New Pokemon Sun/Moon Trailer Turns Exeggutor Into a Giraffe-Necked Monster

It already looked like a palm or coconut tree, so why not.

Now Playing: Pokemon Sun/Moon - Alola Forms Trailer

As promised, a new wave of Pokemon Sun and Moon announcements have been made today by way of a trailer revealing new versions of existing Pokemon, brand-new Pokemon, and more.

Among Sun/Moon's new features are Alola Forms, which provide a new look and type for existing Pokemon. (Alola is the game's new region.) Most striking of these is Exeggutor's--the formerly plump coconut tree-looking creature has grown a giraffe-sized neck, and judging by some of its faces, it's psyched about that.

Exeggutor is prepared to demolish adorable creatures for your monetary gain

It's also now a Grass/Dragon-type, as opposed to a Grass/Psychic-type as in the past. Other Alola Forms shown off include Vulpix (Ice), Ninetales (Ice/Fairy), Sandshrew (Ice/Steel), and Sandslash (Ice/Steel)

The video goes on to provide a look at some other new Pokemon, such as Minior, a floating rock that can shed its outer shell, and Gumshoos, which sports a Donald Trump-esque hairdo. The many styles of Oricorio are also shown, including one that makes it look like a cheerleader (appropriately called the Pom-Pom style). Each of Alola's different islands has a different style that calls it home.

Later in the video we see Mudbray, a Ground type, and two new Grass types: Fomantis and its evolved form, Lurantis. The latter brings with it a new move, Solar Blade.

Other new features on display are the ability to ride Pokemon and something called Z-Moves, which are described as a new way to attack. Each type has its own spectacular-looking Z-Move, which can only be used once per battle.

Pokemon Sun and Moon are set for release on November 18 on 3DS.

Is the Exeggutor form a third evolution or just a new form?

What a bunch of genwunners in the comments. All hating because pokemon is making changes to the formula. Yes every single gen will have good and bad pokemon designs, so what. There are more than 700 pokemon out there and non of you could make more than 5 good ones.

I love the look of those changes so far let's see what the result will be. Love the changes to the old pokemon and love most of the new ones.

GF makes changes: They are running out of ideas
They do not make changes: pokemon is stalling and... they ran out of ideas

They always lose with you people. And fun fact most haters of the changes didn't play a pokemon game ever since gen 1 or 2 and they will not buy the game ever again no matter what GF does

Dev: Sir, we've run out of ideas for pokemon after the horse with dreadlocks and bus pokemon...

Director: Hm.... Stretch out the Eggecutor's neck and then make the fire types have an ice version!

Dev: But sir, that doesn't make sense. Our setting is based on Hawaii. It's a tropical setting Icy versions don't make sen-

Director: DO IT!

What I love is it never gets old, they always dream up something fantastic, and I can't wait. I've bought every pokemon since they started making them, and it's still fun, great and I so can't wait!

Interesting... so instead of being on a quest to mostly just get some badges so you're allowed to challenge the region's best, and tripping into a random adventure along the way (That you almost never are really an active participant in), it seems more like you're simply already just a young adventurer delving into the secrets of these secluded islands where Pokemon have evolved in strange specialized ways from their mainland brethren (Like what happens with real species bound for enough generations on small islands). It seems almost like some of the movies for the series to me.

It might be more interesting if they let the main character be a trainer from one of the previous games exploring a new place. Might have to maneuver the plot so that you're cut off from your previous collection and abilities (Think... Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or something). It's a cliché for sure, but it's an initial premise that I'm somewhat fond of. It would help to explain why other trainers and natives might look to you to solve a problem. You'd be a more experienced trainer, just out of your element. I'm sure it's not going to be as cool as this concept could have been, but it looks somewhat promising nonetheless.

I think the idea of region variant Pokemon (which isn't an entirely new concept) is brilliant and is completely in line with one of the series' hallmarks: evolution and.evolving your Pokemon.

And adding mechanics like Z-Moves is ultimately something optional that you can choose to ignore

Pokemon is the same game over and over! I don't get why anyone would keep paying money to--

...Oh my God, is that an ice sandshrew?

I'll finish this later, I have to go... preorder... a thing...

Alola forms? Makes sense, plus the new forms look interesting. Hope they expand on this concept further.

