Liam Robertson and Emily Rogers--both who are contributors to Nintendo Life and have a track record of correctly reporting unannounced Nintendo projects--have said the game will be announced later this year. The information is based on "five different sources," though these sources were unnamed and it is not clear whether they are from within Nintendo.

The game is reportedly currently "being localised and tested," which could mean that it will be announced fairly soon and may even be released relatively quickly after its announcement--should the report bear out to be true.

Nintendo has not yet officially confirmed a Paper Mario game is in development for Wii U.

The Paper Mario series debuted for the Nintendo 64. A new entry in the series has been released for every Nintendo home console since, with the Wii U being the current exception.

The last Paper Mario game to be released was Paper Mario: Sticker Star for the Nintendo 3DS. Characters from the Paper Marioverse recently appeared in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

Intelligent Systems, the studio behind the Paper Mario series, also recently finished work on Fire Emblem Fates, the follow-up to critically acclaimed 3DS strategy title Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Unlike previous entries in the series, Fates splits the game's story between two games, with Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest exploring two sides of the tale. Fire Emblem Fates will launch in North America on February 19.

    Nintendo will probably call it "New Paper Mario" too.

    Hopefully Miyamoto won't ruin this one with his heavy handedness like Sticker Star.

    @nicemouse:
    Nintendo doesn't make Paper Mario.

    I suspect that Intelligent systems no longer employs a lot of the people who made the first games truly great.

    Avatar image for nicemouse

    @donderpants: Miyamoto went to Intelligent Systems and ordered them to remove the story, battle system, companions and especially prohibited them from creating any characters of their own only allowing them to use characters Miyamoto created himself.

    Every time I see a new Paper Mario coming out I wonder how badly they can mess it up this time. Just watch them make this one a shallow shameless Amiibo selling vehicle like Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival.

    Paper Mario?? was that ever a good game? Happily, I sold my wiiu yesterday for 400$. the only downside is I'll be missing this new Zelda game that will be released in 2020.

    Glad to hear you made a lot of money off the sale. Although I personally think Wii U has been well and truly worthwhile, glad to hear you made a good sale for it.

    It was great for TTYD. Haven't tried Sticker Star or the original (although they do look okay- not terrific, but still pretty decent.)
    Super Paper Mario had rubbish combat, but was a good game overall.

    @xolivierx: Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door was amazing beyond all reason, all the others in the series were surprisingly crap.

    @dramaticlookguy: This makes me wonder if you actually played the other games. Yes, Sticker Star was bad, and SPM was mediocre, but the original Paper Mario was amazing. It has just as much charm and diversity with the characters and environments as TTYD, and the gameplay isn't far behind either. I honestly can't imagine how someone who liked TTYD could hate the original.

    @laladidoa: Whoa there, little camper, I never said I hated the first paper mario. I did hate sticker stars and SPM? I don't know, I just can't get through it; tried several time and I just can't stay with it. But as for the original, well I got it off the virtual console recently and it wasn't as good as I remembered. Kind of lack luster, really. I think it was a great building point, much like assassin's creed 1 was for 2, but if I'm going to suggest a game to someone, I'd want to lead with my best foot forward, and that's Thousand Year Door.

    @xolivierx: How did you sell it for more than the retail price?????

    And yeah, I kinda question whether or not this Zelda game even exists.

    Avatar image for xolivierx

    @nicemouse : i sold it with 3 wiiu games, 1 wii game, controller etc... good riddance!!!!!! haha

    @xolivierx: With games, I wasn't thinking.

    Nintendo's biggest problem is that they're so unwilling to invest in larger game projects anymore.

    Frustrating considering they made such huge profits off the Wii, but they suffered losses three years in a row as a result of their corner cutting and extreme play-it-safe measures.

    Yes return the series back to console (it should never made it to handheld in the first place, that's what the Mario & Luigi series were for) and as the way it should had been like the first two games (original and the Thousand-Year Door).

    I'd love to see another Paper Mario game but I really wish they'd make it for the 3DS instead of the WiiU. That system is all but dead, and I'd hate to see another great game get criminally low sales just because it's on an unwanted system :( Nothing against the Wii U itself, but the sales are horrid, and I'm not about to buy one for Pikmin 3 and another Paper Mario... as much as I'd like to!

    Avatar image for donderpants

    @nl_skipper:

    There are a LOT more worthwhile games than that on Wii U. 3DS is really designed to make Nintendo money. Wii U is where their truly good games are. The Paper Mario series has faltered massively in popularity on handhelds, and the system generally has mainly downgraded versions of the big Wii U titles. I appreciate it for earning Nintendo the money it needs- and It's probably worthwhile, for a few excellent titles. But in no way is it better than Wii U.

    Avatar image for leeko_link
    leeko_link

    @nl_skipper: What an idiotic statement. You buy games based on sales and popularity, what you failed to realize is that a console, popular or not, had its own variety of gems and must-buys and sales meant nothing if the games are great. There's a difference between a quality must buy and a cash cow. You seem like cash cow are your only option which is sad cause the games on Wii U are great.

    I just started playing Paper Mario (N64) on the Wii U VC on Saturday. It made me realize what I had been missing. The only other Paper Mario I had played before was Super Paper Mario on the Wii, which was really a platformer.

    @elheber: It's such an awesome game, still one of my favorites/most memorable games. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for Gamecube is also awesome, might even be better than the original, but I haven't played it enough to really make that call.

    i just hope it knows what it wants to be this time. sticker star was just short of being a great game, but it tried too many different things at once (most of them questionable choices at best), the combat was dull and the bosses were solved through foresight and gimmicks, not to mention the writing, which is actually one of the high points of mario RPGs, was pretty weak.

    I'd be fine with the other ones- but it would be so, so awesome if they had a TTYD quality game. That was the best game that gen, and fourth best of all time.

    If they added that, Wii U would go from being very worthwhile, to having the question of it's worth be redundant. As it is, I'd say I'd have paid for it unless it was, maybe 250 dollars more expensive. If it had a Paper Mario of TTYD quality, that would raise to 320 or so.

    For some reason the title made me think of Paperboy.

    I enjoyed the heck out of that game.

    The characters and settings in the first 2 Paper Mario games were wonderful. If they manage to bring that magic back I'll be delighted. Plus that how about letting a Toad in the party? Its always a goomba or a koopa. Lets have a Battle Toad in there!

    Oh please no. I'm fine with the first two, since Paper Mario is good enough that even if it's not done properly, it's still most likely going to be fun. But Amiibo? No. Not for Disney, not for Skylander's, and not even for Nintendo- I will not buy expensive chunks of plastic to add to the gameplay minutely.

    I agree, but it's not under Nintendo's control. Intelligent Systems makes the Paper Mario series. Take it up with them. In fact, you have a better shot with them- I know for a fact that Nintendo isn't open to suggestions, but Intelligent Systems might be.
