Electronic Arts announced today that its EA Los Angeles studio is developing The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth for the PC. The title is based on the popular Lord of the Rings movie license and is targeted for a summer 2004 release.

The new release will tap the Command & Conquer: Generals game engine to allow players to complete real time strategy campaigns for both the "good" and "evil" sides of The Lord of the Rings conflict. This is the first time an EA-licensed LOTR title will offer real time strategy gameplay.

The Battle for Middle-Earth is the third offering in The Lord of the Rings franchise from EA Games and follows the upcoming release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King due in November.
