The New Nintendo 3DS XL will ship in North America and across Europe on February 13, Nintendo announced on Wednesday.

Nintendo's enhanced handheld is available at $200 in the US in either black or red, while two special editions have also been announced.

However, there appears to be no existing plan to release the regular-sized, non-XL systems in North America. These smaller models, which come with the same hardware spec, are unique insofar as they support custom faceplates. Back in October, these smaller versions shipped alongside the New Nintendo 3DS XL in Japan, but Nintendo has not mentioned any plan to launch them in the US.

Europe will be getting the regular sized models, along with 12 custom face plates also available at launch. In the UK, the regular model will be available in black or white, while the XL comes in black or blue.

Meanwhile, two special launch units have been revealed for both North America and Europe. A Majora's Mask edition, which you can see in the video above, comes with the 3D reboot of the N64 classic pre-installed.

However, in the US the game will not come pre-installed.. Along with this, Nintendo also announced a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Edition that will come packaged with the game.

The New Nintendo 3DS comes with various hardware improvements over the original model, which first launched in March 2011. It features a small C-Stick next to its face buttons, which effectively works as a second analog stick.

Also added in are two new shoulder buttons--ZL and ZR--along with what Nintendo is calling "Super-Stable 3D," which will broaden the viewing field of the stereoscopic 3D.

Upgraded hardware will allow the system to run faster, while the in-built NFC technology will enable the use of Nintendo's amiibo figurines.

These systems will not come bundled with an AC adapter.

I wonder why they didn't release the metallic blue version stateside? I definitely would have chosen that one, but now I'm still locked in debate between the black and red ones. Hmmmm....

Looking for a bit of advice from owners of the current 3DS regular & XL. I can get the regular size / current version of the DS system with 50% off and a game included which can either be Mario Kart 7 or New Super Mario Brothers 2. Would it be worth picking one of these up, or will the new system really be a big step up? I see that new 3ds has head tracking for the 3d feature and that the controls have apparently been improved with the inclusion of the C stick. Was the 3d feature really bad on the current version? and am I right in thinking that I need an add-on to add the C stick functionality?

I'm not planning on making the system something that I play on 24/7, just more when I have to go away on trips and have a rest when working at my desk, but I don't want to end up spending the money on a system that is going to be completely obsolete, when I could put that towards a new one if it is going to be that much better?

Thanks for any help that people can offer on this.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I would put the money toward the new one. It has a lot of new features and is much more future proof, however the original XL is a nice system. Maybe you should compare the two in-store when the new one comes out.

Thanks for the reply << LINK REMOVED >> My initial reaction is to go for the new hardware, for the very reason that you said with future proofing, but I have had handhelds in the past and ended up not playing them loads. I am a little concerned that I will do the same with the 3DS, so that is why I have been very tempted by the current version.

Have you played the regular size and the XL?

Thanks again

@mangera33 Yes I have Tried both. I liked them both for different reasons. The XL having much better battery life and better 3d viewing angles. However, the native screen on the original might be preferred, as with the portability. I also liked the feel of the face buttons on the original better.

To all the North American customers that are bummed about the exclusion of the smaller n3DS:

Over on NeoGaf and Reddit we have a campaign going to help other like-minded individuals express their disappointment to Nintendo (in a constructive and professional manner, of course).

We have been calling Nintendo's Customer Service ( 1-800-255-3700 ) to leave feedback or emailing the company at nintendo@noa.nintendo.com.

I have both emailed and made a phone call and the service rep I spoke to says they have in fact gotten a LOT of calls and emails regarding the matter and the response has surprised them. He also said that the smaller model will come to North America, but plans are not concrete at the moment. He informed me that Nintendo takes all feedback into serious consideration.

So please, if you wish to let Nintendo know your thoughts, hit them up. Every voice heard is important if we wish to convince Nintendo that there is, in fact, a market for the smaller model. The market may be smaller than the XL owners, but the market is there nonetheless.

While I agree that fair treatment should've been given to both models of the system regarding the faceplates, given the design is already set in stone, that would require a complete redsigning of the XL at this point....

Fun thing. Gamestop requires you give up your charger from your previous system. So if you have 2 chargers... great. If you have one. hahahahaha... 200 dollars.

Hmm. The way I see it, I own 2 chargers so I'm not annoyed much at the fact that there isn't a charger bundled with the "New 3DS". Although, Nintendo would have made a smarter move if they had included one.

A good place to complain would be, << LINK REMOVED >> if enough people tell them we want chargers and the standard N3DS they may listen.

This annoys me because I really wanted smaller one with the faceplates. It's so much better looking than the XL and it still has a damn good screen increase from the original one.

This is good or bad depending on the screen for me, I had a regular 3ds and loved it, I traded it in for the XL when it was first released and I was so disappointed on how washed out the screen was because it is not displaying in a native format.

It's like buying a 1080p native monitor and up scaling 720p games.

If the screen on the New XL is better quality, like having a larger screen with native support I'll consider it.

"Native" resolution means resolution of the display panel. Both the 3DS and 3DS XL have the exact same resolution, because the resolution is fixed regardless of display size. It's no different than a 32" 1080p TV versus a 60" 1080p TV. The 60" screen looks more pixelated because the screen (and therefore the individual pixels) is larger.

Who makes these braindead decisions at Nintendo? Hey we have a 3ds that can make additional revenue with faceplate sales, should we bring that to the US? Nah, just send them the XL version, we don't want to cannibalize the sales of the dozen special edition old 3ds units we rushed out like idiots.

Nintendo - rocketing their way to irrelevance in the West. I know they're a Japanese company, but that's too niche for my taste.

My WiiU has been idle for weeks and the last portable I cared about was a DS.

I'm done. Go 3rd party or don't expect my money ever again.
