Monster Hunter is written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who has worked on other game-adaptation movies like 1995's Mortal Kombat and 2002's Resident Evil. Over the summer, star Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) revealed that she and husband Anderson are both "huge" fans of the Capcom series, and that while her character Artemis isn't canon, she is meant to be a "grounded, relatable real-world character who is fresh to the world of Monster Hunter to help create a way into the game's world and lore for newcomers." Anderson has also mentioned that Jovovich's character uses the same weapons and armor that his wife uses in the game.
In addition to Jovovich and Jaa, the film also stars Ron Perlman (Hellboy), rapper T.I. (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Meagan Good (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues).
Details on the movie's plot are still relatively scarce, aside from broad strokes that Artemis, a member of an elite military force, falls through a portal into a world populated by giant monsters. Teaming with Jaa's character shown above, a hunter, they fight for survival and find a way back home.
