Speaking to Australian website Finder, Michael Brinker, who is senior designer on Rise of the Tomb Raider, was asked what the odds were on a new Legacy of Kain title being released this generation.

"It's a 50/50 chance," he replied. "We have in-house developers who really want to make that game. It's interesting because people look back at our history and our franchises and see that we have some really iconic IPs."

He continued: "So gamers wonder 'Where are they and what are they doing?' Well, we're always tossing around and talking about ideas. It really is 50/50."

The Legacy of Kain property is owned by Square Enix, parent company of Crystal Dynamics. Although a traditional entry in the series has not been released since Legacy of Kain: Defiance in 2003, the open-beta for Nosgoth--a multiplayer game set in the same universe--launched in early 2015.

In February, a thirty-minute leaked video offered a look at Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, a AAA action game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that is believed to have been canceled in 2012.

Dead Sun was reportedly developed by the independent UK developer Climax Studios, which worked on it for about three years before it was cancelled.

"The game was not projected to meet Square Enix sales projections, and was scrapped, to the enormous disappointment of staff who had dedicated a lot of work to the project," said the NeoGAF user that posted the video.

"One source recalled that staff came in at weekends to continue working on the game, while higher-ups already knew it was canceled."

Characters from the Legacy of Kain series, namely Raziel and Kain, appeared in Tomb Raider: Guardian of Light as downloadable extras.
