New Justice League Image Teases a Different Look for Superman [SPOILERS]
One character who didn't appear in the recent teaser for DC's Justice League was Superman. Henry Cavill is coming back as the Man of Steel in the superhero team-up, and the actor has posted a new image on Instagram that suggests a different look for the character when he return to the DC universe. Spoilers ahead!
Comic book fans may recognize this as part of the design from the 'dark' costume that Superman wore in The Death and Return of Superman comic books from the early '90s. In those issues, Superman was killed by Doomsday, much as he was in this year's movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and returned with a dramatic new look.
Cavill's involvement in Justice League has been known for some time, and while it has not been confirmed that he will be wearing the dark costume, this image certainly suggests it:
Justice League is currently in production. In recent interviews, both director Zack Snyder and Batman actor Ben Affleck have emphasized that the movie would be adopting a considerably lighter tone than the dark and moody Dawn of Justice.
"There's definitely room for more humor," Affleck told Slashfilm. "DC movies I think, by their nature are a little more gothic, or mythic rather, than some comic book movies are. But [Dawn of Justice] was very dark and heavy because it was really rooted in Dark Knight Returns which is a heavy, dark book. And this is not that.
"[It] brings together all of these characters who have had their origins. It's about multilateralism, and it's about hope and about working together and the kind of conflicts of trying to work together with others."
Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017, and also stars Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, JK Simmons, Willem Dafoe, and Amber Heard.
