New Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trailer Revealed During PS4's State Of Play Presentation

Here's another look at the long-awaited remake.

Sony capped off its latest State of Play presentation with a new trailer for Square Enix's highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII remake. This marks the first new footage we've seen of the game in quite some time, and while brief, it offers a tantalizing look at how the remake is shaping up.

The trailer, which you can watch above, shows off what appears to be footage from the early portion of the game. We see Cloud and other members of AVALANCHE infiltrating a plant as part of the famous bombing mission sequence. The video also gives us a quick glimpse at the game's revamped battle system. Despite its fairly brief duration, the trailer ends with a promise that more details will come in June, presumably as part of Square Enix's E3 press conference, which takes place on Monday, June 10, at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy VII: Remake - Official State Of Play Trailer

Following the presentation, the official Final Fantasy Twitter account shared a message from Final Fantasy VII remake director Tetsuya Nomura, reaffirming that fans won't have to wait much longer for more info about the game. "Most of the plans are already in place in the run up to launch, so please bear with us a little longer until we can release more information next month," the message read.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was first announced during Sony's E3 2015 presentation, although since then, details about the game have been scarce. Nomura was directing the game concurrently with another long-awaited title, Kingdom Hearts III, although the developer claimed that directing them both made his life easier. Kingdom Hearts III finally launched earlier this year, although the Final Fantasy VII remake is still without a release date.

Sony's latest State of Play presentation was only roughly 10 minutes long, although it game us a look at quite a few games during that time. Along with new footage of the MediEvil remake, the presentation revealed new details about Monster Hunter World's Iceborne expansion and showed off a new Predator game from Friday the 13th developer IllFonic.

Overrated FF of all times (or maybe FF4?) but it understandable.

When I saw gameplay it like I saw SE point thier middle finger at me.

I've been waiting 10 years to play a 20 year old game.

The anticipation has come and gone multiple times.

Well half the games made, remember Midgars a huge city, especially under ground.

And that's not even accounting for the entire world, the under sea, all the gundum giants, and what to do with all the empty spots along the way from each town and city

Blue dragon would be best fitting for what would be the fast and easier way if it was being made for the switch only but it's square enix problem.

Of the discuss ghost recon breakpoint that wounded features underwelming

I am starting to believe that Square is favoring new generation gamers more than us old folks who played this gem back in the 90s.

Ok so you want to remove turn based battle system and replace it with action elements I don't mind but don't screw it up, do it right or don't bother.

@SsangyongKYRON: I'm more concerned about them cutting down the gameplay, simplifying it too much, and scrapping most of what made the battle interesting.

In FFXV, you basically had 3 types of magic and it seemed like less than a dozen types of items. Sure, you could change the aspects of the magic with status effects, but there was no visual indication showing the changes in the spells. Even when I discovered the 4th strength tier of the spells the visuals looked exactly the same as the 3rd tier making it less interesting to make them. The damage wasn't needed because you could already take out groups of enemies with no effort.

In FF7, there is dozens of spells, enemy skills and summons to use and all manner of ways to combine them to change up battle. A lot of it I wonder how SE will work into an ARPG.

The worse for me is if they take away the options and put them behind randomizers or chance like the summons in FFXV or the slots in Crisis core.

@SsangyongKYRON: They'll screw it up. They always do. Square isn't the same anymore.

In my opinion, Cloud is the most badass Final Fantasy character and protagonist.

@SsangyongKYRON: Oh yeah but Cloud was already a top badass soldier right at the start of the game. Not from a gameplay point of view though but story. And in FF8 given that you're part of an academy and all it felt like you were a newbie for the most part. Especially when your teacher kept reminding you of it. At least that's how I remember it. Haven't played this game since 2001, lol.

I'm in this just to see the story retold in an updated more cinematic way. The battle system does look simplistic but this is also only the reactor where there isn't much materia around anyway so who knows maybe it gets better. Either way, just excited to see this game revisited!

What have they done to combat system, FFXIII and it spin off and FFXV I despisted cause the battle system is not that of a FF game plain and simple.

For me the Turnbased combat system of FF game is what made me love series. and now that Square seem intend on abbandoned it of real time combat. my intrested in FF has died alot. and if Remake of FF7 follows that tried FF series will be dead to me.

It was the the story or the graphics its was that TURNbased gameplay and being able to control ever member of my party and have that do what I want and when. not have AI control it FFXII started that but you could actual turn off gambits which was the ai control.

Atlest they didnt Pull same shit with the recent dragon quest game.

@tsunami2311: I agree. For me to accept their new action combat system they would have to make it more strategic and interesting than it currently is. When I played FF XV for the most part I was just holiding the circle button down in combat. The most boring FF game I ever played, honestly. If that's not how it should be played then they should have had a better tutorial.

I hope we don't have to wait long to play this.

I've seen that they have said it will still be episodic as well. Hopefully we will find out more soon. Looking really good

It's looking good, but I have my reservations about the combat. I really hope the materia and skill systems are still in place. I don't want a game like FFXV that plays for you and all the options to change up combat are locked behind randomizers (ie FFXV summons, Crisis Core slot wheels). The original FF7 allowed customization of the materia how I wanted and allowed me to summon whenever I wanted. Hopefully they keep that the same. I see there is an MP bar, so at least I feel like they have gotten away from the magic-in-a-bottle like FFXV or FF8's draw system.

As much as I loved the original, I do hope they make some changed to the gameplay. As long as they don't mess with the story, I don't mind if they get rid of the turn-based system, I hope they allow for some of the spells to be shortened and other quality of life issues. I do hope they keep Emerald and the other weapons and make them just as difficult if not more difficult (now that most people know how to defeat them).

@ahpuck: same man, there was a great story and funny characters in FF7, but combat just didn't do it for me. I still wanted to finish it, but I had to sell it to be able to pay a critical repair for my bike.

How about that pre-order date....lol.

Given that we're only seeing Stage-1 material, it could be awhile.

I'm curious to see how they plan to do the world map or anything else. All the natural/mystical locations could look just stunning.

Doesn't matter what people say about the new modern combat or w/e. I'm mostly interested in seeing Aerith again and see if they have made some alterations to the story or if it will be exactly the same outcome as in the original, either way just that part of the story is worth playing it, for me.

Did anybody here play KH3 and FFXV? Could you tell me whether KH3's combat felt more like KH2 or more like FFXV?

I ask because I loved KH2 but felt FFXV combat to be pretty floaty and unsatisfying, and since on this one they'll be employing action combat again, I'm hoping it could be more like KH2 and less like FFXV...

@Reuwsaat: From the controls/menu (bottom left) in the video, it looks like it might play like Crisis Core/KH3 hybrid.
