Now Playing: Ghost Recon Breakpoint Launches This Year - GS News Update

Just as a recent leak suggested, a new Ghost Recon game is on the way this year. Ubisoft officially unveiled a brand-new entry in the series during a world premiere livestream on May 9. Titled Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the new open-world shooter is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC (as an Epic Store exclusive) this fall, and it introduces some notable changes to the tactical shooter franchise.

Whereas 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands took place in Bolivia, Breakpoint is set in Auroa, a fictional Pacific archipelago reminiscent of New Zealand. Auroa is home to Skell Technology, a corporation specializing in AI drone tech. When communication with the company ceases, you're sent to the archipelago to investigate. When you arrive, however, you'll find yourself not in the role of the hunter, but the hunted. The game seems to have clear political themes, although Ubisoft insists it isn't making any political statements.

Throughout the game, you'll encounter a paramilitary group known as the Wolves, who Ubisoft says are just as skilled on the battlefield as the Ghosts. Because of this, the game places a greater emphasis on stealth. You'll be able to employ drones and hide the bodies of any enemies you kill. Similarly, you can avoid detection by crouching in foliage or covering yourself with mud. The game also features some survival elements; any injuries you sustain will need to be treated, and you'll need to maintain your weapons.

The Wolves are led by Cole D. Walker, who is portrayed by actor Jon Bernthal. Wildlands players will recognize Walker as the former Ghost who was introduced in that game's recent Operation Oracle update, which Ubisoft says serves as a prelude to Breakpoint.

In contrast with Wildlands, the perks, abilities, and weapons you'll be able to use in Breakpoint are determined by distinct character classes. Ubisoft says there will be four of these available at launch, with additional classes following in the months after release. The company also confirmed there will be solo, co-op, and PvP modes at launch, and your progress will carry over between them.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 4. Players who pre-order the title will get access to an upcoming beta test ahead of the game's release. We had a chance to go hands-on with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint at a demo event and thought it was both promising and concerning.

Looks like a typical TC game. Civilian looking Burly guys dressed in Military gear and backpacks and beards with a T-shirt and Bulletproof vest. Running around with a gun. Seen it before TC, Hard Pass. Where TF is SPLINTER CELL??

This looks pretty good. I liked Wildlands, but I always do lean more towards open-world games than other genres. Jon Bernthal is a good actor, seen him in loads on films and TV series.

This will be something to look forward to playing much later in the year :)

Wildlands was kind of fun with friends and co-op. Customization was good, world was huge, lots of bosses and weapons and such. Not a bad way to kill some free time with friends. Don't mind doing it again with a new story in Breakpoint.

AI was my biggest complaint about Wildlands, and thankfully that has been done away with. They added a lot of what players requested from Wildlands, so it should be an improvement.

People have their opinions, and I know most will probably complain about this game reveal. I personally don't mind it.

Lame decisions. Dlc is 4player coop only? Future tech overuse. No friendly AI? Make TomClancy Great Again!!! https://youtu.be/iuS121FVdQE

Looks a lot like Wildlands, which isn't necessarily bad. I'll probably still get it.
