New GTA: London unlikely, says Houser

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says company would "love" to set a new game in Europe, but probably won't be a Grand Theft Auto game.

A new Grand Theft Auto game set in London is unlikely, according to Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser. Speaking with the Guardian, Houser said the developer could return to the setting of Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, but for a new franchise, not Grand Theft Auto.

No Caption Provided

"I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then," Houser said. "These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don't know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them--I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily."

Houser explained that Rockstar Games has "many" ideas for new games, but it does not have the development bandwidth to pursue everything it wants to. His own perception is that "GTA is America," he said.

Since the Grand Theft Auto series transitioned from a top-down perspective to a third-person open-world series, games in the franchise have been set in fictional cities based on major United States hubs like Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.

Grand Theft Auto V launched on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generating a record-setting $800 million on launch day alone. Versions of the game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are likely to be released in 2014, according to one analyst.

Trust me I lived in England not much to be proud about... unless you are proud of alcohol abuse and poor hygiene .

Hmm, this one i don´t get or i sorta do get it because their biggest market is North America and it seems americans get european humour as much as europeans get american gun politics. But from a game perspective what is left for GTA? a return to Vice City? (Which by the way would be AWEEEEEEEEEEESOME) if they kept sorta the same time period and same whacky style, because GTA VC was a hoot and a handful.

Rockstar needs to make an open world futuristic game, and make it as detailed as GTA and Red Dead Redemption. There's a lot they could do with a sci-fi, and I'd totally play it.

Yeah, setting it in a country where guns are near impossible to come by and the police hardly ever use them would make for a very boring GTA game... I'd like to see a Rio GTA.. Mountains, slums, city, beaches, jungles, gangs, drugs etc... That would make for a brilliant location

@BelaidKL Since when were guns near impossible to come by in the UK? Being Illegal doesn't mean they're not widedley available

@-Snooze- In contrast to America, they are near impossible... I guarantee if you pick 100 random people and ask them where they'd get a gun less than 80% would know here in the UK.. Anyway, all I'm saying is a GTA in the UK wouldn't be too fun

An odd perspective given the game is made in the UK. I can't see a single reason why a GTA game couldn't be based anywhere in the world, you get crime syndicates, sleaziness and corruption everywhere.

How about just for the sake of a change of scenery?
GTA London was hilarious-- imagine if they got Jason Statham to do the voice for the main character.

I have a feeling they don't know the British culture that well and think they would probably mess the game up. they do a pretty good job making fun of american culture and are probably comfortable just doing that.

Ok, fine I can understand that. But can you guys just for fucks sake set it somewhere other than Liberty City, San Andreas or Vice City. It doesn't even have to be a full fledged game. Just a short story/ expansion would be nice.

The Idea of a modern GTA set in Britain reminds me of all the embarrassing times on Worlds Wildest police chases when they follow up a really high octane chase through through the outskirts of L.A with a Clip from over here and its some doped up moron in an ancient Vauxhaul Vectra that crashes of his own accord after about two minutes. While I'm glad no-one is badly hurt sometimes its just embarrassing.

We don't need another GTA in London. Ya know why? Because Bully 2 is going to be set there instead. Maybe not London specifically, but somewhere in Britain would be perfect for it.

London would be great, but you would lose all the humour. What makes GTA so funny is Rockstar are well up to pulling away that syrup coated veneer of so called history taught in American primary schools.

The next one has to be Vice City on next gen, and it needs to have half the Carribean islands In it for smuggling, like Assassins Creed Black Flag. It also needs to be back in the 80's.

@6orange6 Lose all the humour? Whenever you died in GTA London, the words "you're brown bread" (dead in cockney rhyming slang) came up. The game was definitely funny. Europe isn't a continent devoid of comedy.

If they did a new GTA game set in London there would be so much controversy with our government; the gang situation there is still pretty bad and the last thing they want would be a game that involves this sort of crime.

I'd much rather want to see Agent (A cold war espionage thriller) make it's debut on PS4, we've seen nothing from that game for two or three years. It's just as elusive as The Last Guardian.
