New FX Docuseries Follows Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds Running A Welsh Football Team

Welcome to Wrexham will show us what true champions are made of.

Earlier this year, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became the proud owners of a UK football team--now, the Deadpool star and It's Always Sunny creator have gotten the greenlight from FX to make a docuseries about the pair's taking ownership of "the town's historic yet struggling football club."

The new show, titled Welcome to Wrexham, will "track the dreams and people of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales" as "two Hollywood stars… purchase the team in the hopes of turning the slub into an underdog story the whole world could root for." As fans of the actors already know--and what will likely make the show a bit of an unintentional comedy--is that "Rob and Ryan have no experience in football or working with each other." Despite whatever degree the show may transparently prove their ownership to be a comedy of errors as they find their sea legs, a release makes it clear the pair is sincere about doing right by Wrexham.

"Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club," said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Entertainment.

As neither Reynolds and McElhenney have quit their day jobs, they each have a lot of other projects on the horizon. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed for four more seasons, which will bring it all the way up to 18 seasons in total. Apple TV+'s Mythic Quest, meanwhile, recently returned for Season 2. Reynolds has Free Guy coming to theaters in a shortened theatrical run in August.
