Now Playing: Need For Speed: Payback - Announcement Trailer

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

After sharing the first details about it last month, EA today officially announced Need for Speed: Payback, the newest entry in its long-running racing series. Need for Speed: Payback is due out on November 10 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

According to EA, it will have "intense heist missions, high stakes car battles, epic cop pursuits, and jaw dropping set pieces." The game is set in the fictional world of Fortune Valley, and you will drive as three different characters: Tyler, Mac, and Jess. In what EA and developer Ghost Games are calling a "gripping story of betrayal and revenge," players will try to take down an evil cartel that controls the city's underworld known as The House. Check out the trailer above.

"Players will take on the roles of three distinct playable characters reunited by a quest for vengeance against The House, a nefarious cartel that rules the city’s casinos, criminals and cops," it explained in a press release. "Each driver must take on races, missions and challenges to earn the respect of the Valley’s underground and enter the ultimate race to take down The House."

Car customisation is a big part of Payback, as EA claims the game has the "deepest" customisation ever in the series. Additionally, the press release mentions a betting system where players can wager funds on their performance and receive a nice payday--or lose it all.

People who pre-order Payback will get the Platinum Car Pack and access to five cars at launch, each of which is outfitted with "Platinum Blue Tire" smoke. The five cars are:

  • Nissan 350Z 2008
  • Chevrolet Camaro SS 1967
  • Dodge Charger R/T 1969
  • Ford F-150 Raptor 2016
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 2016

A Deluxe Edition, meanwhile, includes the Platinum Car Pack and other bonuses such as more customisation items (including a license plate and NOS colour), as well as in-game discounts and XP bonuses. Additionally, this version of the game unlocks three days early, starting on November 7.

If you're an EA/Origin Access subscriber, you can play Payback for 10 hours starting on November 2. Members save 10 percent on the game, bringing the price down to $54.

Unlike the 2015 reboot, Need for Speed: Payback does not require a constant internet connection. More details and footage of the racing game are expected to be divulged during EA's E3 events later this month.

Not impressed at all, the times have changed and there is little they haven't done with the franchise, you can't recuperate that old feeling we all had when kids the feeling Underground 1 & 2 and Most Wanted gave us. Its time they either turn the franchise on its head or just bury it for a few years.

@404FredNotFound: You just got old and bitchy. the NFS games are good and this one looks to be great

@404FredNotFound: Oh wow you must be young. Underground isn't that old to me lol. I remember the feeling of playing NFS on the PS1. Those were the days....

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@NiteX: I was thinking the same thing. I got a PS1 in '97 and my first NFS was simply titled "II." To me, NFS stopped being NFS when Underground released. From that point on, it was weak.

@jayskoon93: Are you saying that Underground was weak, or everything after Underground was weak? Underground and Most Wanted are typically regarded as some of the best games in the series. Underground innovated and Most Wanted made it fresh again (plus the amazing soundtracks). I've been playing NFS since the very first game on PC and they haven't been all that great since Most Wanted, although The Run was fairly decent. Hot Pursuit was great to play with a friend, but up until Underground they were all very similar and Underground did a good job of reinvigorating the series.

@Kathos: Carbon was good too (but not great).

Avatar image for deactivated-5c1c32e0b8cc8

@Kathos: Sorry. Poor wording. I meant AFTER the Underground series. Most Wanted was not so good to me and after that it only got worse and hasn't recovered since. It's mainly the physics I can't get past. I understand it's an arcade racer, not a sim, but the cars don't even function like a car.

@NiteX: Not that young my 1st NFS was Porche Unleashed for the Ps1, I'm 29, but only got a PS1 in 99 =(, still really liked that game and Gran Turismo.

@404FredNotFound: I actually agree with this. It doesn't look like there's anything new here. I'm interested in the game and may pick it up, but I don't see anything to get excited about. But, to be fair, what else could they do with the franchise?

Avatar image for 404FredNotFound

@jcharp: The best games are those that give you something you weren't expecting or didn't even know you needed. =) They just need to figure that out, and this game doesn't even look like they are trying.

This series died with Black Box. Criterion & Ghost Games ruined it.

@ECH71: Criterion's 2010's Hot Pursuit was amazing.

However, I don't know how Criterion dropped the ball so badly with 2012's NFS Most Wanted.

Another crappy need for speed I bet.

Why oh why can't we have 2005 nfs most wanted again? That formula was excellent.

Aw I was hoping for an experience like NFS: Underground. Oh well maybe someday.

@csward: Miss your sound systems and under glows, huh? (kidding)

I actually wouldn't mind that either. Pretty good series that was.

I hope this is good, but I just want an old school racer where you just start with a crap car and compete in events to get money to upgrade your car. The move on to tougher events for more money ect..(NFS underground). I really don't want a crazy story, but hey maybe some do.

Well at least it looks like they got rid of that awful FMV. I definitely won't be pre-ordering though.

Avatar image for jjopoku

@jcharp: whats FMV?

Avatar image for jcharp
jcharp

@jjopoku: It stands for "Full Motion Video". Instead of using digital models, they used FMV with actual actors for some of the sequences between races.

I think we use the word "cringe" or "cringey" too often these days. But I think it's pretty appropriate in this case. Here's an example:

At least it isn't always online, that's a big plus. I didn't buy/rent/play the last one because of that. Can't pause a fking game? Lame. Will wait and see how the actual gameplay is though.

Last game sucked big time. I ignored all the reviews and bought it but not this time. I'm gonna trust the critics on this one.

Not saying it will be a bad game, but expect a shitty story since it sounds incredibly similar to The Crew. Not exactly, but very much.

Avatar image for h2k47

I would say it is closer to The Run and not the Crew...either way it is good there is daylight for a start. I really hope they overhauled the whole game and bring much more wider streets in this one. The last NFS made me curse a dozen at every tight alley.

Avatar image for casshan01

So basically Fast 8 the game? i knew that whole street cred crap was gonna be apart of it. Here comes the old, drift missions and stuff like that. I am glad they kinda going back to the underground series with customization, and the story seems kinda cool. Ill wait for the review.

I love the trailer. Finally something more movie like that can make the game something else than "just another typical NFS" :)

This is why i loved NFS: The Run. I know it wasnt the best one but it was the first that made me feel "wow..something different after 5-6 same games"
