game.

Last month, game designer Koji Igarashi launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new project called Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The game has now become the most funded video game ever on Kickstarter, passing the $4,280,000 mark by the time of this writing. Bloodstained blew through the second highest-funded project, an RPG called Torment: Tides of Numenera which collected a little more than $4,188,000.

Bloodstained is a game in the same style as original PlayStation Castlevania titles. A side-scrolling RPG with explorative elements, it is meant to be a spiritual successor to the games that Igarashi helped develop. He is most famous for his work on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which came out in 1997 for the PlayStation.

The campaign began with a relatively modest goal of $500,000, but it quickly gained momentum and exceeded that mark in a single day. Since then, the campaign total has met several stretch goals, allowing the game to include local co-op, a speed run mode, and Vita and Wii U ports, among other features.

There are still 35 hours left in the Kickstarter campaign. The next stretch goal, at $4,500,000, would allow Igarashi and his studio to develop a prequel mini-game.

Bloodstained is planned to launch in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, PC, and Wii U.

I'm really glad this KS has done so well. I admit, the thought of a new "old school" Castlevania game is exciting. Yep, I've been bit by the nostalgia bug alright. ;)

Oh has the power to make the simplest of things to appear as gold and vice versa..

Avatar image for gaealiege

@Navardo95: Yeah, it's just nostalgia. The first stage is denial. We can work through this.

Avatar image for Navardo95

@gaealiege: Thank you...I understand the feeling of nostalgia and I completely love it but at the same time people should actually learn to have a control over nostalgia. I'm not saying throw it in a trash can or something but sometimes people go so fu**ing apeshi*t over it that it kinda me off.. Its amazing how the power of nostalgia can push people into a deep dark hole filled with extreme denial and blindness...

Some people should learn to move on and to be frank I'm really uninterested in this project.Seems like a title that is taking full blown advantage of the nostalgia blinded IGA fanbois..

This is awesome.

PLEASE let them reach the stretch goal for the third character. Multiple characters is the best way to add replay value in a game I think (When they pose different playstyles)

What are you talking about Gamespot? Star Citizen made like over 50 mil. Feel like this is an article that should be on IGN with all their bulls**t

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@Trev786: on KICKSTARTER. Star Citizen was funded mostly outside Kickstarter. Feel like you should pay more attention to what you read.

Avatar image for dooples

@Trev786: Star Citizens kickstarter campaign was supplemental.

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

@dooples: I thought the same thing, but only part of star citizens funding was via kickstarter.

While they do hold the record for the biggest 'crowdfunded' game, it's not the most via kickstarter.

Make it awesome, Igarashi! :-)

Avatar image for gameroutlawzz

Wow Gamespot truly is a mess now. Also, didnt Star Citizen reach something like 70 millions?

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r

@gameroutlawzz: Via various crowdfunding sources, but not strictly via kickstarter. I wondered that too.

I smell fail.

Nothing will match the awesomeness of symphony of the night

Avatar image for henchman216

@relgn: You're smelling yourself. This is IGA and there is nothing but epic WIN written all over this game!

Avatar image for Navardo95

@henchman216: Lol at people who think everything IGA touches is gold. Not all his games are fine masterpieces or even great games. Many of his other titles outside of SOTN was meh or just a mess..

Avatar image for TehUndeadHorror

@relgn: Most of Igarashi's games have been pretty successful since Symphony of the Night. Haven't played any of his games before, but I've heard good things.

Avatar image for Shouoken4Peace

It's too bad Uwe Boll didn't have Koji on his kickstarter team...

Avatar image for coop36

Dang. Didnt see that coming but good for Iga. Hope the game is fantastic.

Aww 30 hours to go and it looks like they won't reach 5 mil $ for the final goal roguelike dungeon mode, wich in my imagination is something like Bloodborne's chalice.

Avatar image for HiroArka

@cip_raziel: I contributed what I could and coaxed co workers and friends to do the same. O_O when I saw the Rogue Like Dungeon Stretch I was like WHOA. I am thinking that they might get extra funding from investors to actually add in those things as a surprise O_O that is what I hope.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

Konami: This will never sell.

Avatar image for gaealiege

@Thanatos2k: Yeah, I laughed at that.