No GYM leaders? Good, glad they changed that. It was stupid how every region in the world follows the exact same structure. Now, I may actually not hate playing the single-player side of the game. Also ditch the Rocket clones (Evil Team). You can have villains, I'm just bored if the cliche gangsta mobs.

Z-Moves? . . . Hmm, while I like the idea of a one chance 5th move, is this a good alternative to Mega Evolution? Hope they let you switch this out for the Mega ring/ stones.

Overall was a good trailer and has me excited since jumping into the series at X. It's looking like it'll have more depth and strategy which is what a good RPG makes. Seriously, a lot of these negative posts seem to be from nostalgic fools, and haters. Give it a chance, and embrace change.

I like that pokemon is at least attempting to do something new and different. People complain that pokemon is all the same but the moment they change things people are complaining that they are ruining the franchise. The only thing I do not like so far is the Aloha forms where typing is changed. They could have easily just made an ice fox. Changing appearances is fine but changing complete typing is a no.

Avatar image for deactivated-58183aaaa31d8

@dcoutten: Then they should try making GOOD changes.

Shoe horning in crappy Pokemon that look like the product of an ink blot test, taken by someone on acid after they have been kicked in the face, is not what Pokemon needs.

Neither do adding stupid mechanics that don't make sense to any of the lore or game mechanics that came before.

I personally would love to see a mature take on the franchise. Perhaps take it from the handheld and give it a console overhaul. Make the graphics better, RPG mechanics better and overall world/character design better.

Playing a Pokemon game that played more like the anime series and had combat closer to the show battle arenas would sell consoles like someone handing out free weed.

But as we know Nintendo actively prevents itself from selling consoles with its reluctance to change ANYTHING.

@dexda: are you nuts? They tried it years ago on the GameCube, the games sucked, and are the only pokemon games I never touch. I absolutely loved x and y, sapphire and ruby, and I've seen them all. It doesn't work in anime and I for one think they have the formula. If people want a different game, go buy it.

Avatar image for deactivated-58183aaaa31d8

@pigpen238908: Well yeah obviously the results won't be that successful on Gamecube. For one the console sold like shit and consoles didn't have the power for massive scale RPGs at that time. Even Final Fantasy had very bland overworlds and scenery in the PS2/Gamecube generation.

You imagine what they could do with PS4/Xbox One power though now? An open world RPG, in either third or first person, with stylised graphics, actual characters, cities and pokemon that populate the world rather than being randomly generated.

If they worked towards even half of what I just listed it would be infinitely better than continuing to churn out these shitty ass new Pokemon.

It's actually embarrassing what they pass for Pokemon now. Basically whatever they manage to squeeze out of their ass goes.

Avatar image for dcoutten

@dexda: Lol. The beginning of this comment legitly made me laugh.

Im tired of the same Pokemon and think its sad that if you play one game you essentially played them all. I been saying that Pokemon designs are starting to look more "digimon like". Where many look too cartoony or humanoid but that started all in Gen 5.

Though I may not care for open world games Pokemon would be a great fit for one, especially a real time action open game. I don't know which mechanic you are talking about but the Z special move seems more balanced than megas and possible be available to every single Mon so I see no problem with that.

Riding on Pokemon has always been cool and been in the anime. So I'm glad that there are at least more to choose from. Some folks have speculated that there will be no HMs because of that. HMs have been one of the dumbest things in Pokemon and no one likes them so that would be great if true.

It took Pokemon 6 generations to give us the option for character customization. X/Y, though was super easy, was so much better in just improving things and making Pokemon current. I'm a "Gen-oner" but I been playing the same game so much that I'm intrigued by any changes at this point.

@Shadowmax889: The trailer shown was utter garbage. Changning classic Pokemon's types is flat out stupid, dancing Pokemon is super cringey, and the new Pokemon all look generic/dumb. This game will not be the slightest bit good, especially compared to the classics.

Holy crap exeggutor what have they done to you...

On a serious note, it seems they are really running out of ideas and I get that they need to introduce new things to keep the franchise fresh, but they are twisting mechanics here to the point that it makes no sense. Z-powers, Mega-Evolutions and even complete change in typing/appearance? The franchise is losing its grip and ease of its own basic mechanics.
