New GTA: London unlikely, says Houser

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says company would "love" to set a new game in Europe, but probably won't be a Grand Theft Auto game.

A new Grand Theft Auto game set in London is unlikely, according to Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser. Speaking with the Guardian, Houser said the developer could return to the setting of Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, but for a new franchise, not Grand Theft Auto.

No Caption Provided

"I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then," Houser said. "These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don't know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them--I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily."

Houser explained that Rockstar Games has "many" ideas for new games, but it does not have the development bandwidth to pursue everything it wants to. His own perception is that "GTA is America," he said.

Since the Grand Theft Auto series transitioned from a top-down perspective to a third-person open-world series, games in the franchise have been set in fictional cities based on major United States hubs like Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.

Grand Theft Auto V launched on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generating a record-setting $800 million on launch day alone. Versions of the game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are likely to be released in 2014, according to one analyst.

I don't think they will set a GTA in London... Besides there is already "The Getaway" franchise who I've heard are developing a new installment for next-gen consoles (www.youtube.com/watch?v=mimyaLb-PvQ). I'd like to see a GTA set in the future though where you can drive flying vehicles and shoot laser weapons in a "Fifth Element" styled environment. Make it happen, Rockstar!

He's not a talented enough writer is why. He knows it too, but in showbiz, making your company a billion dollars is the same thing as being good.

What utter weaksauce. Doing a 3D GTA London would be more fresh and original than every GTA game since 3. And I always thought the word 'can't' wasn't in Rockstar's vocabulary. Guess I was wrong. What utter tripe.

@mazoslave Actually mate, NOTHING in the article was stated as an absolute. Even Houser himself is just speculating. Perhaps you should practice what you preach, and read the article again. Closely.

I love London. A quick travel Underground would be a nice as well. and perhaps a Harrods type store for multi level one stop shopping(Bar, guns, arcade, food, maybe a bank to rob). Rockstar would probably throw in a blue police box that shows up in random places. Maybe at some point.

I would love to blend GTA and Google Earth. Not really for the violence, but for exploring different places.

If you're gonna do a GTA in Europe then you're better of doing it across a number of European cities, using some sort of airport mechanic to transport. London, Monaco, Naples, Berlin, Moscow, Budapest, Luton. Pick some of those...

It's only a matter of time before this is doable.

@BradBurns @forbiddenmow

yeah. understood. i'm English. I live in London.

marketing is everything. there is a demographic risk of course. however, i'd say any game that is good enough can overcome that. e.g. COD4 wasn't set in US (ok, maybe a lame example but I can't be bothered to think of a better one).

problem is that the gameplay that features in GTA is pretty incongruous with English popular culture. we've been conditioned to feel comfortable with spectacular action crap happening in US cities for years in movies. it just doesn't work in UK. we just don't have the guns for starters. it would be a very hard sell for most gamers. of course, the irony is that this shit doesn't really happen in US cities either.

you can do action thrillers in Europe (as Bond and Bourne testify) but they have to have a different angle.

as for Europeans having self serving opinions on their culture. well yes, maybe. But I think it's fairly safe to say all culture's are prone to self aggrandising. the US being no exception.

there are a million ways to lampoon Europeans. we've been doing it to each other for centuries. and as for a place that can give you a witty, unflinching and scathing satire on the English then, trust me, you'd want the Scots up at Rock Star North in charge of that in front of the Californians any day.

Now they DO have a score to settle.

I personally am predicting that the next GTA game is going to take place in China (with Vice City taking a close second) anyone who has played thru the campaign in GTA V can probably guess why this is.

GTA: London could actually work.

The Scots that develop the GTA games masterfully lampoon many different aspects of modern American culture but Europe, and particularly England, is rife with satire opportunities.

The fact that they committed genocide on virtually all American natives under their rule and yet primarily talk about other European nations doing it is hilarious, also their nationalists are a riot what with their pretensions of believing that they are any sort of major world power and what not.

Also, they(nationalists) are very proud about being one of the first nations to abolish African slavery but they fail to say that they kept slavery in India going until 1920.

Also, England has some crazy classism when compared to the U.S. If you have more money you're just a better person.

It's a perfect location for lampooning what's wrong with the culture of Europe in general, what with all the hypocrisy and self-serving view of their history.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't coming from a place of hate, I love European culture(Britain, Spain, France, Italy, all of 'em), which is why I'm well aware of what's wrong with them. Plus, they could use a good lampooning.

But please develop GTA: London at Rockstar San Diego, it's only fair, right?

No, not at all.

I prefer to call it "cheekiness". Believe it or not their culture also has its faults. It's actually pretty obvious if you go past the surface.

But I do think that the real reason they won't make GTA: London is that the demographic would be too specific, and smaller as a result. Americans(the largest market in the world) will relate to it less and probably buy less copies. It's more financially risky.

Keep it in the U.S. Five is the best, still no flamethrower though, storyline is different. They need to leave out theaters, watching tv, stuff like yoga, aliens and zombies. It's a waste of console power. Countryside and city should be in these games. They need to get rid of those lines that wave around, don't think pc would fix it all either

You could play as a White Mexican that controls all of the countries wealth and take kickbacks from American corporations for making Mexico's economy more "appealing" to US corporate interests, while oppressing the countries racially indigenous majority.

That would be bit too real, though.

It would just be kinda depressing to play..

@quidditch3 I get that you're upset but really, really wanting to believe things doesn't make them true. Football players are bigger and hit way harder. Every rugby player that's ever tried being a back or, god forbid, a lineman always gets mauled for the simple reason that their sport encourages measured force and endurance while football encourages very short bursts of full tilt violence and exertion followed by a brief period of rest, rinse, repeat.

If it makes you feel any better football players wouldn't be any good at rugby either because, while they'd dominate for something like the first seven minutes, they'd be gassed to Hell and useless for the rest of the game.

@DrYnot @Rhaego85 @NoblesseOblige_ Thats because there isn't anything physical in American Football there is a total of two thing to do in football. Two people "run" with the ball and the rest of them play with each other.
