Now Playing: A Way Out Escaping Prison Cooperatively

A Way Out, the new co-op game from the creator of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, launches this week on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. We caught up with game director Josef Fares recently, who gave us a demo and revealed some new details about the action game. Fares made headlines at the end of 2017 when he said "F**k the Oscars" and gave the middle finger directly to the camera during The Game Awards.

You can check out our complete, 35-minute demo in the video below, and we've pulled out some interesting takeaways into the bullet points at the bottom of this post. You can also check out our livestream with the opening hours above.

A Way Out can only be played in co-op with another human, locally or online. Thankfully, there is a way to pretty much ensure you have someone to play with. At The Game Awards back in December, publisher EA announced a "friends pass free trial" for the game that lets you play the full title if your friend owns it.

Set in the '70s, A Way Out focuses on the story of two convicts who are on the run after a prison escape. The game launches on March 23; you can read more about it in our A Way Out review.

A Way Out Details From Fares

  • It will take you 6-8 hours to finish A Way Out
  • Developer Hazelight started with just 10 people on the project, before ramping up to around 40 later in development. Only 12 people worked on Brothers.
  • Fares wrote the script himself, though he worked with a "script doctor" as well.
  • Fares says EA has been very supportive and hands-off. "If EA wants to make an apple greener, I can say no," Fares said.
  • 100 percent of the income from A Way Out will go to developer Hazelight. EA makes nothing, Fares said. EA helps with marketing and support, but apparently gets nothing from sales.
  • He acknowledges that EA has its fair share of issues, as all publishers do. "They sh*t and take a pee like everybody else," Fares said.
  • Fares is incredibly passionate about A Way Out and particularly its co-op multiplayer, saying he would turn down $10 million to make a strictly single-player game.
  • Fares would never make a game with mictrotransactions.
  • There are no plans for a Nintendo Switch edition, at least not yet.

The one prisoner looks like a young Sean Penn.

This director makes me cringe but hopefully the game is good.

Upvote for his dev ethos and exellently blunt communications... Still not seeing the joy in playing a prison game, but I would WRECK some MP Connect Four! ;)

ea is doing this friend pass thing? so is this their response to sony's shareplay except as usual they want money for it

@shadowwarrior4: Do we know if its like shareplay where you need a great connection? Or can my friend download the full game but like a "friend" edition where he can't play it unless he connects to the friend. Shareplay does not work well at all, so hope its the latter.

This looks very interesting, and could be great if done well - but I'm strictly an SP player now so I'll give this a miss. If they could find a way to somehow enable you to play both characters, and flick between them like Army of 2 did then I'd take a look, but I'll leave this for the time being.

But a thumbs up to Hazelight for at least trying something new - I hope this does really well.

@mpl911: I tried to do the Army of Two SP style, but scenes like B2B just didn't play well so I put it back down. Couldn't convince any of the crew to try it that year, so it just sits in the library.

@mpl911: I know SP games are great but you dont have a friend that would like to play it with you? Army of Two was more enjoyable with a friend on couch co-op too ;)

@czlapaj2: I'm a bit older than most and the majority of my mates don't game. My only real gamer mate plays on pc, so unless they do xbox / windows cross-platform on this one, I'll be out of luck.

Before release-

Josef Fares: "100 percent of the income from A Way Out will go to developer Hazelight. EA makes nothing, Fares said. EA helps with marketing and support, but apparently gets nothing from sales."

A month later after release-

Josef Fares kicked out of the office...

@skittymiao: I think what he means is his marketing and distro budget is paid to them as a normal vendor relationship.

EA won’t even give you an ingame upgrade worth 10 cents for free. I extremely doubt EA is doing marketing and support for free.

@wexoriaim talking facts. The fact that nobody cares about splitscreen on a pc.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@newbpwnr: Yeah; for all the couch co-op that gets played in my house, and even multi-screen Co-Op, literally none of it is on PC. PC is used just by me. All Co-Op is done on Xbones, PS4s, PS3s, and rarely X360 (one in the garage for rainy days when we still want to be outside but can't bike or walk).

...and NES + SNES Classic in the kids' playroom, now that I think of it. O.Gs. of couch co-op, reborn.

Managed to organise with a friend online so we can play through it on launch day with the bonus free copy. Hopefully it sells well.

Avatar image for rbrettj

@gamingdevil800: If you really like it, then it might be worth your time to support the developer by either you or your friend purchasing the other copy of the game to help it sell well.

Sounds like a great game and I would have loved to play it but i don’t spend money that requires another player.
