New Hitman Game Focused on Sniping Announced for Mobile

Square Enix Montreal has announced its next Hitman game, and it's another mobile entry in the series.

Following the success of Hitman GO, released in April for iOS devices, Hitman: Sniper features gameplay focused on, obviously, sniping. It will be a competitive game with persistent leaderboards that score you based on your ability to complete contracts effectively and creatively. In the announcement, Square Enix states that it is similar to Sniper Challenge, the companion game to 2012's Hitman: Absolution.

"We’ve designed Hitman: Sniper to be a massively competitive sniping game that will focus on the subtlety of execution," Square Enix describes. "You’ll need to have your wits about you to complete scenario-driven contracts that contain a number of targets and assignments."

Square has elected to make Sniper free-to-play, with microtransactions for "early access to contracts, or upgrades [to] your sniper rifle." The developer promises that everything will be attainable without paying money. This is an interesting move considering the success of Hitman GO, which just launched on Android today for $4.99.

Another Hitman game is currently in development for consoles and PC as well. IO Interactive, developer of Absolution, recently released concept art for its next entry in the series, although it will not be at E3.

Hitman: Sniper is scheduled to launch sometime this year on unspecified mobile platforms. Square Enix Montreal will be giving more information at E3, so watch GameSpot next week for news.