Current AAA Developers: No one wants these types of games!
*camera pans over to kickstarter*
Might No. 9, Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee, etc.
*camera pans back over to Current AAA Developers*
Current AAA Developers: Yeah....well ....we're right anyway!

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@Thanatos2k: only thing keeping Konami together is the IPs they are holding. other than that, all gamers just hate them lol.

they sure have no idea how to increase the value of the IPs they have, since they try to consume the IPs for one-time profit = failure business. they should shift their business elsewhere. gaming is clearly not their area of expertise.

cool i love castlevania games so this should be awesome kick starter is one of the best things to happen to gaming in a long time

that said is there a way to remove this annoying bar at the bottom of the screen and what the hell are they doing to this site i smell another mass exodus in the making

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@suppaphly42: exactly. this is my first Kickstarter participation, and i have thrown more money into this than i ever imagined i would spend on one game... lol

Avatar image for Charlie_1979

I hope this wild $$$$ Kickstarter sends a F U message to Konami and the other companies that said NO to Iga for doing this game. Presidents of game studio thinks AAA Castlevnia: Symphony of the Night type game are a dead genre. This prooves there so blinded of what gamers want! Gives a feeling all game studio President dont play videogames!

Avatar image for FLEEBS

What I'd like is for this game to hit the $5 million mark. At that mark they will include a roguelike dungeon, and that would be awesome. I don't think it'll hit that with just 33 hours to go, though.

Avatar image for really_tho_bruh

Well I mean yeah, they kind of made a huge gap Wii U and Vita owners to push.

Though Armature Studios, developing those versions will not only do so in Unreal Engine 4, The are giving the code away to developers for free after they are done with the game.

Avatar image for Michformer

Now, if only we could crowdfund Shogo 2 and TimeSplitters 4... Or at the very least, an FPS that's similar to those two games.

Avatar image for FLEEBS

This is awesome. It's a kick in the face to the big wig idiots who thought that gamers were no longer interested in this type of game, as IGA mentioned in the kickstarter announcement.

Can't wait to play this. I wish it were a proper Castlevania game, but if used correctly this enormous amount of funding just might make it out to be better. Regardless, I'll definitely miss Dracula. Let's hope they use this money right.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@FLEEBS: yeah, I like to rub this in the face of trend suckers that jump from CoD to MOBAs telling me "this is the best right now". Vote with you wallet, fellow gamers, you have the power to sabe this hobbie... remember Mattrick?

Avatar image for gaealiege

@santinegrete: Fad gamers are destroying this industry. You've hit the nail right on the head.

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@santinegrete: hey man... i love MOBAs (well, only Dota), but i definetly want other games too. especially this one, since SotN is my personal all time favourite game.

new comments section blows... on the other hand; just give us Darksiders 3!!

Avatar image for Barighm

@robbiejones: What's Darksiders 3 have to do with this?

Avatar image for robbiejones

@Barighm: Doh!! haven't been on the gamespot webpage in ages.. didn't know there were many articles (including) comments on 1 page!! was meant to obviously comment on the "death-finitive version" of darksiders 2 article... hehe

Avatar image for uninspiredcup

Now, lets see them immediately get a publisher and implement seedy DLC you would get from any major publisher.

Avatar image for IanNottinghamX

it better blow me away. Im talking 2.5d environments, hand drawn disney quality animations(or anime feature quality), online play etc. It better have all of that shit for the money it got is all I have to say.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@IanNottinghamX: That would cost a lot more than 5 million dollars. Go ask Vanillaware how much those graphics cost.

Avatar image for Barighm

@IanNottinghamX: Wow. Some people...

The fact it's happening at all is good enough for me. I'll demand more from the sequel.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

I thought Chris Taylor's space game was nearing $70M at this point.... Was that not on Kickstarter?

Avatar image for StHapns247

@Pyrosa: It was originally on Kickstarter and made about $2 million. Since then they have crowdfunded on their own and made $80 million.

Chris Roberts, btw.

Avatar image for newhaus1994

@Pyrosa: Star Citizen? All that money's been raised through an indefinite crowdfunding campaign elsewhere. Not on Kickstarter.

Avatar image for LpcWarrior

@Pyrosa: I was going to post the same thing.
