New Dragon Age 4 Details And Concept Art Revealed At Gamescom 2020

BioWare showed off new Dragon Age 4 art and details during Gamescom Opening Night Live.

Esteemed developer BioWare continues to work on Dragon Age 4, and while the game is still in early development, the studio provided some sense of what its next title in the franchise might be like during the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream. Most interesting is BioWare's focus on characters "who don't have power," taking the series in a different storytelling direction than the last game, during which you had enormous political influence.

The trailer we saw was mostly filled with concept art and a few brief glimpses at in-game environments, but it did give a few intriguing tidbits. We saw that at least one key character will be returning--Dragon Age: Inquisition's Solas, who fans will remember as having played a significant role in that game's story. It sounds like Dragon Age 4 will also deal pretty heavily with the politics of the game's world, where the people in power aren't willing to address issues plaguing their people. Mark Darrah, who has worked as an executive producer at BioWare for several years, will once again be involved in the new Dragon Age game's development. Creative director Mike Laidlaw is no longer with BioWare, however, having left after Inquisition's release to briefly work for Ubisoft.

BioWare also mentioned that player choice will be a big feature in the game, of course, and that Dragon Age 4 will see new locations that players have never visited before. But details beyond those were pretty thin, except that BioWare is working on the game and we'll see it on next-gen consoles whenever it's released. It's also worth noting that Dragon Age 4 is not yet an official name for the game--BioWare only refers to it as the "next Dragon Age." In the past, we've heard there could be some sort of ongoing element to its storytelling, but it doesn't sound like this will replace the traditional structure. This news also came out more than two years ago, so things could have changed.

Speaking of next-gen consoles, you can now register to pre-order a PS5, though the first round will be invite-only. And for more news out of Gamescom, be sure to check our roundup of all the announcements from Opening Night Live.

I have no faith in Bioware after Andromeda and Anthem. Plus I have even less faith in EA. DA:I was good, though.

Make sure you manufacture your reasons for being angry now, so when the game is finally released you know why you hate it and see those reasons everywhere you look.

@OrionMD: LOL...the hypocrisy is strong with this one. You do realize that the anticipatory butthurt from people is actually THEM acting acting self-righteously, right?

I will get around to finish DA:I around the time the next DA is released. I like the story was was never a fan of gameplay after DA: 2 it went to many "rpg" games that start out turnbased/DD based have turned to realtime hacky slashy combat which turn off for me as a RPG game very few RPG that do that I like and Skyrim only ony that really pops out to me

@tsunami2311: Totally agree! I went from being completely wowed and enthralled by DA:O to annoyed at the characters and gameplay elements of DA:2 (though the game was OK, it seemed really lazy compared with DA:O... and I gotta ask, what the heck was up with Anders' attitude in 2???) to the point where I never bothered with 3/DA:I. I will have to wait and see what DA:4 has to offer, but the whole universe' story is broken IMO.

@zyxe: I've replayed DA:I probably 3 times. DAO was classic, DA 2 was ok, but meh, not sure why Inquisition clicked with me, but I consider it a great successor to DAO.

The final battle: BioWare vs. EA. Who will win? Check back once this game releases.

My money is on EA, but I hope BioWare pulls it off.

@dancingcactus: I don't think EA was the problem with Andromeda or Anthem. Both those games had really terrible writing, and it'd be major shame if a Dragon Age game couldn't do a lot better. Fingers crossed.

Dragon Age origins is still the best, but Bioware more focus on gameplay you have alot to prove this time around don't expect people to jump on your preorder wagon.

If they go full SJW with this entry, that could be the nail in the coffin for BioWare. With that in mind, I’ll be interested to see what they do. Sometimes people do their best work when they are under that kind of pressure.

@rawkstar007: Anticipatory butthurt duly noted. Make sure you're worked up into a good lather before you even try the game so that your decision to hate it is pre-determined.

Yawn.

@esqueejy: most don’t care about the diversity/SJW fluff they add to the games. It’s when it becomes shoehorned and preachy and feels condescending it is annoying.

@OrionMD: It always FEELS "shoehorned and preachy" to those predisposed to hate it and to attach an "agenda" to it because they simply don't want it there at all. Nobody cares about those peoples' feefees but themselves and their fellow echo chamber dwellers.

