New Doom Video Showcases Customization and Progression Systems

Being a modern first-person shooter, the multiplayer mode in Doom features progression and customization systems, both of which are highlighted in a new video released today.

Playing multiplayer matches earns you experience, which in turn allows you to level up. Playing also rewards you with various items--everything from new taunts and weapon patterns to armor pieces and colors.

After demonstrating how these things are awarded to you following the conclusion of a match, the video proceeds to show off the many ways you can customize weapons. Numerous patterns and paint schemes can be applied to them, although it looks as if you're restricted to combining pre-defined options, rather than being able to create designs completely from scratch. Still, it looks as if you'll be able to effectively distinguish yourself from other players.

In addition to these cosmetic options, there are also something called hack modules that you can earn. These are one-use, temporary buffs that can be used during a match to do things like show you enemies' health or respawn timers on pickups around the map.

An open beta for Doom's multiplayer mode launches tomorrow, April 15, and runs through April 17 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. You can begin preloading now so that you're ready to play as soon as the beta opens up. You can find out more about what's included in the beta here.

The full game launches on May 13.

This is crap! Nobody cares about colors and useless skins. We all know these things exist only to milk micro-transactions. How about the story? No information at all so far.

I hope the campaign is long and awesome because the multiplayer looks so unoriginal that is keeping my hopes down for this game.

@Pecone_Penev: well I think you got a point. It feel like CODified Quake with all these loadouts, one-shot kill superweapons and perks. Then again these kind of customization features can extend playtime. for me this game got its ups and downs but worth a shot. but I still hope they put a classic quake mode with spawning weapons and without demons, loadouts and perks.

@MoreThot: Whoa there -- don't be bringing UT into this mess... They're still THE gold-standard for arena shooters. (Go log in and see.) Even the "worst" edition was still better than most MP games could ever hope to achieve.

@Pyrosa: I agree with you. I love UT and Quake. Use to play them a lot back in the day before all this "progression" stuff was implemented and I honestly don't think that progression even needs to be in a game as long as its got great lasting gameplay. I just brought UT into the picture because the similarities with arena/gun play seen in the MP but that's about where it ends. Aside from players being able to make maps as well.

Everything I keep seeing about the Doom multiplayer looks really awful. I hope the SP campaign is Doom and not this Halo bullshit the multiplayer is.

@cornbredx: So I guess by your logic Halo ripped off Quake/UT... So Wolfenstein/Doom, Quake ripped off Doom/Wolfenstein, UT ripped off Quake, Halo ripped off Quake and UT. See the pattern yet?

Oh and the SP of Doom is going to mirror the classic DOOM games ie. you have multiple weapons, run around picking up ammo/health and straight up blast demons all over the map.

@cornbredx: I played the beta, the MP feels like Doom, it's fast, weapons are fun to use and you don't have to use the hacks to win.....i ran 20 matches and never used em and was on the winning team 60% of the time......and survived well enough each life.....

this is way better than Rage's MP.....

Halo got boring all around same with most MP games lately.....
