Ahead of Comic-Con, HBO has released the first official trailer for the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. The series is scheduled to premiere on August 21 on HBO.

This is our first meaty look at the series, which will try to carry the torch after the divisive Season 8 series finale of Game of Thrones back in 2019--and will help set the tone and expectations for four other Game of Thrones spin-offs also in the works. A recent profile of House of the Dragon featured both cast and crew speaking in a sincerely excited way to also convey that the prequel series--based on George RR Martin's 2018 novel, Fire & Blood adapting the early history of the Targaryens and their infamous civil war--is a major reset and also, somehow, will be even more brutal than Game of Thrones. Based on the new trailer you can see below, they were telling the truth.

HBO has been betting big on House of the Dragon. The show reportedly carries a budget of more than $15 million per episode. The show was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal. Condal is also the co-showrunner with director Miguel Sapochnik, who is a Game of Thrones veteran known for the Battle of the Bastards episode, among others.

Beyond House of the Dragon, there are four other GoT spin-offs coming, including the Jon Snow series, which is tentatively titled "Snow." The others include Ten Thousand Ships, Sea Snake, and The Hedge Knight/Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There is no guarantee that any of the shows will actually be made, however, but scripts are being written.