@esqueejy: You assume I care about SJW stuff one way or another. Just being realistic. From a marketing standpoint, they don’t have the room to make a statement AND a good game. They have to get back to basics if they are to survive. EA WILL shut them down if they fail.

@rawkstar007: You have zero evidentiary basis for claiming tat the material you describe as "SJW" is in any way at fault for games doing poorly. The overwhelming evidence is that it's other things, like microtransaction scams, poor optimizations and pervasive bugginess, wrongheaded design choices, failure to innovate, etc. You can't point to a single game and any underlying evidence that it containing "SJW" content was responsible for it doing poorly or taking up "room" that caused it to fail. It's freeking absurd for you to even claim it.

@rawkstar007: don’t worry about what he says. His identity is about being the most open-minded person in the room, unless you disagree with him and then you are a disposable human. Just be honored he took time out from burning down infrastructure to reply to your comment.

@rawkstar007: Going "full SJW" has never really been BioWare's issue. The diversity adds are always little things around the periphery of their games that morons on the internet latch onto and pretend are the only content the games have.

BioWare's problem with their last two AAA entries has been polish and writing. Andromeda and Anthem both felt super rushed, despite how long they were in development, and both were really bad at character writing and storytelling (which mattered less for Anthem, as something of a loot shooter, but killed Andromeda by itself).

@mogan: EA has been drifting the way of the dodo for longer than that. They’ve been in trouble for nearly a decade. I don’t personally care about SJW stuff if the game is good. Now is not the time to screw around though. They need to appeal to everyone if they are going to survive. Too much SJW will alienate too many in this climate.

I love dragonage games. Just hope the ps5 can deliver, kinda sucked with massive framerate drops while fighting the big dragons in inquisition.

Great! A hyper-politicized video game with reactions and outcomes predetermined by the programmers to push their agenda of what’s good and bad. Sounds amazingly self-righteous.

I loved origins and enjoyed inquisition, but BioWare has left a lot to be desired since they decided that every game had to follow a PC path. In doing so their games lost focus to be “inclusive” or “inoffensive” which is to say it’s become like the rest of the world. I wish they’d just cut the nonsense and make a good game that tells a good story and doesn’t try to cram their “morals” down the players throat.

I guess that’s just a wish since now everyone has a platform and a voice to use and must scream as loud as they can. Too bad they don’t realize they’re just making noise. You aren’t changing the world with your video game statement BioWare. 99.9999% of the world won’t see it and don’t care.

Finally a reason to UNMUTE this site.

It has been over 6 yrs since the last Dragon;s Age and this game will probably be at least another couple more before its out, so a welcome to any high fantasy strategic RPG. The first DA was so amazing and fresh, and then just too much EA involvement in the sequels.

Wikipedia and Gamesindustry.biz/developer have mentioned many times before that EA killed the 'original' DA 4 joplin because it did not have enough online monetization in it. This one above is called 'morrison' and it is built around EA coat of monetization paint. God forbid if it will be nothing but always online, loot crates, half the story and characters hidden behind paywalls, community chat, auction houses, you know EA online content we all have come to know and love in our single player RPGs.

Sequel

The fourth main entry in the series is being developed as of 2020. Development of this game, code-named "Joplin", began in 2015. It was originally intended to be a smaller, more narrative-focused game set in the Tevinter Imperium region of the game's world.[111] Problems with the development of Bioware's other games Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem led to repeated interruptions as "Joplin" staff was shifted to these games. In October 2018, Bioware and its parent company EA cancelled "Joplin" altogether, reportedly because it did not provide for a "live service" component providing ongoing monetization opportunities. [111] Development of Dragon Age 4 was restarted under the code-name "Morrison", this time with a live-service component and based on Anthem's code.[111]

"Esteemed developer BioWare"

Guess Gamespot finally discovered a time machine and went back 10 years in time.

While there, tell tem that enemies spawning out of nowhere will be received poorly in Dragon Age 2.

I wonder how they plan to explain that the hero from the last game, that has pretty much single handedly saved the world, is now supposed to ignore all the problems that are out there. That would go completely against his character.

Dear BW,

We haven’t forgotten about Anthem. Most of us are not up to forgive that.

It’s better if you kept quiet and actually showed off something concrete closer to a finished product.
