New Overwatch Event Begins Next Week; Limited Edition Skins Leaked [UPDATE]

"Good luck and great fortune await!"

[UPDATE] Blizzard is yet to confirm what exactly is included in Overwatch's Chinese New Year Event, but a new leaked image suggests a number of characters may get new, limited edition skins.

The supposed leak comes via Reddit user hythl0day, and it shows off what look to be new outfits for Winston, Reinhardt, Zenyatta, and Roadhog. They're apparently dressed as characters from the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West. So Winston is the monkey king Sun Wukong, Roadhog is his pig monster apprentice, Reinhart the river monster apprentice, and Zenyatta is Sun Wukong's Buddhism master. It's currently unclear what tier these costumes will be part of.

The only other detail tidbit in the image was that the event may run from January 24 for one week, says hythl0day.

The original story is below.

The next Overwatch in-game event has been announced.

Blizzard announced today that a Year of the Rooster event will begin on January 24. This was revealed in a video posted on Twitter with the caption, "Good luck and great fortune await!"

There is no word just yet on what's included with the new Overwatch event. But the teaser video shows that Mei appears to be getting a new skin.

D.Va is also apparently getting a new skin for the event, if the teaser below from Overwatch's Korean account is anything to go on.

A Blizzard spokesperson told Polygon that the Overwatch Year of the Rooster event is going to be similar to past events, like those themed around Halloween and Christmas, in terms of scope.

Year of the Rooster may not be Overwatch's only new event coming in the next month, as a leak pointed to the possibility of Valentine's Day event for February...maybe.

DO NOT PAY FOR LOOTBOXES

if you ever want a fair system where you can say pay $5 for a skin of your choice instead of being forced to gamble and likely spend $100+ to get the one skin you want....you need to take a stand and boycott the events....even if it means skipping out on a skin youd have otherwise liked.

@Kezzy123: Yeah... good luck with the boycotting thing. It sounds nice, and I don't agree to how blizzard is doing it. But do you seriously think they are gonna change the way they are doing things when you take into consideration how many people are still willing to cough up the dough to get a chance at instant gratification?

@Kezzy123: I never pay for lootboxes, I just save up my credits before holiday dates and then play Arcades and grind levels like mad during the event to get more event lootboxes. Afterwards I spend my credits saving to buy the rest of the limited stuff a couple of hours before the event is over. I usually could manage to get most if not all of the limited skins and other stuff.

Mind you though, I have a 8-5 job, so I usually only grind from 6-11pm/3-5 days a week. People with more free time could manage much more!

Conclusion: unless you are a super lazy/unlucky person, getting the event stuff shouldn't be too hard and doesn't require you to pay for lootboxes.

@Kezzy123:

Yep, I don't pay for lootboxes anymore. Spent 20$, received 24 lootboxes. All of them (every one!) was filled with three silvers and one blue.

It isn't gambling because "you always win something", but the probability is still a sham sometimes. I just earn them and, if I don't get what I want, I use the in game currency to buy what I do want.

@doctor_mg: Well the blue boxes are literally worth nothing. Its just there as no value items to generate rarity illusion for the rarer skins. The gambling part is obvious...buy $20 worth of boxes...get nothing...figure ok ill get a legendary on the next set of $20 for sure...buy more..then get one but wrong one...duplicate or not even event related...now you feel like you spent $40 and didnt get anything to show for it so buy more then more.....typical casino gambling problem issue and I have seen tons of people fall to it. its a disgusting system preying on people with gambling addiction mostly.

@doctor_mg: When its dice rolls with dice rolls I would personally call it a gamble. Do it multiple times and I'd call it gambling lol

@killerious: Well... with any multiplayer games it'll always gonna be the same stuff. Having skins or unlocks give non-competitive players a reason to continue playing or return to the game after taking a break. Different strokes for different folks, cosmetics just don't appeal to you.

@BoxOfPocky: Sorry, but it sound so ridiculous that people care about that. Are they trying to impress me in the game, because I am not impressed.

@killerious: They don't need to impress everyone, just enough to allow them to make bank. Based on how many games does it, it seems to appeal enough people for those games to put em in.

Fantastic-looking skins. Need that New Year Mech for D.Va. :)

I hope there's a cool PvE Mode for this Lunar New Year's event as well (like Junkenstein's Revenge during Halloween).

@lionheartssj1:If you are on PC, Firstly, sit in a good position where your arms can freely move your mouse. Don't pivot on your wrist, it limits your mouse movement and tracking significantly. If you are a high sensitivity player, I would recommend lower your mouse sensitivity gradually because lower sensitivity give you a better accuracy.

For reference, I used to play with 16 in-game sensitivity on 500dpi mouse with pivot on my wrist, now I only use 8 in-game sensitivity on 500dpi mouse with my arms moving freely, other people prefer lower sensitivity still, pro players even use much lower sensitivity which you can check here http://on-winning.com/overwatch-pro-sensitivity-settings-setups-monitor-mouse-keyboard-headset/

Next, I would recommend you getting a 120Hz/144Hz/240Hz monitor and using the lowest in-game graphic settings but try to leave the rendering at 100% if you can afford it and FXAA on to get the smoothest motion possible and to squeeze out more frame-per-second (FPS) which in turn will help you track your enemies MUCH easier. Trust me, a smooth motion vs. choppy motion affect your aiming and tracking A LOT, also, it won't make your Overwatch look hideous, I couldn't even tell the difference when playing unless I pay an extra attention to the graphic details.

A lot of people prefer the highest FPS possible (200-400++ FPS), I personally prefer this http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=668808553 because it eliminates screen tearing/stuttering resulting in consistent tracking. Both requires decent GPU. I only use i7-2xxx and Nvidia GTX 670 and I could still manage both settings.

Warm up before you play competitive matches both physically, especially your hands/arms, and virtually in training grounds or quickplay/arcades to get your gaming sense on. Also, a good nap/sleep/a-can-of-monster-drink-if-you-prefer before playing is also recommended, I always have hard time concentrating on my matches when I feel tired.

Lastly, just keep playing and enjoy the game. Learn positioning, your role in team, timing, etc. while you are at it and you should be able to get SR of 3000 at the VERY LEAST if you've done all the above.

All of the above requires dedication and time to get used to so be very patient and within a few days or weeks you should be performing better.

Oh, If you are on console, well... I'm honestly not sure how :)

Something tells me that this update is going to offend certain people on behalf of those in a certain ethnic group/nationality who most likely won't be offended themselves.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Well, since it's really just Blizzard catering to the - very important - Asian market, I doubt they care about any complaints from "the West".
